I am an adult convert from Protestantism as well. I remember my first confession in 2012 very vividly. There were a couple of sins I struggled to actually verbalise as I was so ashamed. I remember Father saying when I finished confessing, "We thank God for a true and good confession." I just melted and cried. I then heard the words of absolution and it was like so much of God's grace was in that confessional it was going to burst open. :-) I remember kneeling down in the pew afterwards and the best I can describe it, while looking at the altar after doing my penance, I felt this heavy beautiful supernatural warm blanket of love over me. It felt amazing and I knew at that moment it was the love of God. Thanks be to God!

I'm a convert. I served in the military and spent quite a bit of time away from my family and worked exclusively among men. My first confession, right before my baptism and acceptance into the church was arguing with my wife, not spending enough time with my children, and cursing too much. SO Father spoke to me, determined that I wasn't using the Lord's Name in Vain, and told me that the words I was using were vulgar, that they were probably unbecoming of a Christian, but they weren't sins. He absolved my sins, and as penance told me to do something nice for my wife, spend more time with my kids, and try to watch my language. And to be honest, I was dissatisfied, I would have punished myself much harder. I went to Confession rarely after that, not never, but several years between each confession. But there were two things I never confessed, things I'd done as a young teenager that felt too shameful to confess. I prayed about those things thousands of times over close to 40 years, and it didn't matter, the shame never went away. And I finally decided that I would confess to a priest I had high regard for. So I planned my confession, went into the confessional, and told Father, "I'm a convert, and there are a few things that have bothered me since I was a teenager, and I'd like to confess...." And he cut me off and told me those sins were forgiven and washed away the day I was baptized into the church. And for me it was like 'Jaw drop - I never thought of it that way before'. And I went on to confess smaller sins, and he gave me absolution. You know, I've never, ever have confessed those two sins, but when I walked out of the confessional to pray, I couldn't picture the sins I'd gone to confess, it was like they were behind a thick curtain, one that I could probably look behind if I tried hard enough, but there was no need to look, for me they were gone. That was maybe seven or eight years ago, and I've never forgotten that confession, or how annoyed Father was that I tried to confess a forgiven sin, but those sins are vague memories that I feel no need to revisit, that I've never spent spent a moment of worry about, and that I've never prayed about again. I remember as a Protestant saying that Catholics confess then go out and commit the same things again and again. And there is some truth to that, though my experience is that I'm given practical advice on how to avoid my sins that really have helped me to avoid repeating certain sins. But the big truth is, as a Protestant prayed over and over about my sins, I never obtained the peace and feeling of forgiveness that I feel after confession and absolution, and I still repeated those sins over and over again as a Protestant. So I guess I would say Catholics and Protestants both sin, but Catholics are the ones who feel forgiven.

That's a wonderful words to say about confession...and also for me going to confession is a humble way of saying that we are so sorry that we offended God. It's not only about ourselves, it's more about showing that we respect and love our God with sincerity for admitting our own mistakes. God knows our weaknesses and He's waiting for us to accept that and He's ready to celebrate everytime we come back from our sins and mistakes! God bless us!

I felt the same thing when I finally confessed the one sin I've always thought to be embarrassing and grave. Even to the point I was afraid i'll be excommunicated (I don't know much about this whole thing back then), and it was terrifying. I was so afraid to live the rest of my life apart from Christ. After hearing my confession, I confessed only that one sin at that time, it took around 30 minutes because I went through all the details with tears and the priest listened patiently. After I was done, I looked at the priest (face to face confession) and his eyes were read; I suspect tears. Then he said "I absolve you from all your sins since birth." I was speechless and I embraced him before leaving. The night before that I prayed to God that I want to confess that sin only under personally requested circumstances: 1. I wanted it only with that particular priest because I have very high regard of him (trust him that much) although we don't know each other personally. I just liked every time he holds a mass. 2. At lunch time because I was still a college student at that time. 3. Face to face. I don't want any veil to hide my shame. If God was to be angry at me I wanted to be hit by it 100%; because I have sinned. Then when I went to church at lunch time of that day, I was still outside of the Church and the priest was giving his homily. It was him. My heart started beating really fast, then amidst what he was doing, the priest looked at me from the altar and our eyes locked (take note I was outside of Church). While waiting for the mass to end, I prayed the Divine Mercy; the unfathomable Divine Mercy. Then finally, the mass was over, I asked the Priest if I could confess, then instead of going to the confession box, he lead me to his office. Then I saw that it was going to be a face-to-face confession. That day, I experienced God's Providence, unhindered Will, and Divine Mercy. Truly, "No sin can ever separate us from the love of God."

For the past two years, I haven't confessed my sins. I don't have the courage to do so. I just confessed it to God. But deep inside I have felt a heavy heart. And so, I decided to go to confessionary last two weeks ago. When I knelt down, I cried alot because I felt ashamed of myself. It was really hard to admit my sin infront of the priest. I felt vulnerable. But after the priest told me that God had forgiven me along time ago, I felt truly joy. Now, I really do my best not to commit any sin. Also, the Rosary helps me to avoid temptation. Thank you for this talk. This encourage me to confess once a week or atleast once a month. Through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, I can do this. For me, going to confession is a blessing!. Some times, I feel uneasy because I am admitting what sins I have committed and for me, it is overcoming pride, it is being humble before Our Lord, and renewing the promise of being obedient. I see going to confession as a means of getting spiritual counseling. Also going to confession infuriates devil because he can no longer hold those sins over one's head because one has been forgiven.

I carried so much guilt and shame in my heart I believed I would not be welcomed back into the Catholic Church. The moment that God said you have had ENOUGH! I called a priest the next day and scheduled an appointment. I was nervous, I was scared but I had to release it all in confession. The moment the Priest gave me absolution I cried. I had forgotten Jesus words! But..He forgave me! He wanted me back home! I recieved the Grace of reconciliation in such a way that I felt renewed! Released from the bondage of grave sin. I am back. It's going on 4 year's since my return. I work for the Diocese I live in. Without disclosing too much...What a blessing God has given me. He wanted His Daughter to receive Him in such ways I never imagined. Thank You Jesus. And thank you Keith for your YES! 🙏💙

@@waltermromanoff349 We know that God does not listen to sinners. He listens to the godly person who does his will (John 9:31). So how can you ask God for forgiveness if he does not listen to a sinner? You do so by confession and asking a Priest who has been given authority by our Lord Jesus to forgive or retain sins on earth (John 20:21-23). And where did our Lord Jesus get the power to forgive sins on earth? Well God gave it to him (Mathew 9:6), and our Lord Jesus also said to his disciples that all power is given to him in Heaven and in earth (Mathew 28:18). So if our Lord Jesus shared his power and gave authority to the disciples then who are we to say otherwise? Confession has always been a sacrament of the Catholic Church since the time of the Apostles and early Church Fathers, “Confess your sins in church, and do not go up to your prayer with an evil conscience. This is the way of life. . . . On the Lord’s Day gather together, break bread, and give thanks, after confessing your transgressions so that your sacrifice may be pure” (Didache 4:14, 14:1 [A.D. 70]). As for call no man on earth your father (Mathew 23:9), Our Lord is rebuking the Scribes and Pharisees, ultimately, Jesus is condemning the usurpation of the fatherhood of God, not the proper participation in that fatherhood. "The context of Matthew 23:9 emphasizes the sin of pride among the scribes and Pharisees. They loved to be called “teacher”, “father”, or “Rabbi,” but their pride pointed men to themselves rather than to God the Father from whom they received true fatherhood and in whom their fatherhood subsisted. Outside of God the Father, there are no fathers at all in the true sense of the term. But in God, we have all sorts of true “fathers.” Tim Stables. St. John twice refers to the leaders of the church in Ephesus as "Fathers" (1 John 2:13-14). St Stephen under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, calls both Abraham and the elders of Jerusalem “father” (Acts 7:1-2). St. Paul refers to himself as “father” (I Corinthians 4:14-15). Can I ask how do you address your biological father? Do you call him Mr Romanoff? Do you call him sir? Do you call him by his first name? Do we no longer acknowledge Gods' fourth commandment to Honor your Father and your Mother? If we were to literally follow Jesus words than Mathew 23:9 would cancel out Exodus 20:12 would it not? No because our Lord Jesus did not come to abolish the Law but to fulfill it (Mathew 5:17). Remember our Lord Jesus taught in different ways like praying, in parables and in healing. Also St Paul warns if you sin wilfully after having the knowledge of truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins (Hebrews 10:26). Here St Paul speaks of the sin of wilful apostasy from the known truth; after which, as we cannot be baptized again, we cannot expect to have that abundant remission of sins, which Christ purchased by his death, applied to our souls in that ample manner as it is in baptism: but we have rather all manner of reason to look for a dreadful judgment; the more because apostates from the known truth, seldom or never have the grace to return to it. If you truly seek the truth friend then do it not just from your personal feelings or bias but with an open mind and heart. God bless!

@@fabiotuan5206 Your claim is not true! Look at scripture carefully and you will see God gave our Lord Jesus the power to forgive sins on Earth (Mathew 9:6) and people glorified God who had given such authority to men (Mathew 9:8). St John says “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just, and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). After rising from the dead, our Lord Jesus shares his power and gives the disciples authority to forgive or retain sins (John 20:22-23). St Paul forgives the incestuous Corinthian by the authority of Christ (2 Corinthians 2:10). St James says “confess your sins one to another and pray for one another” (James 5:16). That is, to the priests of the church, whom (in ver. 5:14) he had ordered to be called for, and brought in to the sick; moreover, to confess to persons who had no power to forgive sins, would be useless. Hence the precept here means, that we must confess to men whom God hath appointed, and who, by their ordination and jurisdiction, have received the power of remitting sins in his name. (cf John 20:22-23). Our Lord Jesus said to his disciples that “He who hears you hears Me, he who rejects you rejects Me, and he who rejects Me rejects Him who sent Me.” (Luke 10:16). And he had also given power to the disciples to tread on serpents and scorpions and upon the power of the enemy (Luke 10:19). So as you can see friend, confession is biblical and a Sacrament instituted by our Lord Jesus Christ himself.......

So when I first confess my biggest sin i was so nervous and very anxious but after confession, i felt God has forgiven me. The priest told me to avoid that sin and he advised me what to do. Confession is an amazing gift from Jesus. He set it up that way so that people from all walks of life whether smart, mentally challenged, an adolescent, a kid, old people in other words everyone would be able to get it when they hear the words of absolution from a priest. That is how we are saved and Jesus said He will always be with us which is true He is in the church literally as a bread that came down from heaven that we eat and His blood that we drink during mass which is that awesome grace as we participate in the heavenly worship of the mass for that one time sacrifice of Jesus on the cross beyond space and time which is literally done every minute or second of every moment somewhere in the world for the salvation of those who follows and participate and abides as the body of Christ which is His flock that He loves so much.

A few years ago, I reconnected with my faith and struggled with the thought of going to confession. I finally went to confession after 40 plus years. It felt wonderful and a huge burden was lifted away. Asking forgiveness in your mind is easy, confessing to your priest requires humility, sincerity, and a touch of courage, every opposite of pride which leads to sin. I love the gift of confession and it absolutely tears down walls that I was unaware existed in my heart. Our precious Lord knows exactly what we need in our humanity. The act of receiving the words of absolution does bring healing. So often the walking wounded are moving through life being loved and forgiven by God through His son but they live as if that forgiveness is not theirs. I love the way you put it, hearing it helps you to RECEIVE the forgiveness. Receiving is an act and in the case of confession, it's an act that opens the door to Grace.

After I was done, I looked at the priest (face to face confession) and his eyes were red; I suspect tears.

Great story Keith!!! The really sad part is that most Catholics don't even go to Confession...they never really experience the joy, peace and sense of relief a good Confession can really achieve. Confession has great moral power to help us appreciate the Eucharist even more...it can also help us conquer sins that can't be otherwise conquered. One more thing....Priests also go to Confession...they're also sinners just like us and more often than not, have the same temptations and sins on their conscience that we have. CHEERS!!!

Don't worry ... When we confess our sins... We are not confessing to a priest... Jesus is in the center of a priest and a confessors.. Look at Jesus and not the priest...examined our conscious and make a true confession of all your sins. Mortal sins and venial sins.. sins against the ten commandments.. sins against the Holy Spirit... as against Holy Eucharist... with out examining our conscious... To draw closer to God we need to make our confession every time when we sin and to receive the Holy Eucharist with a pure heart, mind, body soul and spirit... We find Gods' love peace and joy....I love going for confession ..I find the love of Jesus speaking to me through the priest.. I just pour out my sins to Jesus..And Jesus forgives all my sins.. I feel very light after making my confession.. The first confession I made ..I cried so bitterly.. I Lord I am a sinner.. I am not worthy ... I was full burdens and problems. I was healed of all my burdens and problems...Thank You Jesus for saving my life...

My fear with confession was to do a bad confession, its was over a year ago at a church event and to my surprise there was no queue. I did not have time to quieten down my heart and think about my sins, it was messy. I still feel the peace of absolution at the end but it did not felt as strong compared to just spending 5mins to pray first to be humble and honest for confession and think about the sins I done before going in. My first confession was like every burden in my life was lifted from me, I felt lighter and could breath better, I felt free :D

This is so beautiful. Keith do you know why you felt the way you did at the absolution? I still feel this way at every confession. Because as in the words of Consecration that the Priest says at Mass, it's JESUS saying those words through the Priest. When the hand of absolution goes over you, that is JESUS himself absolving you. Only God can forgive sine! How wonderful is that. The Priest is In Persona Christi (it's Jesus in the Priest) by the way, in you and in me, when we are in a state of Grace. Also St. Faustina's Diary of Divine Mercy confirms this. (An approved Mystic is today's Prophet). Entry (1602) Here the misery of the soul meets the God of mercy (1602). I Myself am waiting there for you. I am only hidden by the priest ... I Myself act in your soul (1602). God Bless and Keep you Keith. You will be as if running to Confession like a little boy...Our Blessed Mother is giving you everything you missed in your childhood. For me one of the things was having the Scapular placed over my head by a Priest as he prayed for me. I skipped back to my pew like a little girl. Great experience. Fiat!

I came home to the church back in 2003. When I went to my first confession before confirmation I had the same concerns you did. I had over 50 years of sins to confess and I didn't want to forget and leave anything out. I didn't want to mess up. I didn't want to have to tell the priest things I wouldn't tell my closest friends. While waiting to go into his office I starting thinking that if I left out I could confess it next time, and I assured myself that I couldn't confess anything the priest hadn't heard before. But the priest helped me though it and I made it through my first confession. It's hard to describe the wonderful feeling I had when I was given absolution. Yes I would say going to confession is in the top ten of why I'm glad I became a Catholic. One thing I've noticed that after I've gone to confession the day seems brighter and the world looks more beautiful. I've know it's been said a million times but I always feel like there has been a burden lifted from me. But most important is I always feel closer to Jesus and I can more readily feel his grace and love. I only wish my circumstances would allow me to go more often.

About 26 years ago, at the age of 9, when I attended my first communion and confession classes, one thing stuck with me that our Catechist taught us about the sacrament of confession. He told us that while we make our first confession to the priest, he is God's chosen servant who is the instrument of Christ, and through him we're confessing our sins to the Lord, that he's there to listen and always ready to absolve our sins. Up to now, when I go to confession, I would confess my sins to God our Father saying, "Father, I did this, I did that…" as like I'm talking to God himself and it's an incredible feeling, with the priest physically being present there listening and giving counsel and about to absolve and forgive my sins after I say my contrition prayer. Confession is a healing and peaceful sacrament, and also helps transform us in becoming good people and living out God's calling in our lives. It's one of the sacraments I love that after confessing your sins to God with a repentant heart & spirit, your sins are forgiven and you get to receive the gift of grace and absolution from our Lord through the priest and is truly a blessing. I do feel light, at peace and good, and you even get to experience God's loving mercy and healing power through the sacrament spiritually, mentally, emotionally and physically. It's absolutely a wonderful sacrament that we get to experience God's unconditional love, forgiveness and mercy upon us His children. Thank you Keith for your videos, I actually enjoy it especially from a converts perspective. It's interesting, inspiring and you give good down to earth talks of your catholic faith, filled with genuineness and passion, and you are a blessing 🙏 God bless you for your faith and your family.

I love going to confession. Sometimes I do think that the priest is going to think less of me, though, but aside from the fact that he hears so many confessions that he probably doesn't remember what I say, it is true that he is more of a physician than a buddy. I like my priests as people, but it's important to remember that they are priests first and foremost, and so you shouldn't be afraid to confess anything.

Well, the fact of being afraid, or rather ashamed, about going to confession is quite normal, but there is something very important in the Sacrament of Penance which should help us to overcome all fear or shame: to know that the Church grants us a complete freedom to choose a confessor. No one is obliged to confess to this or that priest, we are fully responsible of the choice of the priest who will hear our confession as we are responsible of the choice of our phyisician, our psichologist, our therapist... at least the private ones. Some times we may make bad choices, we may be desappointed by some priests, as we may be disappointed by some physicians, therapists, psychologists... We simply made a mistake... What shall we do in such cases? Renouncing to go to confession anymore? Absurd! We need confession as we need to see a doctor... What shall we do, then? We simply change confessors, as we change physicians, therapists... until we find the one we need, the one who will be able to help us. And we need to pray in order to find him, specially to our Gardian Angel, to put that wise priest in our way...
