Glad to see some opposing opinions, everyone else’s I’ve seen has bowed down to found north. Whiskey over 100 dollars needs a more critical review
@apeekintime
@apeekintime 9 ай бұрын
Too many other reviewers feel obligated to like something because a channel they enjoy said it was good... Some channels just give their opinion and then 4-6 other channels do the same video and parrot the same thoughts. Clearly not a cheap lineup to buy but Curiosity Public roll pretty deep it seems when it comes to a whiskey budget. Except Jules who is a one shelf Andy.

Very odd tasting notes from the three. Seems like they’re just disappointed it’s a Canadian whiskey that’s not over loaded. Every found north I’ve tried brought a smile to my face and I consider myself a bourbon and rye guy

I thought Dutch acted bummed out from the very beginning. Naturally everyone "loosened" up a bit as they went through. Also Jules' rag comment was spot on. Pun intended.

I felt the pain of watching Jules attempt to read something with an emotionless face. That is me with a menu in a dimly lit restaurant. Is whiskey ruining our eyesight?

Great flight. Jules was buzzing after Batch 4. Dutch hit his stride at Batch 7. Dillion didn't slur until the last single barrel. Dillion- great collection. Luv Found North. And Nick from FN always makes himself accessible to the masses. Hats off!

Most Canadian whiskey is just distilled as a single grain whiskey. They will make a 100% rye, corn, wheat, or malt whiskey. They age those all separately. The rye is usually in new oak (so they can sell it to American distillers as straight rye). Then they blend those individual components back together and then maybe finish them. These don't have additives, but Canadian law allows up to 9.09% additives to be blended in. They often will add sherry or port in leau of actually finishing the whiskey. If the whiskey is destined to go to America, they can blend in bourbon as those additives and they get a tax break on importation.
@apeekintime
@apeekintime 9 ай бұрын
Aka.. if just says "Whiskey" and it comes from Canada you are buying a whiskey product... which who knows what going on inside the bottle. That 9.09% additives rule is so silly - some literally blend in fruit juice and tea (I'm looking at you Whistle Pig). Tells you the quality of your distillate when you need to add wine or other additives to make it palatable.

Thanks for doing this Drinkthrough! Found North is favorite whiskey I have Batches 7, 5, and 3. I agree with y’all’s critique there is little to no fruit/jam flavors. But I think the spice and sugar flavors are amazing and has had the best mouth feel and finish of cask strength whiskeys. I love Alberta too but too much cinnamon on the palette for me.

The Batch 7 is objectively good. Earlier batches miss the mark, but the 7 is sweet, complex, & has a good finish.

@@philc1884 why would Canadian distillers sell 18-25 year old whisky for cheap to Found North? Its because these are reject barrels. Crown Royal sells 20 year old whisky at 40% ABV for $400. No way are they selling great stock to Found North for $100

Nope, I loved the Found North I’ve tried. I haven’t tried everything from them yet, but I’ve tried batch 1, 2, 4, 5 and a single barrel rye. Each one was delicious! The mouthfeel was great, too. Every one was buttery with a good deal of spice. I’m a big Alberta Premium Cask Strength fan too. I wouldn’t describe any of what I’ve tried as bad or bland. I know everyone’s palate is different, but 🤷‍♂️

In terms of aging... you can think of these ultra-aged Canadians as Scotch grain whisky in terms of maybe the expectations you should have for maturation over a certain period of time? This coming from my experience with a Wiser's 35yo I have. It doesn't drink like 35yo malt, it drinks like 35yo grain... which drinks like 15yo malt? I dunno. I've liked the Found North I've had (and the Wiser's is nice too) but it doesn't fit into my own sense of scale developed largely in KY and Scotland.

I have a couple batch 7's and have tried samples of a few others and they are very good examples of blended Canadian whisky, IMO. Looking through youtube and Reddit as well as many other online FN reviews, you look to be in the minority. The price of these is high but so is 90% of NDP sourced whiskey.

It's hard for me to consider Found North's Single Barrel offerings an actual "single barrel" with multiple blends of whiskey varieties. Just do a single barrel of rye or something. The marketing is confusing.

Pulling out the Alberta Premium and all agreeing that it is better than a whole shelf worth of more expensive whiskey... yikers. Alberta Premium Cask Str is basic on the nose but it is a great whiskey experience for people who enjoy American Bourbon and Rye. To me it's a decent step down compared to stuff like Stagg and even Rare Breed on complexity and interest but overall... its MUCH more approachable for any novice whiskey drinker and can be enjoyed by anyone. Great stuff. I actually smashed like 20% of my bottle the first night before realizing it because it was so easy to drink. Then I stood up and I realized what I'd done... and passed out on my dogs bed. It happens.

I think the comment Dillion made about not being able to identify a brand profile is right on, these blend bottlers who's following is based on batches are really maybe only a couple of unsavory batches or bottlings away from losing that base who are willing to croak up the big dough for the product, I think Barrell figured it out when they finally came out with their Foundation Blend at $50-$60.

Nope, not a drop of Alberta Premium in there. Most of the corn (likely Barley as well) probably comes from Hiram Walker, the rye from Valleyfield in Quebec or Paliser (Black Velvet, although it is in Lethbridge Alta) The wheat likely from Highwood Distillery also Alberta but in High River. Alberta Premium comes from Alberta Distilleries Ltd and is owned by Beam Suntory

I wish you had the Peregrine in this considering the recent hype (and $200 price tag) with that bottle. I really enjoyed #3, #6, and #7 though my bottles have had time to open up. The single barrels have been really hit-or-miss for me, though. I love one and hated the other two, because I guess I didn't care for the finishes.

Very interesting lineup. These things were getting some hype and they just showed up near me. At $100-200 they are too much of a risk to me for a Canadian whiskey. The age statements are impressive but old Canadian whiskey has always failed to impress. These are priced like a premium product and it doesn't seem like they are. Also... the different heights on the tall bottle labels is annoying as hell. These sitting on your shelf would look so bad (like they do on the table). The bottles are cool but they are very inconsistent with their labels.

These are from reject Canadian barrels. They can try to blend and finish in other barrels but it won’t change the fact that the base whisky just isn’t that good. Distilleries won’t sell 18-23 year old whisky for discount prices if its quality
