I even knew that it is more sensitive to heat than basic carbon steel. But i thought it will be just fine to do it like i normally forge weld 52100. It was stupid of me to not try it first with some smaller billet. Bit pricey learning experience. I tried to make couple small puukko blades from the pieces that seemed to be ok but they snapped and apex ultra was burned inside even the sides seemed ok.

Does that sharpie help the welds stick?😛😁 jk. I've never seen nor used apex ultra, what kinda steel is it and what kind of scrap would it be in? Think I'd like a little bigger door hole, watching you try pulling the sword out for the quench thought ypu caught the door and possibly bent the blade fighting the door. Love the outfit you chose for testing the sharpness❤
@leppicknives9830 Жыл бұрын
Apex ultra has been on market mayby for a year now, it's high carbon steel that is designed by knife makers and metal guys. It has 1.4 carbon and can be hard as 66hrc after tempering. That high carbon content makes it easier to grumble in the forge and i just over heated it while forge welding the billet. It was fun to take bit more time and effort for testing. Making KZbin videos is a great excuse to do stupid stuff.

Does it make any difference with modern steel? The damascus folded steel would most likely be as good as any traditionally made sword. But how to test it...
@ErikvanUffelen Жыл бұрын
@@jaques2510 not sure but to me it feels like a traditional style is build to purpose, soft back and sides for parrying blows and hard core and edge for cutting. Damascus seems to be about looks, and and an general purpose steel. In a many folded damascus blade there is little no no control where the hard or more medium steel layers will end up.
@jaques2510 Жыл бұрын
@ErikvanUffelen would be an interesting test. A full traditional Japanese sword build versus traditional Japanese sword using modern steels versus modern damascua folded steel. All heat treated of course. My money would be on the modern damascus if folded properly.

This Sword looks much better in Person 👍
@ThatGuy18254511 ай бұрын
@@jaques2510Modern regular steel is better than anything that they could produce using the tamahagane method. Understand that I’m not knocking Japanese steel here. In ancient times Japanese smiths managed to achieve some truly shocking results with some extremely low grade raw materials. But to put this into perspective for you, in a bloom of 100-200 pounds of tamahagane, you might’ve only gotten enough material with enough quality to make one or two swords. The rest would be only good for tools and other weapons like spears. Not for nothing, but the quality of Japanese swords has more to do with the craftsmanship and the ability of the smith to turn middling materials into something more. This is why so much time and effort is invested into the creation of each individual sword, while the same smith might produce a hundred spears in the same amount of time.
