One of the worst habits I see my students practice (I teach at a local college) during quizzes and exams is second guessing themselves...they change answers based on their feelings of self-doubt. I tell them to go with their initial answer, do not change it unless they have a compelling and logical reason to do so. Changing something (test answer, trading strategy) based on self-doubt is a bad strategy and is especially so if the change you make ends in a good result. Bad strategies can produce good results from time to time. Good strategies can produce bad results from time to time. Which would you choose?

I mean that's some sick sick jedi mind jazz sh*t lmaooo To everyone NOT listening to the podcast AND reading the traders blog you're doing your bottom line a huge disservice. Thank you, VP, for the mirror you are holding in front of us - the Big Mistakes we surely all do... It is a hard way to get disciplined, because you have to give up bad habits which are so comfortable in our lives. Step by step I am working on it, and because of you telling the truth I really can see a change in my way of trading. There are still some "stepping-back-in -old-and-bad-habits" - this is immediately punished by the market and the bad results. But obeying these rules you share with us I can see the better way. Thank you, VP.

It is very important to have a Trading Plan. This plan not only contains the reasons why you're doing this shit but also how to take entries and exits. So like VP says "Only take trades that satisfy your entry criteria". Full stop. Also VP says "leave trades to play out". Very important. But these items should be in your plan. The times over the last 15 years of trading that I've exited a trade early (to take the money) and moved a stop (to avoid a loss) are numerous. Don't do it. Discipline!!

Seriously guys. Read Discipline = Freedom book. I used to be a person who constantly slept in and I was always late. I just couldn't get out of the bed in the morning. And I felt guilty for doing this. After reading Jocko's book, and even I never thought one could change in this way in such a short amount of time, I managed to get up at whatever time and get out of bed in an instant. To a point where I felt bad if I didn't execute. This book is a total game changer. Highly recommend. P.S. I know it doesn't have to do anything with trading. But I had to share this with everybody considering reading this book. And hopefully I convinced you by just randomly sharing this story with everybody! Thanks VP for sharing this man's work with the world, found the book incredibly valuable, and really enjoying his podcast as well, tons of value and great war stories! Happy trading everyone!

While rewatching this last night, I had a good example of where my discipline is.... I trade the Daily but I break the rule of intraday looking (i do other things during the day like backtesting and such), HOWEVER, I watched a trade go to within 1.9 pips of my 1st TP and did NOTHING.... I just watched it recede from the line and went about my day. That trade is now trending back towards my TP. Discipline traders. DISCIPLINE! Even if I (my system) end up losing this trade....my psychology (me) actually WON. Thanks VP!!! GO get it!

Nice video but here what goes in my mind. 1. Remember about your video scale out. When price hit TP=ATR, we can lock the profit, move the SL to BE. If we only check once a day, chances are we might miss the time to lock profit and price just go the other way. 2. How about first the price is 1 pip short to my TP for breakeven? its tempting to scale out, move SL to BE because chances the price will go the other way and we were so close there to lock profit.

Yo VP, Ive been homeless for almost a year now. I figured since i live in a part of the world where there are no bears, bugs, or ice i could slum it out for a few months and pay off my debt. But after 8 months i found myself with MORE debt, still broke but now without a place, and that my only option was to quit my phd program to join the tech industry, a thought that only sounds slightly better than dying broke and alone. But i see now that wouldnt of helped either, bad money management and lack of discipline are my problems to overcome, and watching your videos the past two months i started february with more money than i had starting january, probably for the first time in my life. And that didnt happen through trading, but through evaluating my bad habits, and i have a long way to go. In fact, i havent even started to put together my strategy because ive been building my own forex platform. I use python to grab the price from oanda and javascript to graph my chart. Except i grab a random 200 candles from the past thirty years. I then update the current candle with the 4 hour candle every 5 seconds, meaning a day candle closes every thirty seconds. I hope this willl make up for the lost time i spent coding this thing. Im very excited that today i got the sma in my chart. Sounds like a small feat but ive been struggling for two weeks to find a clean way to get my indicators from python to javascript in a clean way. Seeing the sma on my chart has got me elated, its as simple as writing the indicators now. And combining them and automating the testing so i can characterize them over all pairs over all available times over a wide range of settings and risk strategies with only a click of a button. When i get to real time streaming i can add fake data to see how a signal holds up to noise and im thinking non linear profit/stop losses may provide some unique strategies. Its all at my fingertips now man, and that could be sugnificant if i can only remember that discipline equals freedom! By the time i finish my phd i hope to be trading for a prop firm just like you. Thanks for paying it forward!

For swings I have very specific criteria I follow, but for short scalps (10-15 pips) I would say intuition is useful. My approach also rules-based but I'll get out early every time if it starts to look like I screwed up the entry or if I won't get to my exit. I'm okay with not getting a proper exit in this case, as long as I'm in the green at the end of it. Or if it does go against me, I get out with a minimal loss.
