Even though Metallica is the ultimate success story for metal (and King's point is correct, they DID open the door for a lot of heavy metal bands), it's interesting how James and the crew act around King Diamond/Mercyful Fate. There is a definite level of respect that has nothing to do with the relative success of each band. You can just see the way James launches into the riffs (and the vocal contributions too) - he is a fan of Mercyful Fate and loves their songs. It's cool to watch (as a fan of both bands).

you make a very valid point my friend. These guys have not been on stage in 18 years but do you really think that for a Metallica gig they did a whole lot of rehearsal? Mercyful Fate was one of the pioneers of metal and as you stated they need no explanations from a bunch of punk kids who barely hit puberty it's like telling God that he fucked up on the Ten Commandments

So glad that they had Michael Denner and Hank Sherman play their own solos. No matter how well you know the notes, there's sooooo much to be said for idiosyncrasy. In fact I can remember how frustrated I used to get 16 years ago when I was trying to learn Mercyful Fate solos and wondering why I could not sound like Denner and Sherman. Notice how spooky Sherman sounds and how greasy and pained Denner is? I mean, Mercryful Fate could not have been what they were without those sounds back in the early 80's.

I've been trying to get that "sound" ever since I first heard "The Oath"...The solos on that album are haunting, not just from the keys they are played in and the inter-dynamics between Denner/Sherman......but also the acoustics of the recording venue...they sounded like they were playing in a cavern deep in the bowels of Hades...That album (to me) is the essence of Heavy music,...captured.

Long live the King! I love the way this guy uses his head voice and falsetto effects with his own vocal chords!!!! I hope Merciful Fate makes a comeback. I think is one of the best bands of the 80's Metal. My all time favourite song by them is "A Dangerous Meeting"

Yeah, gotta go with that. Dangerous Meeting is one of the greatest purely metal songs ever recorded. An all time favorite of mine. The other is Desecration of Souls. More metal than anything the big four ever did. I said Heavy Metal, not thrash. What a great video. Fate and 'tallica together. They had NO IDEA how lucky they were.

For those of us that were around in '83-'86 Metallica were one of many great bands and they weren't the biggest game: Slayer, Venom, Mercyful Fate, Possessed, Destruction, Celtic Frost, Exodus...I still see it that way, record sales aren't the main thing. This is the coolest thing Metallica has done in decades--why no DVD sets?

It's funny how life works. I'm almost 50 now. Some of my friends don't "get" my music tastes. They're listening to "Duran Duran" or some such garbage and I'm still tuned in to Mercyful Fate/Crowbar/Pantera etc... I'm also a classically trained pianist...so they really can't figure me out!lol! I heave slightly when I hear the newer "metal" bands. Bleah...they all sound the same to me. Give me Maiden, Priest, KD...you know the rest. "IF IT'S TOO LOUD...YOU'RE TOO OLD"!! Love seeing bands get together like this. You can tell Metallica truly appreciates KD and the boys and their help when they were first starting out. ROCK ON!!

They're crap to me. Then again ALL music is simply judged through the ears of the listener. It and the electro-80's as a whole are nails on the chalkboard to me. No redeeming musical quality to most of it IMHO. They were as popular for their looks as their sound back in the days of "Tiger Beat" magazines and such.
@daveholden6299

Some commenters are using the wrong standard. Extreme vocalists like King Diamond performing live don't have the advantage of several takes and the mastering process used for albums. The more extreme the vocals, the more likely the singer is to be "off". Add to that the fact that King's been doing this for over thirty years, and it's inevitable that sometimes they won't "sound like the album".
@lukasstrait9307

Kim was 55 years old when this was recorded. Somebody thinks a 55 year old should hit the notes the same as when they were 25? He was damned close 30 years later. Let's see them get anywhere near that close at 55. Hell, he's 63 now and on tour in November. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it.
