I had known for some time that Bruce Hudson's 1974 Dodge Challenger was out there somewhere; I just didn't know where. After years of looking, I finally found it. Hudson, a 22-year-old Deckhand on the Edmund Fitzgerald, bought the car brand new in his hometown of North Olmsted, Ohio just one year before he went down with the Mighty Fitz in 1975. I not only found it in pristine condition, I also got to take a ride in it, listening to the fascinating stories from Dave Laube, who currently owns the well-kept machine in Bruce Hudson's honor. There was one more bombshell from this story that came out of nowhere, so stick around for that near the end. Trust me, this one's a must-see. Thanks for your support...to the crewmen on the Edmund Fitzgerald, may you #RIP. #EdmundFitzgerald #historymysteryman #GreatLakes #ShippingDisasters #LakeSuperior #BruceHudson

Believe me, Bruce's Challenger is in great hands and his memory lives on. Dave (current owner) stumbled upon the car more than a decade ago when the previous owner asked him for his help in its disassembly to make (engine) modifications. Dave quickly pointed of the importance (and value) of keeping the Challenger as Bruce left it and the disassembly / major modifications never happened. While the two were friends, I would guess the previous owner sensed Dave's love and appreciation for the car because when he was ready to sell, Dave was the person he called. The car is amazing..... not restored, but well preserved, just like Bruce Hudson's memory.

Can you imagine being 22 years old and owning a great car like this? The 70's were the best time to be a young person, in my opinion. I was 14 years old on November 10, 1975 and I would have loved to have gotten a ride in a cherry car like this! Even the Zippo lighter takes me back. Man, those really were great times. I'm so sorry for the loss of Bruce and other men on the Fitz.

Just starting in his adult life, making darned good money for a 22 year-old man and with a still-new 340 Challenger….road-trip planned with his buddies once the run was over, and a little one on the way. Life was pretty good for Bruce Hudson….up until that storm hit on the 10th. Makes one wonder what the stories were with the other men aboard the Edmund Fitzgerald(we know of Capt. McSorley’s intentions to care for his wife)…..Don, thank you for bringing a piece of the men’s lives to light. A big thanks to the men who have cared for Bruce’s Challenger in the decades since his untimely demise…

Bruce sure was doing well for himself at the time of his unfortunate demise. The economic troubles for many families impacted by the recession of at that time had greatly impacted many small towns, communities, and businesses in the Great Lakes area. Good paying jobs we’re far and few between for young men with no real experience at any skilled trade in their lives yet. So glad I stumbled across this post. Though I didn’t learn much about history in school due to my bad choices back then, I’ve developed a real fascination for real life stories surrounding a historical event. Thanks to all for sharing their experiences and findings pertaining to this awesome real life story.

Watching this brings me to tears as I can imagine my layers Brother John - who would have been 21 at the time Bruce left this earth - would likely have been fast friends with Bruce…same age…both motorcycle enthusiasts…and both with the love of muscle cars and the dream to head west. John had a 1969 Chevelle SS and a Suziki street bike…and traveled west on his bike twice - from Dayton, Ohio. What an enduring tribute to Bruce Hudson. Cheers to you Bruce! ♥

1973 was the last year that the 340 was available. It was replaced by the 360 in 1974. The fender tag on this car has E44 engine code on it, which means it’s a 318 2-barrel car.. The VIN is not as clear in the video, but it must be JH23G4, again G for 318. What is clear, is it didn’t leave the factory with a 340 between the fenders.

That's what I was going to say, you beat me to it. If that was a "Rallye" Challenger in 1974, the largest engine available was the 360. You could get the "Rallye" package with the 318 engine as well.

Standing on the point of the east bank flats in Cleveland, I often think about the merchant mariners out there, I use to work on tow boats and always wanted to work on the ore carriers. I was born in Michigan, Ever since I was a kid I always heard and knew about the Fitzgerald. I still at times look across lake Erie and know this lake is the calmest of the great lakes, I also like to think this is the very lake those men would see and would smile

One of the most haunting songs ever written and performed was The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald by Gordon Lightfoot. A lot of things about the wreck are also haunting. I experienced something myself. I didn't realize at the time but got spooked years later after a little research. I was driving truck expediting auto parts. Driving from Detroit to Sandusky on US 2, I stopped for a rest on the eastside of Toledo and parked in a warehouse lot not paying to much attention to my surroundings. After a snack I started to look around were I was parked. There was a warehouse to my right and a very large lake freighter on my left. Only about an eighth of it exposed, the rest was behind trees and brush. It was a white in color and had the name William Clay Ford painted in red letters on the side. I was amazed at it's size and being as close to it as I was, it was just across the road from where I was parked. Several years later as I was watching a documentary about the wreck I learned The William Clay Ford was the only ship to attempt a rescue. My God, I saw that ship I thought to myself. This is the spooky part, I learned that the William Clay Ford was scraped years before I saw it. I KNOW WHAT I SAW and I saw the William Clay Ford as plain as day, no more than fifty yards away. It was the most ghostly white in color. I'll never forget that color.

Excellent vlog! Not just brought back a wonderful young man into our memory but also brought back times which I lived and miss dearly. When the Fitz went down I was living in metro Detroit and driving my 1973 Chevy Camaro to Wayne State U. 5 days a week. At 65 now and having been on other continents I can honestly say that the Fitz was the largest moving object I have ever seen. I was at the locks less than 3 months before she went down and took a few photos as she passed. They are posted on my channel on this site.

Great car. Chrysler was the last of the muscle cars. Gm and Ford were done in 72 and 73. I have a 2016 challenger. Love it! My second one. Bruce had good taste in cars. I live in madison ohio on lake erie. I was only 5 when the Edmund Fitzgerald went down. But alot of its casualties were from around here. I know several people that were friends with some of the deceased. I just think about what was going through their minds at the very end and what their lives could have been. Bruce looked like your typical young person from the 1970s. Long hair etc. Love the Gordon Lightfoot sing although sundown is my favorite drinking song. God bless the memories of those 29 men that lost their lives on that fateful day.

This is amazing, great video, I lived in Duluth years ago, my landlord, now past, he was Chuck Montgomery, told me when he came in my apartment one day and saw my ship book collection, saw the book on the Fitz tragedy asked me if I actually read the book, I told him I had, he said he was crewing on the Arthur M. Anderson the night she went down, I was shocked and asked tons of questions, I am from California, and had moved to Duluth,, MN and I had heard the song in the 80's when I was a kid and that song got a hold of me, the first time I stood on the edge of Lake Superior, it was May, and the wind was cold and strong, the waves were kicking up, I walked to the Marine Museum and they have a model of the Fitz as it looks on the flood of the lake, your video is spine chilling, you got to ride in Bruce's car, now THAT is cool, btw, I loved the old muscle cars, but that one?
