That last part ... not taking life too seriously, spot on. Although I believe there's a fine balance, my experience is it's much more likely we are taking life too seriously than not seriously enough. So thank you for that reminder.

Very informational video. Thanks! Quick comment/question: for a long time I used diaphragm breath to the point that I neglected the upper part of my lungs. The result of this were occasional gasping breaths or even deep yawns. To correct that situation I begin doing this: ensure that diaphragm and lungs are relaxed, then do diaphragm breathing while filling up my lungs. New problem: I was overfilling my upper lungs - raising my shoulders. Very uncomfortable and TENSE! So, I made MORE CHANGES. Now it seems to work because it feels much more relaxed! Very relaxed diaphragm breathing while slightly filling up my upper lungs. THEN, I ADDED a STOPPING CUE: as the upper lungs fill up partway, momentarily stop the in breath (to avoid overfilling my lungs). Once I get into the rhythm of it, the stopping cue becomes unnecessary as the entire breathing cycle is very relaxed and I am no longer overfilling the upper part of my lungs. Forrest, does this make sense?

So you're saying I just need to watch Dumb and Dumber to go into Samadhi? :P All jokes aside, a little levity is absolutely necessary in everything we do. It reminds me of this Buddhist proverb: "Act always as if the future of the universe depended on what you did, while laughing at yourself for thinking that whatever you do makes any difference." this video is so good!! hahaha, definitely made me laugh a lot because i am big proponent of having fun sometimes, because sometimes people think that having fun and watching dumb movies or youtube videos is "low vibrational" and this kind of thing haha, but it's really not that serious! and also the beginning was an excellent reminder for me about lifting the shoulders which is a habit that i have and initially started to stop doing it from intuition and then started again for a few days and the spiritual eye wasn't coming up like it used to and then i watched this last night and came back to that and had a beautiful darshan of the eye this morning. thank you Forrest!!

my breath loves to pick up momentum and before I know it I am taking super long breaths, but comfy normally. what will happen that is not comfy, is it falls to far past my pelvis and has a major pull. when that happens it falls out of a rhythm. Hi Forrest, Do you recommend breathing into belly vs chest, or visa versa ? Or both, but first one then the other ? If so, the which first and which 2nd ?
@ForrestKnutson

First the belly, and then a little bit into the chest. But not so much that the shoulders raise. Progressively the breath should move down into the belly where it is almost all the belly.

Thank you very much for this video, this was really bothering my mind for long time. I have two questions: 1. I am not able to hold the rhytm when doing HRV, or meditating at all. What I mean is from time to time, I have to get deep inhale, I just feel i do not have the proper amount of air in my lungs. I've heard that it could be the sign of some unresolved problems in my life which manifests like this. I feel holy trinity of breath sensations, sometimes after few seconds. I feel I am progressing step by step (I'm now at 3 breaths/minute, started with 6 a year ago). These deep breaths are very, very energetic, my hands are literally burning (not in the unpleasant way) and I immediately transfer this energy to the rest of my body, sometimes, after this deep breath, I feel like my body doesn't have any weight at all, and sometimes I get very deep freeze response. So in one way I go deeper and deeper with these inhales, but I loose the "holding still" position, when inhaling, I am a little bit more awakened. And when exhale - boom - deeper and deeper. Does it mean I am loosing my ability to get benefits from holding still for longer periods? Should I work on this, or just wait and progress with I've accomplished so far? I mean - from time to time, after n-th of this deep inhale - I get into state that I do not need to breath:), meaning - my breath is so light I do not feel it anymore. Then my sympathetic system wakes me up - hey! you need to breath! :) 2. Can you make a video about proper position when meditating? How to sit, how to adjust your les, back, etc? Thank you again for your work :). Greeting for Poland :).

Hi Forrest! I’ve just started using your app and I think I’ve hurt myself 😕 I went straight for 4.5 breaths/mn at 30/70 rate for 15mn, filling my lungs to the maximum (I didn’t know you should breathe into the abdomen)... it felt fine to be honest, but my sternum has been hurting since (2 days ago) with some kind of muscle pain. Probably inflated my lungs too much. I love the app and will definitely use it again as soon as the pain goes, it’s just better to start gently as you recommended!
@ForrestKnutson
@ForrestKnutson 3 жыл бұрын
Yes absolutely! We always have to start with what is comfortable and proceed very gently. It's the only way that we can possibly enter into the parasympathetic system. If we are in strain of any kind then we are in the sympathetic system which is fight or flight. So obviously that's not conducive to deep meditation right? I hope you will feel much better very soon! Good oils from runny eggs and avocados are very good for the lungs. For the brain too!

You are such a gift to humanity Forrest! Thank you for another amazing video. I have been using your HRV Resonate Breathing Guided Meditations on KZbin. 3.5 Breaths per minute feels great and I get the HHH, lips etc tingling and eventually the freeze response. The vagus nerve feels a bit 'vague' but I'm trying to focus in that area. My question is should I be using the app you mentioned today or can I just continue to use the HRV videos. I usually start with 3.5 and at the end of the 11 minutes either replay it or try the 3 Beats video or just continue quietly on my own. Really appreciate the time you take to answer everyone's questions! Soon you will have millions of subscribers so I better ask mine before you'll be too busy to answer all of them :-D Thanks so much again :-)

Forrest what are you thoughts about combining the HRV breath rhythms with practices such as Nadi Shoodana (without retentions) & Ujjayi. Not as an alternative, but rather as an supplementary methods - Sri
@ForrestKnutson
@ForrestKnutson 3 жыл бұрын
The HRV Resonant Breathing will accomplish balance in the nervous system just as alternate nostril breathing aims at. And you get the added benefit that you don't have to raise your arm. This allows you to follow the rule of SVS. Also as you lengthen the breath in HRV Breathing you will automatically control the glottis and so you will be doing a Ujjayi breath without ever having to be taught. I can teach HRV Breathing to little kids without ever having to mention control of the glottis and they will accomplish it correctly. I talk about this on a video a little bit back called the Sublime Version of Ujjayi.

Forrest, thank you for your channel. I am exploring it bit by bit and finding answers to some question that I've had for a longest time about what happens to breath (and everything else) in meditation. In meditation and while doing HRV breathing, I get shaking around the spinal column every now and then. In your opinion, should I try to stop that? It feels like some kind of release and often also comes with other body parts trying to stretch out. I guess kriyas is the word commonly used for these types of movements. Let them do their thing (that often feels good afterwards) or try to stop?
@ForrestKnutson
@ForrestKnutson 3 жыл бұрын
Wonderful Natalie! Yes let them shake out the automatic movements. As they happen you can think to yourself or say it to your unconscious mind, "that's good now get it out of your system" so that your unconscious mind gets the idea that you are going to return to stillness. This is a really great question I should do a video about this automatic movements.

@@ForrestKnutson Thank you for the answer! A video on the subject would be amazing. Meditation teachers do not seem to have a consensus on how to approach these. :) Depending on the tradition they say to either ignore or stop these, but I've had some epic movements especially when they first started to come up where you are shaking/moving for the whole meditation and then feel such a relief/fluidity as if you had the most amazing yoga class or massage so that there is no tension in the body at all. I've also heard an opinion that they might happen because of incorrect meditation posture, however, they do happen in all sorts of postures and when they first started (years ago), I would get them even when slightly concentrating on something in daily life. :) Would be great to hear your point of view since you come from such an interesting perspective.

@@n.w.4925 absolutely. It's a process so some of these are so powerful you wouldn't be able to stop them if you wanted to however over time they should lessen and adorize so that they are less physical and more perceived internally. @@ForrestKnutson It's true. So... it's ok to tap deeper into sympathetic for a couple of seconds or longer, if we are able to go back on to parasympathetic, right? I think it has to do that I've lived for a very long period of my life stressed, and the last 2 years I've learned to tap into the relaxation switch, so when anxiety turns back on, even if it's for a little bit, it feels very overwhelming. I start feeling fear about getting onto a positive loop again, being unable to switch to parasympathetic and such... it just feels so awesome to being able to keep all my senses open, that when they obstruct, I sort of panic to get to that openness again.
