you are the king of bike maintenance videos, all the jobs that you do I am confident to attack after watching your videos. A lot of other tutorials skip parts and don't talk about the details at all.

Great video! My friend blew the seal out of his shock the first day on vacation. No local shop was able to repair it for at least a week. We bought a kit, followed your instructions, and the shock was back to normal for the next day's ride. Double thumbs up!

Some tips on the new type DPS shock with an air chamber in the cap. Mine is 0.8 cubic inches in size and totally obscures any view of the O ring in the cap. You must take an "L" shaped metal tool of some kind and jerk the plastic air chamber down the shaft It can be removed from the shaft since it has a gap in it and you can put in a different sized air chamber, but I don't know why.. Then you can see and remove the O ring at the very top of cap of the shock. The air chamber has a small plastic washer that goes below it so you snap the air chamber on the shaft above the plastic washer. Boy Howdy, things have changed since I last did this on my older bike!

Thanks for this! This helped me, mostly as a sanity check to make sure I wasn't doing anything stupid and it really is just an exercise in patience to get those rings into the can. Couple things that I learned, and which I hope will help others: Don't use wooden tools. The tips will splinter, leaving tiny wood fragments that are hard to get rid of. I wasn't paying attention for one second, and one of the backup rings popped into the groove for the dust wiper. It was a royal pain in the ass to remove non-destructively. After that, I put one of the old ones in there to prevent it from happening again. If you have a cat... budget three times what it would take otherwise. I don't know if I removed dozens of cat hairs or the same hair dozens of times, but it was not helping the process.

Great video. On the canister seals, I had a little epiphany doing my last service: when you make the seals and backup ring into a taco shape, make the taco upside down. Waaaayyy easier to get them into that groove. But that inner shaft on mine was getting badly worn, so now I’m shopping for a new shock. 😞

I have a memory it's easier on the canister to put the upper plastic ring in first, then the rubber ring and finally the lower plastic ring. Why did you put in the rubber ring first?

Hey. I just service mine, twice, because air leak. I think from propedal knob. No oil, bottom part work ok, only air lost. Especially in cold weather. After service, no leak. In the morning on first use i can hear air leak.

J have some Nylon picks that work very well. They will not scratch any of the metallic parts of the shock. They are available on Amazon.

In many videos on shock seal replacement, I've seen the suggestion to put a rag through the rear eyelet to keep it from doing something about blowing off, but it never made sense to me. There is no air in the shock and if there was, how would this rag through the eyelet help? It's always been a puzzlement to me. Can you clarify? Thanks.

Hi Clint, I damaged my air/Schrader valve on my 2024 Fox Float. Fox says I have to replace the whole eyelet assembly $160 plus $160 for labor, ouch! Thats like a whole new shock. How hard is it to replace the eyelet?

Also, I tried nylon picks and they were not sharp enough or strong enough and they just bend. You will need a metal pick, just be very very careful as Clint says.

Thanks for the video Clint, I just replace the whole kit, but what happens is that when I reassemble the shock it makes a squishing sound when I’m ridding. Not sure if I did something wrong. Any advice?

As long as you’re sure the seals and back up rings are in straight, I would just ride it for a few times and see if it goes away. There’s a chance there could just be a little bit of excess fluid. I assume it’s holding air?

Clint can i ask you a quick question? what would cause a large clunk sound to come from the rear of my bike periodically. Brand new ultegra bottom bracket. Derailleur, chain and cassette very clean and tuned to perfection. I though i knew most things about racing bikes but i cannot figure this out. Drive train is shimano 105 11 speed cassette.
@ClintGibbs
@ClintGibbs 2 жыл бұрын
A few things to check. Some are really basic but worth checking first. First, make sure your rear axle is tight but not over tightened. Make sure your cassette is on tight. Finally, if it's a full suspension bike, make sure the pivots are tightened to the proper torque specs.

The little plastic bushings on each side of my bottom eyelit (side can slides past when removing it) is too big and messes with seals when removing or reinstalling can. Any advice to remove that?
@ClintGibbs
@ClintGibbs 2 жыл бұрын
On Rockshox it has to be removed. Most Fox shocks will allow you to slide the can past, but I guess there are some situations where you have to remove it. There's a special tool to do that.

This does not apply to the X2. The X2 needs to be sent into fox for service costing $200+. I got rid of mine for that reason.
