Need to know how to change a car battery safer?
In this video I’ll go over how you can replace your car battery. Installing a new battery in your vehicle is an easy maintenance DIY that doesn’t take too much time or need many tools.
I show what I do to disconnect the car battery, remove the battery and install and reconnect a new car battery. I also give an electrical short circuit demo to help you understand which wire terminal to remove first (Positive or Negative / Red or Black) because removing the wrong cable first will make it more dangerous and could result in an electrical shock, the battery exploding, a battery fire or you getting seriously hurt.
Lastly, use a car OBD Memory saver to keep all your vehicle settings saved. Some cars have issues when the memory is lost due to power outage/battery change.
NOTE:
Car batteries contain strong acids so you have to be very careful and wear safety equipment. It's also very important to consult you owner's manual for additional steps to do when changing out the battery of your vehicle. A service manual for your make of vehicle may help best. Be informed, wear safety gear and wash up after.
Correction:
The di-electric grease should not be put on the posts of the car battery. It should be put over the terminals after connecting the cable terminals to the car battery posts. This will help prevent buildup of deposits on the terminals and not interfere with the conductivity between the car battery and cables.

Unless you have a 6 volt system from the early 50s or earlier, your car is negatively grounded. Always always always disconnect negative First. The electron said a battery always exit the battery to power the car from the negative terminal. You always take it off first. It's the same thing with aircraft.

@FrakkingCreations
@FrakkingCreations 9 ай бұрын
You're welcome. Happy the video was useful. If your vehicle is still working now, I wouldn't expect anything irreversible happened. Reconnecting the cables in reverse order mostly just makes the situation more dangerous when you were connecting the battery as shown in the demo in the video. Just make sure to disconnect and reconnect in the correct order the next time.

Thank you for the video. This seems like a simple, straight forward process, so I attempted to install a new battery in an older car. Everything went well until I got to the part where hooking up the negative terminal. When I attempted to put it on a tiny spark happened. So I waited and did it again. Same thing. I've read this is normal in today's cars and something may be on. I've yet to check that possibility and just stopped installing the rest of it. IS this normal? And can it "safely" be installed when it does this? I'm stalled from moving further. :(
@FrakkingCreations
@FrakkingCreations 3 жыл бұрын
It's normal for a small spark to happen as the car is still in the "on" setting. I like to put the negative cable on quick and make sure it doesn't lose contact with the battery terminal thereby not letting it spark again. Then tighten the terminal on. Your car systems should be on after that.

I just wanted to clean the battery connections on my car. However, the more videos I watch, the more I get convinced I shouldn't do it. It may sound being too cautious or reading too much into it, but I think there are too many things that can accidentally go wrong & cause serious harm to me or to my car. For example, a minor mistake (short circuit, connecting or disconnecting thing in wrong order, etc.). I didn't know till now that it can cause fire or even battery explosion!!! (just imagine taking a shower w/ the acid in the battery). All this is like walking on the edge of cliff, but, being careful. BTW, I found out the battery can't electrocute the person, but its connecting wires, etc, can only give a very nasty shock to the person (phew, ..... what a relief!)

How do you use a memory saver? You forgot to mention the battery saver requires a 12 volt or in your case a 9 volt battery. Then do you plug it into the cigarettes lighter socket but do you need to put and leave the key in to keep the accessory live.
@FrakkingCreations
@FrakkingCreations 3 жыл бұрын
good point. I don't like to recommend the socket memory savers because some cars don't enable them without the keys set to accessory mode, as you've mentioned. Leaving the keys on accessory mode would not work when using the 9v battery, I don't think. That's because things like the radio and anything else that turns on in accessory mode would kill the battery. That's why I would say the memory savers that plug into the OBD II port is better. And probably the ones that have a 12v adapter instead of the 9v battery. Hope this helps!

RE: Dielectric Grease. Per Google: "What is dielectric grease? Despite the fact it has "electric" right there in the name, it's a fairly common misconception that dielectric grease is capable of conducting electricity. In actual fact, dielectric grease is an insulator and doesn't conduct electricity." Dielectric grease is designed and intended to protect electrical connections from water, dirt & corrosion. Since it does not conduct electricity, it should be applied to the posts & terminals *AFTER* you make your terminal connections, *NOT* before. By adding the grease to the posts as shown, then installing the terminals, you are basically adding a layer of electric insulation between the posts & terminals. That's not good.

Thank you. Typically, the batteries can be charged in the vehicle but it's always good to check your vehicles manual and charger's manual first for any specifics that are required. Different vehicles and chargers may have different requirements. This way you can be sure you won't cause any problems.

Can it ruin the car, a short circuit? A mechanic i watched today took of the postive first, then went to negative, as he was trying to loosen the negative, i guess the positive touched the terminal post because he didnt put a towel down to separate for saftey. The headlights went on and off a few times. When he connected the new battery, again... he he did the wrong order. installed the negative first, positive last. I started the car, it started fine. But just nervous he might have fried something. I drove it for an hour

Hard to say without access to the vehicle. Sounds like it may not be a battery issue. It could be your alternator or something else. You might want to scan for check engine codes. Otherwise you will need a mechanic to take a look at it.

@FrakkingCreations

The terminals can be dirty, greasy or oxidized from manufacturing. Using the terminal cleaning tool scrapes any dirt and surface layer of metal off to allow clean contact with the cable connectors.

A battery terminal cleaning tool like the one shown in the video shouldn't be any more than $7-$8 at almost any auto parts store. Harbor Freight has them for about $3. But to answer your question. In the past what I have used to clean battery terminals & posts includes: steel wool, Scotch-Brite pads, 220 grit sandpaper, or an old toothbrush with some baking soda with enough water added to make a paste. That last one, the baking soda neutralizes any acid corrosion. Of course with any of these I wipe down the posts & terminals afterwards with a clean cloth or rag. I've also used WD-40 & a rag; works decent enough but can get messy.

@@FrakkingCreations can do. Rather than loose all current once the battery is disconnected. Hook up a second source ( I have one of those noco jump starters) say to the battery leads so the car retains a current whilst the battery is being changed. I’m thinking on modern cars with lots of computers and codes, do they need resetting if they loose power totally. I heard people say they have had some issues after a battery replacement. Thanks for your time.
@FrakkingCreations
@FrakkingCreations 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. Some people do have issues after. If you're going to try to connect the leads of the vehicles connectors to your jump starter you have to be careful not to cause a short circuit. The cables are free to flop around once removed from the battery. Plus, even before that, when you connect your jump starter to the cables of the vehicle while the battery is still connected, you will have to be very careful not to touch the cables to any metal parts of the vehicle or you could cause a short. And also, as you are removing the cables from the battery you will have to make sure the jump starter clamps do not disconnect from the vehicles cables by accident. In that scenario, you would lose power to the car computers. Better to use a OBD port connector that powers the car computers. Some jump starters have a adapter cable for this purpose.

@@FrakkingCreations thanks, I went with the leads connected and was careful, all work fine thank you again for your time. The other way I though may have worked was to use the usb power output from the noco jumper back into the cigarette lighter plug which may have supplied current to the computer. I wasn’t sure so I went the other way.

Not so sure about putting di electric greese on your post,only on the top after its clean and connected,never on the post.
@johnvigolo4972
@johnvigolo4972 11 ай бұрын
My thoughts exactly!? This process would only reduce the contact & impede the current flow. Have always cleaned the posts & terminals with that electrical cleaner spray, then wiped it clean before connecting the terminals & then applying a light coating of electrical grease only on the exterior exposed surface.

Good catch. I think I remember seeing that when reviewing the video, sometime after it was published. As long as the positive pole of the battery is not ALSO touching any part of the vehicle it won't be a big issue. But, yes, it's best that the negative cable doesn't connect with the negative pole of the battery at any time while changing the battery, and before purposely connecting the negative terminal. I have seen some people wrap the negative cable terminal with cloth so that this will not accidentally happen.

Walmart, like other retailers sell many different brands of items including their own private label items under the brand name Great Value. The batteries we have purchased from Walmart include Energizer (not shown in video) and Everlast (shown in the video). These brands are both made by Energizer Holdings, Inc. As I understand, Energizer is a brand that makes good batteries. I'm not sure why purchasing a battery from Walmart automatically guarantees them to be "useless" as you mentioned. Also, these are not the Great Value brand, either. In fact, these 2 batteries we have purchased from Walmart have lasted over 5 years now. Maybe you have had bad experiences from Walmart batteries? If so, what brand batteries did you have bad experiences with and how long did they last before they failed?
