The whole time I was driving the Venxa, I kept thinking to myself: why would anyone buy the Lexus NX over this? And also: This isn't quite the Venza I thought we were getting. While I can't talk about the way it drives just yet, we can talk about the rest of the new Venza (aka Toyota Harrier) in this video and why I think the NX should be off your shopping list until it gets a complete redesign in a year or two...

I have no idea why other car review channels exist when you have Alex. Hands down the best out there. Such a detailed explanation and on top Alex talks direct to consumers, not talking a scientific language like others. If you like a car, what it on Alex on Autos and go buy it. People working at dealerships have half the knowledge of this channel.

Savagegeese might be worth your time to check out. Kind of a different style so the 2 may not be in competition, but definitely top notch. I subscribe to both, but savagegeese is my favorite and I will watch ANYTHING that he reviews. For Alex, I will only watch him review vehicles that I would consider buying.

Steve Printy love, love Savagegeese. Mark is the best. He and Alex, two totally different styles. My neighbor was looking for a car for his wife and I turned him onto Alex. My dad bought a Volvo S60 because of the savage goose, and I bought an Acura TLX Because of Alex.

Alex is very thorough about features most buyers care about, and about placement relative to competitors, but he could be more concise. Savagegeese is just wonderful. Mark produces beautiful videos and gives comprehensive technical explanations, along with some very dry humor. His channel is much more aimed towards performance car enthusiasts, though he does discuss more ordinary cars, too, if not as thoroughly as Alex.

Very interesting review of an interesting vehicle, Alex. The mainstream midsize crossover category is huge. Two categories really. A group of larger 3 row vehicles that range in length from 195" (Highlander) to 203" (Traverse) and a group of smaller, typically 2 row CUVs that range from about 188" (Santa Fe, Ford Edge, etc) to 192" or so in length*. (Murano, Grand Cherokee, Blazer, etc.) Nearly all manufacturers offer vehicles in each category, the exceptions being Mazda** and until introduction of the new Venza, Toyota. But how various manufacturers have approached designing separate entries in the two sub-categories has differed. Some brands have based their two offerings on different platforms (e.g. Edge vs Explorer, Santa Fe vs Palisade, Blazer vs Traverse.) Others have simply reduced the size of their 3 row CUV's to provide a two row version. (e.g. Honda Pilot, VW Cross Sport). Toyota has taken a somewhat different approach with the Venza being a stretched version of the RAV4 but with a host of other differences, in terms of both style and substance. Apparently, the popularity of the RAV4 and Highlander hybrids has convinced Toyota to limit the Venza (nee Harrier) to a hybrid power train. No sunroof but a glass roof that darkens at the flip of a switch a la Mercedes Benz. Pretty trick. Obviously neither the Venza nor the Highlander is more than a very soft off-roader. But Toyota has the aging but still strong selling (and true "SUV") 4Runner for those who consider off-roading a high priority. In terms of size (exterior and interior) the Venza is at the low end of the smaller midsize CUV category just as the Highlander is at the low end of larger 3 row group but Highlander owners accept an extremely cramped third row and Toyota apparently believes a significant portion of their potential customers would prefer just to eliminate a tiny and cramped third row, altogether. I suspect they're right. The Highlander may well lose some sales to the Venza but from Toyota's point of view that's better than would-be customers defecting to other brands. I suspect the new Venza will be a strong seller for suburbanites who enjoy a close relationship with Costco and as a small family road tripper with excellent fuel economy. * VW's Cross Sport is an exception being 195.5" long; it's a very large 2 row CUV, half an inch longer than a Highlander. And KIA stands more or less alone in offering a smaller CUV, the Sorento (189") with three rows. **Mazda has a smaller midsize CUV,, the CX-8, but doesn't offer it in the US. Similar to the Venza, the CX-8 is a stretched version of the compact CX-5.

One year ago I bought a 2019 RAV4 Limited Hybrid, fully loaded. It’s a sweet ride, but now I’m seriously considering trading it in for the 2021 Venza which is much better looking inside and out, has power passenger seat, HUD and will most likely be quieter than the RAV4. Hopefully it won’t have the RAV4’s gas tank problem that Toyota acknowledges, but has no solution. Looking forward to seeing the Venza in person.

For me, this Venza checks all the boxes. I am happy to see that it returned. I recall seeing it several years ago and then, it disappeared. I would like to read more about what is powered by the battery beside the brakes. What is the difference between the 2021 and 2022 models? With the current chip issue, I am hopeful that m American-made Trailblazer will be worth more than BB value.

I agree that the NX will be a hard sell once the Venza goes on sale. I had a loaner NX and thought it was just okay. The UX hybrid looks much better but the trunk is just too small for me. I'll probably wait until next year to see what the new NX looks like but the Venza is really tempting. Unless the new NX is a huge improvement it will be hard to justify the roughly $10K extra for an NX. Too bad the large screen is split all the time but super glad that it's touch. I don't miss the sun/moon roof at all.

Was looking forward to the Venza as I was looking for a two-row Highlander. We have a 2019 Santa Fe, and when doing our comparison shopping, found the RAV4 to be a tad narrow for our taste, whereas the SF is roughly 3.5” wider, which is noticeable for us. It would seem Toyota doesn’t have what we want this time around; since we enjoy our SF, I guess we will wait to replace our aging sedan until we see the new ‘21 Santa Fe.

Super glad Toyota decided to bring back their premium Harrier to the US market. It's been such an excellent option in other foreign markets for years, and our very own Lexus RX was a gussied up Harrier back in the day. Great vehicles! Love this new one with all the smooth lines and unique shapes - it really stands out as a premium alternative to the RAV4 without the price of the Lexus. Very interested to see how the market responds to this new Venza. Personally, I'd have loved it if they'd kept the Harrier name, it just sounds better, but otherwise no complaints from me! Looks like a good overall package.

Better ride and lower noise, good if not great room inside, quick but not quickest . . . sounds like the old Venza, but that hybrid is what has my attention! I've never been comfortable in the RAV4, but this seems right up my alley. I will admit that I would like a moonroof . . . unlike most folks, I use it dozens of times a year . . . the new roof is interesting, but I like an opening moonroof!! I'm watching to see what Toyota does with the Venza over the next year or two . . .

Lovely design but here are some concerns. 1. It's larger than a RAV4 but has less cargo room than on the inside. Three inches shorter than the old Venza. It's billed as being bigger than the RAV4 but smaller than the Highlander. They should increase the wheelbase to give more backseat/ cargo room. 2. Less headroom than a RAV4, and even less with the sunroof. Make it taller. 3. Would prefer a moonroof (opens to the elements) than a sunroof with the glass that frosts on/ off. The frosting would be cooler if it darkened, rather than just frosted. Combine a moonroof with darkened frosting and you have a winner. 4. Lower the infotainment system and integrate it into the dashboard instead of the stuck-on tablet style. 5. No volume knob on the larger 12.3” screen. Huge mistake, just ask Honda. 6. Shiny black plastic is just a fingerprint magnet. Use something else that won't show prints and get easily scratched up. 7. The rear turn signal lights are integrated into the bumper and are **too** low. 8. Offer it as a plug-in hybrid. Supposedly, they were waiting to see how the RAV4 Prime would sell and it's poised to be hugely successful as a PHEV. 9. Don't like the touch-sensitive controls in the dashboard. 10. Climate controls change the temperature 1 degree each time you press, unless you press and hold. Use knobs instead; they're faster. 11. With tax, it would be close to $60K in Canada.

Unfortunately, a hybrid. If you trade vehicles after 10 years or less you probably will like this vehicle. But for those that want a vehicle they can own for 10+ years or in excess of 150k driving miles get a gasoline powered vehicle. When it is time to replace the battery pack expect to pay $6500+. Should the AWD go out after warranty expect to spend $2500+ to replace this part. Trade in value will also drop faster than a gasoline powered vehicle.

The redesigned 2022 Lexus NX also rides on the Rav4 platform, so what does this Venza mean for the NX? This means the NX may get more sporty in its drive, and go in the direction of the Acura RDX The NX may go after a younger, more affluent buyer, where the Venza goes after the traditional "empty nester"

Pretty high praise.. Must be something; but this is based off the RAV4; wasn't the original based off of the Camry? That is too bad, as I didn't get the RAV4 but b/c of the lack of rear seat room w/ toddler seats. If that's the case; the Outback (if I want to stick to 5 seaters might still be the better pic) if I don't want Hybrid. Edit: Likely, the Outback will get a Hybrid (from Toyota, ironically)

Great preview. Toyota gave up some real world practically in terms of size/space but they have gained much more in terms of style over the competition. Although it still remains a CUV with a traditional layout they have done a great job with ditching the cookie cutter design. As most people won’t go off-road like marketing suggests, nor will they have it crammed full of camping gear, I forsee this as a runaway success.

Some buttons are so awkwardly placed in this car. I'm not a fan of capacitive buttons either. Some feedback is nice to have. Toyota had so much space below the shifter to out the push button start/stop and heated seats.

Seems to me Toyota should have just invested in more NVH padding on the Rav4 and called it a day. With the Rav4 being more spacious, better ground clearance, and already printing money, Toyota put a lot of R&D funds into something I don't see selling very well, (the Venza).

This Venza is called the Harrier in asian market which was Asia’s version of the Rav 4. Don’t know why they decided to export the Harrier to the US.
@markmiller3279

It already existed as a model elsewhere, so it cost them very little beyond marketing. The SUV market is so big that slicing it as finely as possible does have a logic to it. Some people, including me, don't find the rather truck-like styling of the current RAV4 very appealing. I'd rather have this.

So what exactly is the selling point for this vehicle? It’s a tad smaller than the Rav 4, way smaller than the segment it’s being marketed for, underpowered, no traditional moonroof...so why buy? Some previous gen Venda owners aren’t feeling it. Why not just buy the Rav 4 Prime or the hybrid Rav 4?

I suspect that the ride will be a bit better and quieter than the RAV4. Also has power front passenger seat. But I get what you're saying, it's mostly about style and doesn't add anything practical.

It's big enough for four adults and then some. The additional space in the RAV4 doesn't make it meaningfully better for most buyers. People with kids or who haul a lot of stuff would be better off with the Highlander. This is for someone who wants a more premium experience without getting the bigger vehicle, and who prefers sleeker styling than the rather truck-like RAV4.
@valdius85
@valdius85 3 жыл бұрын
It is longer in size than RAV4. Has more premium interior and styling. The naming is strange, it should just be called Harrier and be a new vehicle in the lineup. This is more of a modern hatchback for people who are afraid to buy a wagon.

Glad Toyota offers this, but keep in mind you can get an AWD Rav4 Hybrid starting for less than $30k. This will start around $35k, so you better be a bells-and-whistles buyer It's biggest competition will be the Rav4 Hybrid. If the Rav4 is too unrefined for you, get the Venza

not every component of the harrier was carried over to the venza. its missing a pair of foglamps (underneath the chrome lining at the bottom of the grill) and adjustable volume knobs for the mid trim spec. why is toyota preserving all the good stuff for japan only?

They should've added a sequential turn signal into the rear lights in addition to the tiny one which should be only there for legal reasons and not as an actual turn signal.

I own a 2015 OB & am actively looking for a replacement - specifically one with at least as much space and better MPG. Venza looks great from MPG standpoint - major bonus! However, even though its exterior specs are very close to current OB, lack of interior space similar to OB is a major downer for me. Even for relatively short gut at 5' 8". when I sat in the RAV-4 it felt claustrophobic with roof being too low for me. Given the lower roof line of the Venza, I anticipate it will be similar or more claustrophobic. I'll check it out but suspect the lack of interior space will be a major negative when compared to OB. Additionally, the low turn signals also a turnoff. I feel like they are low enough to compromise visibility in heavy traffic. Also the cargo area lift over appears rather high. I'm holding out until the 2021 Sorento Hybrid makes the scene before making any purchase. Honda CR-V Hybrid is looking pretty temping for this two time Outback owner right now too!

Being taller, I was hoping for a 2 row Toyota between the newly redesigned and shortened Rav-4 and the Newly redesigned and lengthened Highlanders which offers significantly less legroom than the 2019 model. Again Toyota does not fit our needs and if we are getting a 3 row Suv, there are many more accommodating new vehicles offered by their competitors.

Based on a quick check, the front legroom in the Highlander is 2 inches less than the old model. It's not like it was cut in half. You're entitled to your own opinions but not your own facts.
