Greener Harpoon Gun - Yes, the One From Jaws

Imported into the US through the appropriately-named Navy Arms company, this is a Greener Martini action built into a "Light Harpoon Gun" by Webley & Scott in the UK. These were built as legitimate hunting arms, although they are far better known today for the appearance of one in the movie Jaws.
The intended use of the gun is to shoot large fish from an overhang on the bow of a fishing boat. It has an effective range of about 30 meters, and the line attached to the harpoon can handle a 300 pound load (with stronger lines available up to 1200 pound). A blank .38 Special cartridge is used to fire, and the harpoon has two large folding hooks to anchor it in a fish after striking.
The gun was shipped in a case complete with everything needed for use, including the gun, three harpoons, six lines, and two line frames. I was somewhat surprised to see that in Jaws, the gun is actually assembled and used properly, with the allowance that the line frame was not necessary. Well done, Quint!

The fact that it uses a .38 special blank, rather than a .30-06 or .303 or similar rifle cartridge would be another reason why it has a lot less recoil than a rifle grenade.

@@Thoroughly_Wet Momentum is linear to velocity, however energy is *not* linear to velocity, higher velocities quadratically require more energy. Thus heavier objects with less velocity can impart more momentum with the same given amount of energy. So in short yes mass does play a key role.

@@Thoroughly_Wet Recoil is more impulse than force, aka force/time. No one minds a 1 pound per second push over 10 seconds but a 10 pound per second push over 1 second is pretty rough. So the force causing the recoil is dependent, as you said, on the mass of the projectile and the velocity it travels. The time it takes for this recoil to be imparted upon you is dependent on the weight of the system. A heavier gun and projectile will take a longer time to accelerate into you, but will require more force to slow down, thus a long and consistent push. If you shot a 22 pistol, the recoil impulse is going to be very short and sharp, as the mass of the pistol doesn't take much time to accelerate, and therefore doesn't act as a shock absorber. Thats why the recoil of concealed carry guns can be notoriously bad despite a low muzzle velocity and a small projectile.

Kinda related, I was doing some work for the Scarborough Maritime Heritage Centre - which is currently running a small exhibition on RMS Titanic - and they just received back a lovely Schermuly Pistol Rocket Apparatus. This modification of a flare pistol was used to fire a rescue-line to boats that were in trouble. It used a large blank cartridge to fire it's 'rocket' (again the idea is similar to a grenade launcher), the rocket fed out a pilot line which was then used to pull across a larger tow line. It came packed in a neat case (like the Greener) with all the spare cartridges, rockets and line.

@Rick koontz As a kid, I ' know' someone who stole one from the bridge of a tug with an elderly, alcoholic watchman kind enough to let a gang of kids look over the boat and put the thing in the home coal fire to sweat off the steel rocket launching tube with its handle and kept the heavy brass pistol. It was awsome, the blanks it fired were about 2 inches in diameter and certainly put the wind up the neigbors! reading ' a lovely Schermuly Pistol Rocket Apparatus.' makes me sad at 'this idiots' vandalism long ago.

Air-bows are regulated as toys in Germany, and they by necessity have a hole for the air to travel through to the open cavity in the arrow... Now the fact that this uses gunpowder I think still classifies it as a weapon.

Just so you know: Speaking of law, this whole dart-over-the-barrel principle is apparently legally considered a "toy" in Germany, a country with one of the most strict gun regulations out there. Tobasco da Gama actually he wrote a few books. I read "WW Greener the gun.". Basically a history of firearms development and manufacturing techniques. He was more concerned with firearms development then anything and actually was concerned about the humane death of animals. His "Humane Horse Killer" was just that. Use that on a cow and you might not yield the same results. He took the time to study the physiology of the animal each one was developed for to ensure a quick, humane kill through the brain and the spinal cord. I don't think he hated animals in the slightest.

Hi Ian, If you're interested, I have a Russian made underwater handgun. It is pneumatic powered (you pump it up and it retains the air under pressure). It "fires" an eight inch bolt and has good close range penetration...buries the bolt at 10' very accurately. Yes there are several other small pneumatic spearguns (Nimrod and Mares) but this Russian unit is just slightly smaller than a .44mag Desert Eagle and is extremely light. There were also some .22 blank firing spearguns we used back in the day. We also use "power heads" attached to spears or "bang sticks" that use almost anything from .38 to 12ga. I know that bow and crossbows are legal. If you're outside the US Continental Limits (12 miles) and not shooting anything endangered, I think you an use this harpoon gun. It would also make an excellent line thrower. In the USN we use M14s to throw lines to other ships for underway replenishment. I saw one of these for sale in the mid 70’s at a store/ museum that sold all sorts of old militaria and antiques. It wasnt really a museum, but it sure looked like one. Great place to browse for hours on end. I asked the proprietor about it and he told me that they were imported for use in the Arctic by the native hunters for whale hunting. I don’t remember how much he wanted for it but it was more than I could afford at the time. I have been to the Arctic since and talked to Beluga hunters about their equipment. They use hand thrown harpoons and 30-30 rifles to kill the whales. No mention of harpoon guns.

Unfortunately, they are only legal if they produce less than 7.5 joules of force. In my basic maths that would only be enough to accelerate a 1lb dart to 5.7m/s or 18.9 ft/s. For comparison, airguns can shoot pellets at up to 500ft/s before being considered a firearm in canada (usa has laws that vary state to state, often with much more powerful rifles than what's legal in germany without licensing), think of how useless that dart at 18.9ft/s would be shot at a tuna (the legal power is only really enough to kill small animals like squirrels) Edit: A one pound sharpened dart would still deal substantial damage at slow speeds like that, but not enough to take down a tuna.

If you buy or build a weapon that accelerates a projectile sliding over the barrel, has the barrel blocked for projectiles shooting out of it (in practice cross-pinned), is gas powered (because blanks and blank weapons are regulated and blank weapons may only be produced by a learned gunsmith) and if it would not be a resemblance weapon (Anscheinswaffe in german, same thing as with toy guns you remove the orange tip of in some american states) there is no power limitation for it, public carry would not be limited, and there would even be no age restriction for its possesion.

This is true, and a good point, but you still need to embark and disembark from a port with said spear gun and the ammo to use it. The item itself is illegal in many countries who will not allow you to travel through their waters with it even if you are traveling to another location where the item is legal to use. Furthermore, national navies in international waters can still board you boat and commandeer it along with any illicit items as well as the owner of the vessel if they see international laws being violated from the vessel. I understand that the likelihood of any of this happening is slim, like quite slim, but still worth noting. It is a wicked cool firearm, though, and your point that "what happens in international waters usually stays in international waters" is well taken.

Regarding comparing this with rifle grenades remember that this thing is only shooting .38 special. Most rifle grenades were shot from rifles in calibers like .30-06, .303 British, 7.5 French etc. They would have more recoil, especially considering that this rifle weighs around the same as many of those rifles and the grenades weigh about the same as these darts.

I have seen somewhere that these, or similar guns, were used by navies as line launchers to connect a rope or cable between two naval vessels while underway. Instead of a harpoon tip, they used a soft canvass punching bag like projectile. Once the line was retrieved it would be used to haul over a larger line or fuel hose and then personnel, supplies or fuel could be transferred between the two vessels while the vessels were still moving.

After watching your presentation with the harpoon gun an old memory came back to me. I’ve vaguely remember seeing one of these harpoon guns spearguns aboard a dive boat in the channel islands off Santa Barbara California. Probably the mid to late 70s is when I actually saw this I did not have the keys because it was mounted on some kind of gun rack up in the wheelhouse. The captain was rather an eccentric to say the least. At the time I kind of thought that it might have been used for swordfishing off the California coast. How much did the harpoon gun sell for?

Regarding the powder charge I think it´s a similar powder like those in nail guns or bolters. Probably not burning too fast, but reaching substantial pressure which is held for a fairly long time to accelerate a pretty heavy anvil which then drives a hardened nail two inches deep into solid concrete.Or in this case here throw a one-pounder at least double, likely more than triple the useful range, so up to a 100yards. Mythbusters appearently used a standard .38special blank for their test, and even that did quite well although it´s probably much less powerful. The blanks for line throwers or nail guns often seem to be whimpy, but inside they are quite serious stuff. If seen nail guns in .25rimfire blanks with 6 locking lugs or other ones in 9x17 with just two lugs, but those had about double the locking surface of a Mauser 98 system, some of those guns had chamber walls near 1/2".

As many times as I've seen Jaws, i should have recognized it as a Greener/Martini action. Neat item. I suspect the blank catridges are loaded kinda hot to propel that heavy dart, hence the warning on the box. The box also does not identify them as 38 Spl,no doubt to lessen the chance of someone putting them into old, weak revolvers. "Farewell and adieu to you fair Spanish ladies....." I assume that the cartridge was based on the Webley .38, which was intended to give a power eqivilent to a .455 round, and given the warning on the side of the pack they must have increased the load. Put one of those in a normal .38 and I imagine you wouldn't forget the experience in a hurry...
