OPs mother needed to know, this thing happen to my grandma, not at this extreme but my grandfather cheated on her and had a kid, nobody told her so she did not know... she died not knowing his husband betrayed her still believing his lies. This by extension, meant that she was betrayed by the rest of her family as everybody chose to hide it indirectly protecting my grandfather, i was a kid when this happened and i feel so guilty even if i couldn't know.
