"in the age of him she wished she was thirty" - The manuscript Here's a breakdown of the most-telling lyrics from the song, which seemingly recounts Swift's relationship with Gyllenhaal and finding closure with the 'All Too Well' short film. (I've shortened it, but you can find it online) Notably, the bridge seems to reference how Swift was able to find healing when she re-recorded the song for Red (Taylor’s Version) and created the All Too Well short film starring Sadie Sink and Dylan O'Brien, which ends with her character turning the heartbreak into a bestselling book, aka a manuscript. "Now and then she re-reads the manuscript / Of the entire torrid affair" Taylor Swift performs onstage for the opening night of "The Eras Tour" Swift begins the song by noting how she sometimes goes back and reads the manuscript of the “torrid affair.” This could reference how Swift quite literally relives the story by singing “All Too Well” during the Eras Tour each night. Additionally, she previously referred to the relationship as a “love affair” in the lyrics for the 10-minute version of the song. "They compared their licenses / He said, 'I'm not a donor but / I'd give you my heart if you needed it'" As Swift continues with the first verse, she makes reference to her and her former lover comparing drivers licenses and making jokes about giving their hearts to each other. Taking car rides together is a major theme of “All Too Well”; she sings about them taking a trip to upstate New York together. Additionally, the 10-minute version of the song features the now-iconic lyric about her ex tossing her car keys (with that memorable "F--- the patriarchy" keychain). "In the age of him, she wished she was thirty / And made coffee every morning in a French press" In this lyric, Swift seems to be calling out the nine-year age difference between her and Gyllenhaal, who was approaching 30 when they dated. An age gap is also addressed in the “All Too Well” 10-minute version (Swift sings, “You said if we had been closer in age, maybe it would've been fine / And that made me want to die") as well as in another song thought to be about Gyllenhaal, "I Bet You Think About Me," in which she pokes fun at an ex who was constantly acting superior to her due to her lack of culture (it memorably winds down with "Now you're out in the world, searchin' for your soul/ Scared not to be hip, scared to get old"). Meanwhile, the coffee lyric could be in reference to the viral paparazzi photos that showed them sipping on maple lattes in Brooklyn. "Afterward, she only ate kids' cereal / And couldn't sleep unless it was in her mother's bed / Then she dated boys who were her own age" In the following lyric, Swift sings about how she stopped trying to act more mature than her age to impress someone, and instead dated people her own age after her relationship with her older beau ended. Notably, after splitting from the actor, she dated Conor Kennedy, who is a few years younger than her, and Harry Styles, who is about four years younger than her. "And the years passed like scenes of a show / The professor said to write what you know / Looking backwards might be the only way to move forward" As with most Taylor Swift songs, the most striking lyrics appear in the bridge as she recounts slowly moving on from the relationship as the years went by, only to write about it again years later. This seems to be a nod to her re-recording the original song for Red (Taylor’s Version), while also releasing the 10-minute version of the song as a vault track. "Then the actors were hitting their marks / And the slow dance was alight with the sparks" After making a quick reference to the years passing by like scenes of a show, Swift further hints at the All Too Well short film as she notes how “the actors were hitting their marks” and “the slow dance was alight with the sparks.” This seems to be a reference to the scene of Sink and O'Brien dancing in the kitchen in the refrigerator light during the short film, which Swift directed. "And the tears fell in synchronicity with the score / And at last / She knew what the agony had been for" These lyrics seem to indicate that reliving the relationship through the song and the short film helped to be cathartic in achieving closure. She also notes how her pain was turned into art that affected so many fans, noting that she finally realized what the “agony had been for.” During the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2022, Swift further opened up about creating the emotional short film, noting how it was initially really hard for her to perform the song live. "I needed 10 years of sort of retrospect in order to know what I would even make to tell a version of that story visually,” she explained. “And I'm so grateful that I was able to do that with some crazy stroke of all these different twists of fate. I can't believe it." "The only thing that's left is the manuscript / One last souvenir from my trip to your shores / Now and then I re-read the manuscript / But the story isn't mine anymore" Swift ends the song by indicating the story has gotten bigger than it ever was on the page. Swift has made similar comments like this when discussing “All Too Well,” specifically noting how her fans’ love for the song helped her overcome the pain that came from writing it. Swift told fans about the All Too Well short film at its N.Y.C. premiere. “It started out as a song that was my favorite,” she continued. “It was about something very personal to me. It was hard to perform it live. Now, for me, honestly, this song is 100 percent about us, and for you." but at the end of the day, we're all free to interpret music anyhow we want

The Manuscript is about John Mayer. It is NOT about Jake Gyllenhaal. When you wonder if everything was above board or not, you are literally questioning if something was morally/ethically or legally ok. Not one lyric about Jake Gyllenhaal on Red asks if them being together was morally ok or not. The entire song is John Mayer coded. Literally almost every line about the older man is John Mayer coded. As in she directly references more than one John Mayer song in the lyrics of The Manuscript. It really upsets me that people relate The Manuscript to Gyllenhaal. She is expressing trauma in The Manuscript. Not one song about Gyllenhaal expressed trauma. Very bad heartache. Yes. Trauma. HELL NO. There is a direct line between the trauma expressed in The Manuscript and the trauma she expresses in Would've Could've Should've. I wish people would actually listen to her.

@@emmavink are you serious? There’s plenty of songs on RED (including All too Well) in which Taylor talks about their age difference. That he called her a kid, said that if they had been closer in age maybe it would have been fine and so on.Taylor has of course not said who this is about. But, I’m hardly not the only one who believes that it’s Jake she’s talking about here.

When “Jake” was putting more and more dishes in the sink it’s a metaphor of him piling more and more bs on her. That scene was done in one take and was done by the actors as a first attempt at running the story on their own, based on Taylor’s notes. They nailed the idea so perfectly that she used their first take of them doing it on their own. She said that she hired two talented actors, so she wanted to trust their instincts. It worked so beautifully. “Taylor” has always said she struggles with anxiety and he would have been privy to that information so she’s just needing a little bit of security by holding his hand. He didn’t pay attention to her in public but when it was just the two of them he was lovely. She was very confused about the relationship, especially at her age and he was a whole decade older than her. Watching young “Taylor” (Sadie) crying on the bed was absolutely soul crushing.

The fact that both their points were valid reinforces why this kind of age gap doesn't usually work. 'Too impaired by my youth to know what to do'. The issue, though, is that he knows better, and he's deliberately using all of this to gaslight her into thinking something is wrong with her and it's her fault. He clearly knows that she is falling hard, and giving him EVERYthing and he just lets her, knowing he's not going to keep her. That's the actual sin.

This argument could have ended by him just saying I’m sorry, I’m sorry you felt that way, it was not my intent to hurt you. But instead he gaslighted her and turned it around to it being her problem “she’s crazy, selfish” Pay intention to how there are closeups on them holding hands in several scenes but when they are around other people he doesn’t want to acknowledge her. He’s acting different After the “fight scene” there’s lovebombing. They are dancing, being physical, holding hands… This is toxic! If a partner treats you anywhere similar to this, get out! Know that you deserve better! 🫶

Shit got me looking at Jake so differently too because people don't really just imagine these scenarios or this behaviour, it's just not the kind of thing I think people can even really think of for a story without having it actually happen. And now that it's so long after she's older and wiser and has the time and the life experience to realize that it wasn't just this intense relationship she struggled to get over, she struggled to get over it because he was low key abusive to her. That treatment from someone you're already infatuated or invested in, really messes with your head. She would have felt crazy, she would have BEEN crazy, because he was making her that way.

I will say this till I am blue in the face. The Manuscript IS NOT about Jake Gyllenhaal. It's about John Mayer. She is expressing trauma in The Manuscript just like she did on Would've Could've Should've. And there are at least 2 direct lyric references to John Mayer songs in The Manuscript. It drives me crazy that people try to make everything about Gyllenhaal. She didn't write an entirely new song about Gyllenhaal 13 years after him. She did write an entirely new song about John Mayer 13 years later. I wish people would listen to her.

@tomidrac9719 yes, I actually agree with that. Which removes it even more from the All Too Well (10 min) short film as that only shows one relationship 😬😉 I'd even be fine with the idea that part of the description of the older man could be connected to Gyllenhaal. But not the issues of wondering if the age gap was morally acceptable or not. That reads Dear John and Would've Could've Should've loudly.

@@emmavink Then the actors Were hitting their marks And the slow dance Was alight with the sparks And the tears fell In synchronicity with the score This is clearly her talking about turning All too well into a short film, how else could you interpret this? I reread the manuscript But the story isn't mine anymore The manuscript of the song that turned into the manuscript of the film. She has said before that this song used to be hard for her to sing, but because it was received so well by the fans it turned into their song. Writing the song initially, then re-recording it and then making the short film was healing for her and now it’s just a story but no longer her story. Also yes the age gap is mentioned, but she also sings about that in all too well “you said if we had been closer in age maybe it would’ve been fine, that made me want to die”. The manuscript doesn’t say anything about the relationship not being morally acceptable. That relationship was very painful for her, but it didn’t seem to be as traumatic as the one with John. The manuscript talks about pain and agony but not about trauma like WCS. The song is clearly about all too well.
@emmavink2 ай бұрын
@Anja3416 no. The word "alight" means ON FIRE. It ONLY refers to a NATURAL flame and light. The word does not mean lit up like an artificial refrigerator light. One of Mayer's most famous songs is Slow Dancing in a Burning Room. A slow dance is not mentioned in All Too Well. A dance by a fire light is not mentioned in All Too Well. A light caused by sparks is not mentioned in All To Well. That line in The Manuscript has NOTHING to do with All Too Well. The phrase/idiom "above board" LITERALLY means legitimate, honest and open. So when he tells her it was ok that she was so young because she was "wise beyond her years", he is gaslighting her and dishonestly trying to make her agree that the age gap in their relationship was ok. She has DIRECTLY SAID in more than one song now that she KNOWS the age gap between her and Mayer was morally and ethically not right. "Don't you think I was too young" and "if I was a child did it matter if you got to wash your hands". Not one part of that is connected to All Too Well. Not to the lyrics of either the original or 10 min version. Not to a single image or dialogue from the short film. Stop cherry picking and trying to pigeon hole lyrics that you are purposefully misinterpreting into a shallow and popular narrative. It does not fit. You are always going to have to be pretending that Dear John and Would've Could've Should've doesn't exist, or that she never dated John Mayer to make your theory fit. You would fail a poetry assignment if you tried to argue that "dancing round the kitchen in the refrigerator light" is closer to "and the slow dance was alight with the spark" than "Slow Dancing In A Burning Room" is.

Love your videos! Here’s my personal recommendation for where to go next with Taylor, may be unpopular but it’s just my opinion. There are obviously no rules for listening to her music. Next: 1) Lover - this is her 7th album and the only one of her “modern” (post-masters being stolen) records you haven’t listened to yet. Personally, I think it makes sense to finish this collection of eras before diving into her early stuff. Came out in 2019. 2) 1989 - this is the most well known album by “hits” and still has some of that maturity. Released in 2014 when she was in her mid-20s. 3) Fearless - Her most approachable country album, has some classic hits and beautiful lyrics. A good introduction into baby Taylor. Came out in 2008 when she was 18. 2nd album. 4) Speak Now - My personal favorite! Bridge between Fearless and Red that’s mainly about her first experiences with adult love. Released in 2010 when she was about 20. 3rd album. 5) Reputation - Another personal favorite! Some of her most mature sounds. Hopefully by the time you get here the Taylor’s version will be out (we’re waiting Taylor…) so you can experience the vault songs. Very different from anything that came before and so much fun! Can be polarizing but it definitely doesn’t lose out on complex imagery if you look for it. Released in 2017 when she was in her later 20s and had just experienced being cancelled. It was kind of like her comeback album. Album number 6. 6) Finally, debut. Definitely an acquired taste for most newer swifties but it is so fun to trace how her concept of love and the world at large has changed overtime. Very much a country album but still a very good listen and so insanely impressive since she was 16 when it came out in 2006. Obviously, her first album. Again it’s just a suggestion but I hope it helps!

Meh, I think people misinterpret that scene. It isn't a cool move, but people don't look at the context. His character is having an angry conversation with someone else on the phone. He doesn't want to keep driving because it isn't safe. And he doesn't want to have to make his GF listen to an angry conversation. He also doesn't want her to have to wait outside in the cold, so he chucks the keys at her. In that scene, he isn't throwing the keys at her with any spite or malice. He isn't throwing them at her feet on purpose. He throws them towards her without even looking back properly at her because he is focused on his phone call fight. It's uncool that he burst out at someone else in front of her. It's uncool that he threw the keys at her without focusing properly. But she also shows that the second he is done with the call, he is conscious that it wasn't cool to be so angry around her. In all her lyrics about him, it comes across that he is an AH who does hurtful things, but he doesn't do them with forethought or malice. That's why she could write a song like Better Man. He wasn't a horrible human being. He just treated her really badly. Sorry for the long thought process. It just always surprises me that people interpret this scene as him deliberately and with malice throwing the keys at her feet when this doesn't seem to fit the actual context of the scene.

I've only heard one person say this and I think they are correct where u mentioned her as a writer and u know how it says the first crack in the glass, the reeling, etc....those are the chapters in the book!! I think that's correct and I swear during the fight since day one I hear Sadie call him *Jake" u really have to listen. Lastly I wonder if at the end his watching her means he's still trying to reach out to her all these years later. Thoughts? Wish this wasn't chopped up but I get it. 🎉❤👏 Btw the girl is Sadie sink from stranger things. He's Dylan O'Brien from teen wolf and the maze runner. Oh and I'm the credits if u keep watching it says the guy at the end scene gets ready for this laugh...his name is JAKE LYON! not many will ever catch that ❤❤❤🫂🫂🫂

I think the bf character keeps on emphasising the hand dropping in that argument scene because by itself, it is a fairy silly thing to get upset about. Trying to force PDAs on a partner during a social interaction that isn't about the partner or their relationship can even be quite a manipulative move. However, the gf's character just used that as the example of what upset her. She very clearly articulates that it is his overall dismissal of her during the night that upset her. Not just one incident of hand dropping. So what the bf is doing is to emphasise the hand dropping move, when really what he is doing is avoiding to own up to the fact that it is a shitty thing to do to ignore anyone, let alone the person you are in a romantic relationship with, who is also the new person in a groups, for an entire evening. If he can gaslight her and make her feel childish about the hand dropping thing, he never has to own up to not being a supportive partner.

The idea of the dinner throws me off.... they're going to know who she is. She's a superstar, even back then. They might have talked to her more than him.

Not necessarily. A lot of people looked at her quite condescendingly even though she was famous. They acted like she was only popular with teenagers and looked down on her for being too girly. Like they didn’t take her seriously at all.

to double down on what you said the last scene of her reading her book to HER FANS is the LITERAL representation of her singing the song to HER FANS.

my ex and i only dated for 6 months but it took me 4 years to get over it. it was a very toxic relationship and he was the absolute worst but it still took everything in me to be able to let it go (and he got married in that time lol) so forgetting is so long is actually so true

I think the word for the gathering you are looking for is *INCLUDED* it was HIS job *(and it shouldn't even be a job and more like a "normal reaction")* to include her in the conversation ESPECIALLY if she doesn't even know these people. a person can be outgoing *(like she is, she is by no means an introvert)* but if they feel uncomfortable or like they don't belong *(in this case)* because of an age gap then maybe EASE UP that discomfort by MAKING HER FEEL INCLUDED... making THE EFFORT to INCLUDE her instead of leaving her to her own devises and start up conversations by herself when AGAIN they were not her friends

He was gaslighting her so bad during the kitchen argument. I've been there. You can't argue with a controlling, pompous narcissist. But watching it makes me madder every time! 🤬🤬🤬
