Well with a bunch of elbow grease, some new parts, a few scavenged part off the trusty rusted heap of a parts car and the odd part here and there that were sitting around the shop, we were able to get this hibernating Stang alive once again after sitting for 44 years! Nothing like hearing the heart beat of the trusty 289 straight out of Tri-Y Headers! Stay tuned for more episodes/ updates in the near future! Feel free to leave a like and subscribe to my channel if you liked what you saw!
Big thanks to Dylan, Kevin and Luke for the constant support with the video! Make sure to check out their pages!

I can understand many of the comments about pulling, but leaving this intact, doing essentially a poor-mans rebuild was 100x more interesting. Sure, you could send it out to a machine shop, bore, stroke you name it, but you guys did an awesome job going through essentially getting it running as if it was still 40 years ago recently rolled into the barn. Nice job. I like the fact that you didn’t paint parts either.

Finally! Someone who understands the point of the revival/videos! Thank you Edward! It's exactly that, simply just cleaning things up and making it a runner once again...and, for meager means cost wise. Will it survive? Who knows until I start driving it, but I would much rather try to get it going than to send it out to a machine shop and end up with a healthy bill to pay. If the engine doesn't survive, I have many others ready to go in. A simple carbed 5.0 L roller engine and a 5spd easy weekend swap! Haha yeah no point in painting parts when the rest of the engine (and car) are ratty! Cheers, Mike Thanks again for the comment and support!👍

Back in the day some cars could go through as many as 2 different sets of points in a year. For a tune up you would replace the plugs, cap, rotor, points and condenser. Just when I mastered points and adjusting carbs and understood choke systems they became obsolete. Nice double flair on the fuel line.

Man this brought back memories. I bought my first car back in 1981 and it was a 1964 1/2 Mustang with a 260/289. It what I learned on. I missed the simplicity and the engine bay space. Fuel ,spark ,air that's all they needed. A tip I learned for road repair was carry a spare points and condenser and a straight blade screwdriver and a pack of matches. For the timing space use one paper match (.017") and two paper matches for the plugs (.035). A lesson taught to me by an old-timer back then.

You got an interesting path to getting things running, I'll say that. I have been wrenching on old cars since I was about 12 or 13, mostly classic V8s but also some classic straight 6s from the late '60s and '70s. I used to - at a minimum - put in a new battery, coil, points, condenser, wires, plugs, coolant and oil, and filters before even thinking about turning the key. BUT these were just old and poorly maintained, never sitting for many years. AND I WAS BROKE! ;-) You do you, I guess. Nice to see this old beast run again.

This car looked like it had a 66 grill but in the first video it definitely had a 65 dash board so I'm guessing it had the grill replaced at some point in time. Old Ford's never die unless their mistreated in a big way. Good maintenance and they will run forever, even if you let them sit for years on end. The body on the other hand... they will rust, but of course so will any manufacturer's steel frames and bodies. My 96 E150 sat for 5 1/2 years, brake lines rusted out, but she fired right up with fresh gas and a good battery. An oil change new brake lines and she has been running like a scalded dog for me with standard maintenance for the last three years and still going.

Congratulations! I have a '64 1/2 and I wanted to point out a few non-engine things. Your heater hoses have been cut, so your heater won't work. Looks like you should fix that given how cold it is where you are. My car had a couple of brake problems. The line to the right front brake was clogged, and I didn't realize it, so I drove it for years on one front brake. I just thought, "it's an old car, they pull to the side under braking". Then one day the right front brake started dragging and overheating. Fixing it up I finally discovered that the line was clogged, now both front brakes work fine. The other problem was the single master cylinder, just like you have. The rubber seal around the brake pedal pushrod had failed, and every time I pushed the pedal, brake fluid would leak into my shoe! The cylinder was always running low and I had to keep filling it. Meanwhile the interior was turning into a swimming pool of brake fluid! I replaced it with a dual master, and now it's fine and safer besides. And I drained the fluid from the interior and washed the carpet, and for a while it had that new car smell. My car had the 3-speed manual transmission, and the output shaft bearing had failed, so the shaft would rattle around and destroy the rubber seal holding back the oil. So it was always leaking gear oil onto the ground. Be sure to check all bearings and seals before you drive it much. Anyway, congratulations and it's great to see another vintage Mustang coming back to life.

@@Statimtek pull the distributor, prime the oil, pull the gas line off at the pump and run a separate line into a clean gas container, fill the bowl of the carb, check for spark by pulling a spark plug wire off and putting a spare spark plug in it, ground it while someone cranks the engine. If you see a strong spark you should be good. If the car has been in good storage I wouldn't worry about pouring anything into the cylinders, if not maybe pour a little ATF in each.

Great Job Guys!. This video shows all the little things that have to go right to get an engine to run again. It takes time, patience and problem solving skills. You guys are inspiring a lot of people to get out and wrench on their old cars, myself included. ..Just as soon as it warms up a bit outside. Thanks for sharing.

Yeah, I've had a few people comment that the videos are dragging on, but I like showing the steps that it takes to get the cars going. I hate when I watch a video and it's a wreck of an engine then 2 mins later it's fully rebuilt... like what did I learn out of this? Also love reading the comments of people getting inspired to get back to work on their projects... also the video bringing back memories of back in the day! What car are you gonna be working on come spring time?

@@Theoldcarchannel. Well I have a 1966 Mustang Hardtop (Emberglo Metallic) that I bought in 1984 when I was in high school. It has the 289 2 barrel and a Borg Warner 4 Speed. With the help of my older brother we did the body work back then, the best we could..but the rear frame rails and now the engine needs work similar to what you did. (It hasn't run in a while because of the usual priorities...kids and money and time ).. It turns over but there is probably some rust in some of the cylinders...I also installed 6 rubber freeze plugs back in the day..lol. so I imagine they are pretty dry by now. I did get another 289 C code engine off Kijiji that ran recently as a backup...but it needs timing chain etc...It would be nice to get it moving again. Even back in the 1980's the Fastbacks always cost more...they made a lot less of them than the other bodystyles. Who knows I may put up a few videos..First one will be "On how to unstick... stuck front drum brakes" .lol. Cheers guys...Enjoy! P.S. I forgot how low these things sit. Ha ha..No tilt wheel!
