They tend to play from shorter tees as well anywhere from 6200-6600 yards. Average male golfer probably plays 6800-7200 yards. If you relate in distance, try moving up a tee or two so you are in that yardage... see how well you play then

I am glad you did this. I am often frustrated by the amount of 20 handicappers I hear insisting this is the case and I think it's hogwash. If distance were the only determining factor of scoring well, Kyle Berkshire would be unstoppable on the PGA Tour. It helps the guys in "The Show" because it is an added component to an already loaded arsenal. Thanks for another goof video Matt.

I started playing golf with a MacGregor Nicklaus 1 iron....bought at a thrift store after watching of all people Nicklaus in midd 1970's. I used that one club.....(all I could afford), went to the range and learned how to hit it....low, high, short, long, left, right...then I found " How In Play Golf, and tried to replicate his swing.. I then found Hogan's book and went that direction. When I started I could play under 80's easily because I was long and could produce shots. I carried a Bobby Jones Jr 8 iron with faux wooden shaft, a MacGregor persimmon, Wilson 8802, Wilson Harmonized Wedge, Wilson Fluid Feel Bullet Back 5 & 7 iron, Hogan 3 wood ......all bought at thrift stores for $1. Guys I used to meet up with would think I was a ringer because I hit it so consistent and played shots....high, low, left, right depending on the hole.....high for front pin, low for back for example. Then I subscribed to golf magazines and started reading instruction and overthink my swing instead of using the one built from the dirt. I would try to hit that long drive on long par 4's get into trouble and have to recover. Since my shirt game was great I would recover with a boggy but still that was strokes lost. I played one day after skipping work and ended up playing with a pro from Korea who was doing the same. I learned from her to play within myself. I already naturally long so just needed to keep it in the fairway. This reminds me of those times in 1980's. I now have good clubs but never played as good with those as I did with mix match clubs. I was deadly with that Bobby Jones Jr old Spaulding 8 iron.

There's a course here in Australia in a place called Coober Pedy where everyone drinks beer and lives underground. It's desert course called Opal Fields Golf Club which has reciprocal rights with the Old Course St. Andrews. I really want to get some new Miura Blades and show them some love on that lovely mining town gravel... That is my dream / bucket list course
@alexanderjefferies77403 жыл бұрын
Actually it is a common misconception. The club does not have reciprocal rights to the Old Course at St Andrews. Although it’s synonymous with the name St Andrews they were granted reciprocal rights to the Balgove Course. The R&A have a portfolio of courses and it’s a nine hole layout near the Old Course , and according to the agreement, the term St Andrews was used but never ‘Old Course’.

This video touched on the great advice I received many years ago from the local pro - don't alter your swing, club choice or game based upon what your opponent is doing. It's golf, so everyone makes mistakes. Minimize yours by sticking to YOUR game, and you'll end up more successful in the end, and be able to enjoy the game a lot more 😊

I played that course many years ago. It was 36 degrees in the shade and about 99% humidity. There was a bar every 4 holes, so you can imagine how messy it got by the end. A pro's consistency will outweigh the amateur's erratic game 99.9% of the time. The only way I could see the distance gap being an issue is if there are holes where you must carry the ball a long way to reach the fairway/green over hazards without a layup being possible. Love the videos! Great job!
@GolfSidekick3 жыл бұрын
True
@jhaz893 жыл бұрын
Disagree. The longer the shots, the lower the margin of error and more punished for it you get. And obviously nobody can hit the ball perfectly straight every time. And it's simply just a lot easier to stick shots close to the pin with short irons compared to long irons. It would definitely raise scores significantly.

I’ve played probably once a year that last 20 years since High school. Recently picked up the clubs and started playing more... I’m about one club shorter and just accepted that. Really appreciate women golfers grace and skill around the course.

There's a video I like from a top PGA player from the 90's. He goes thru his bag on the range wedges to driver. What is so remarkable is the tempo. Every shot is the same. You can't tell from his tempo whether he has a wedge or a driver. This is how Bo is playing too. It takes trust in your yardages for each club and your ability to strike the ball well. I have always hit my longer shots harder and I struggle with my tempo (and ball striking) with longer shots. I'm slowly figuring it out. Golfer of 50 years.

Very good point about handicap index. It’s your potential, not your average. The “differential average” is...your average. And the anti-handicap is how well you play on your worst day. For example, I’m playing off a 12.5 index right now, my differential is 16, and my anti is 22. Meaning I’m extremely inconsistent..as most amateur players are.
@GolfSidekick3 жыл бұрын
Exactly playa. Most idiots who point out other people's handicaps not being "real" have no understanding of golf or the handicap system. Teeing handicap for that course, they don't get that a 4.4 index would be an 8 handicap from the back tees of this course I play. So if I shoot an 80, that's 4.4 index golf. Most people see one person's round, or a few shots, or someone making a video where they are rushing, filming three people's shots and blurt out their ignorance for th world to see. The most hilarious is that people would point out people's handicaps are lower than they think they should be....but don't have the awareness to understand that if they themselves are an "honest" 15 handicap, that to play to their 15 handicap, they would usually shoot around 90-92. If they had to watch someone who states a 15 handicap shoot a 92, they would say the 15 handicap is lying and should be a 20 handicap. There's no fixing stupid.

I played one of my pupils who was a scratch junior international and I don't play a lot but can play under par to 10 over depending on how much I have played. We played off the same tees and although I outdrive her and took 2-3 club less than here, she was very accurate and her short game and long irons put me to shame. I once played pretty well but required birdies or better to win a hole as she was very consistent. 300-400 yard holes for her were easy - while I would hit over 300 drives, not necessarily on target my [itching wedge was all over the place. I got a 60 degree and that helped my game as I was hit Pw from 140 to 50 range and it was all inconsistent. When I played well I last by maybe two holes but otherwise I was losing by 8. Consistency was the key and working on my short game would take 5-20 shpts off my game. I used to pitch and put at my home when iw as young so I usually could pitch like a pro - but you have to hit a lot of balls to be consistent

Way back in high school I competed against a girl who later played on the LPGA. (There weren't girls' teams then). I had 80 yards on her off the tee, but she was monotonously accurate. I'm a senior golfer, low handicapper for 30 years, and I've taken a lot of money off young players, who think if they make me play the tips they will beat me. Moving back makes the course more difficult, making the lower handicap more significant, regardless of distance. As you found out! Your mistake was thinking moving back to the tips was an advantage to you. You would have had a much better chance of beating her with you both playing off the ladies tees.

All i know is I wish I could play from the ladies tees. Having wedges into greens every green is pretty great, haha. When I'm hitting a wedge in very confident I'll at least hit the green but also hit it close enough I can get some good birdie looks or make those lag putts much easier. When I'm hitting an 7 iron into a green though it's just a "k, just get this shit on the green" Then if it's a 5 iron my confidence is of hitting the green is about the same as sticking a wedge to less than 15 feet. But I'm just a casual golfer. Played on high school golf team but that was 13-16 years ago. Now I probably only golf about a total of 72 holes per year. Basically a pro golfer in one tournament over 4 days plays as much as me, haha. I hit a buckets of balls like once a month for about 5 months. Without that only playing 72 holes per year I'd probably be horrible. But yeah to sum it up, those long irons make things quite a bit more difficult

one thing I quickly learned...everytime I tried to "smash" a shot, it went very wrong. Keep the same smooth, controlled stroke and your game gets more consistent.

That's 100% so I changed this driver. I felt like I needed to smash it all the time. Just completely too advnced for me as a Tour issue model

Bo's rhythm on almost every shot felt v consistent. Baus seems to be quicker or slower at times.
