Forgot to tell you- we went to a Shell Show in Melbourne, FL on January 21. The show gave out ribbons for best of show. I was SHOCKED to see many of the shells were harvested and taken with live critters in them. I thought if anyone would be picky about not taking live critters it would be a Shell Club.

How awful, it should be illegal to take live creatures, for display purposes, from the beach.
@SWFBeachLife Жыл бұрын
Agreed!!
@SWFBeachLife Жыл бұрын
That's actually why I didn't share my Sanibel Shell Show experience. I was so upset by seeing so many specimens with their operculum, and I knew they had been collected live. I personally don't think killing a snail is worth its shell. AND...it's not illegal to take live creatures expect protected creatures like the Queen Conch and Bahamian Seastar. At least here in Lee County it is illegal to take live critters from the beach but that's not the case in all of Florida.

@@SWFBeachLife True ! Many places in this world are keeping their fishing industries just as they were in Victorian times. Some species are in such demand and or live so deeply that you KNOW men don't dive for them fully willing to come back empty handed. Actually, it has been their national industry, and I really do understand that. The Queen Conch is well known, but most everyone visiting the Islands desired conch steak. The locals had been eatin' them for genrations already. But it has come to the point the Queens can't keep up. They are much older when they breed than previously thought !. They're so truly fascinating. They have rainbow target striped eyes and a tail like a lion. The Goliath, larger than the Queen, is probably extinct. Also, The Queen Helmet is barely hanging on. Cameos are the reason why. My books from the '60's instructed me to capture and kill gastrpods, but it was never my desire. (I am sorry...the two orange areas are like the Alternate. The Sunrise is a more narrow bivalve. Still pretty !. Awesome fossil. A word about fossils: "it's later than you think "). Bottom line: do not toss out old shell collections ...they are no longer a dime a dozen.Some are over fished, like Tiger Cowries. Everyone has one, or more . Some are still circulating from the Varnish period !. I saw a roller from the 1910 World's Fair !.

Hi Beach Angel! I really needed some of your warm sunshine today, as it was cold and rainy, with heavy snow in the mountains. I'm so excited to see your mystery find. Let me hit PLAY. Oh, before I forget, my books came early. One is an Audubon guide on shells. The other is one of those waterproof folding pamphlets on the shells of your area's beaches. Very cool. It might come in handy for my Panhandle shelling trip. BBD has really been finding treasure there lately, like the beautiful Sundial he found recently. I have begun gathering my gear for my own shelling adventure and am excited about that. I let my bestie's grand daughter have my good net and my collecting bag because they go to the beach a lot. Pray that my husband and I stay healthy enough to make that trip. I'm coming if I have to crawl! I could see the shells better that way, anyway! The morning sun shining on the wet sand is good for my land-locked soul. Thanks for that shot at Beach Time. Lovely! Beautiful angel wing, that one. I tried all through my life to find a whole one. Still looking! Dang! That ancient shell is absolutely amazing! The sea god gave you a small treasure as a way of saying he's sorry for causing so much damage when Ian made him angry. There's no telling where the shell has been hiding for all those years, or maybe it's not extinct and you just find the proof of its existence. That shell looked pristine and not like it's been around a long time. It would be bored badly by now. Hmmm. Is there anyone you could show it to and verify it? Maybe you're famous and don't know it?! That big bluish moon snail makes me think of the ones Jamie finds up on the northeastern coast. It's a beautiful tellin, no matter which subspecies it is. I've found sunrise tellins up around the mouth of Pensacola Bay, but not recently. (The last time I was there was in 2009. I haven't returned because I have a bad memory of the trip. My late husband and the love of my life had a stroke on the beach at Ft. Pickens. We were allowed to take him home as soon as he was stabilized, but he passed a few weeks later. I think it's time to put that bad memory to rest.) I thoroughly enjoyed my beach time with you, dear Angel. I look forward to our next adventure and to seeing what you found there. Much love and many shells, Becca, The Lost Mermaid🧜

I think you really do enjoy my beach walks as much as I do! And I can get lost in those shell books! Actually shells in general have a way to taking time away from me. I'll go over to a dish of shells to do something and the next thing you know I've got them dumped out and I'm going through them again. Gosh they're fun to play with! And I agree with some of the moonsnails I find down here. They remind me a little of those massive ones that can be found up North. You sound so great and strong - keep up the good work! 💪🏻❤️

That was an awesome trip to the beach! The hinged albino prickly cockle was soooo cool! And, of course, my favorite was all those tinies!

I sort tinies in a little box for fly fishing. It's white with a clear lid, so everything shows up.

What a wonderful beach visit. So many awesome shells and live animals. It’s blessing to watch your videos. I love the knowledge you share. The hinged jingles were beautiful. The fossil shell was an AMAZING find. What a gift. Thank you for sharing. Blessings!!!

Little butterfly's, it is beautiful if you stuck them on a small canvas and paint a tree for the background and paint the tree branches where you stuck them. 👍👌

A tip I've picked up to get more delicate shells, including the hinged jingles home in one piece is to find two cockles big enough to carry them, and they will keep the delicate shells together until you get home to unpack

Brilliant! I usually have a little plastic container with me but a cockle would work too!

At 10:15 Cut-ribbed Ark is Anadara secticostata or synonym: Anadara floridana. But that one in your hand is probably Anadara transversa. At 11:05 that is really nice, in mint condition it seems. For those delicate little bivalves: you could try to put them in a jar filled with water or with soap powder. At 24:25 that looks like Eurytellina angulosa (Gmelin, 1791).

I miss Terry. 😉 The fossil is an awesome find! Whenever we're in the UK, fossil hunting is on; we once saw an ammonite the size of a truck tire! Florida is an excellent fossil-hunting area, too - perhaps you could team up with someone like Paleo Chris to go on a shark tooth fossil expedition!
@SWFBeachLife Жыл бұрын
I have seen some of Paleo Chris's video. They find some neat stuff and I'm fascinated that they know what they are finding. I guess people watching me can say the same thing 😃 He did help me out with a UV flashlight recommendation.

Hi Sharmon I love watching you every week. I would be at the Beach every day collecting shells. I have a question: I would like to start making chimes with all of my shells. Do you think that I could put a hole in the shell with my wood burner so that I could put wire through and attach the shells to each other?
@SWFBeachLife Жыл бұрын
I leave the hole making in shells to my husband. He uses a Dremel tool with a diamond bit. Shell are really, really strong so it's a challenge to get holes in them!
@donnajohnson3334 Жыл бұрын
I'd say not, since shells don't burn. Please do be careful with a drill, shells are slippery. I've heard the best way is place them on a firm tray of sand to help them hold still. Place bivalves cup UP and press them into the sand open side up. I might use a brick of plasticene instead?. Be mindful to wear some protective goggles. P.S. Yes, I will say this, and hope you take it in a good humored way, since I mean it very good humoredly: Please do not drill holes in any perfect highly sought after "lust" shells, lest someone pitifully( such as myself) should see a drilled Junonia or rare Trident and require smelling salts and 2 Tylenol !.
