It looks like an installation error. The oil filter looks beat up and has dent marks.

You can clearly see the filter was damaged either at installation or something maybe debris hit it while driving? but this doesnt look to be the filters fault

I used the same Fram Tough Guard of filter on my 2006 Trailblazer and it leaked. The leak was small, probably 4 quarts over 5k miles. Still it made a mess and I paid the shop $105 to investigate and do an oil a filter change. The first thing that they asked me was what tool I used to install the filter. I did it by hand. It is tough to get tools up in there and as tight as I can manage by hand has always been enough. The mechanic thought that perhaps it was over-tightened. At 53 with arthritis in my left shoulder I guaranty that it wasn't installed too tight. That was probably the last Fram filter that I ever buy. The mechanic said that mine was leaking from a seam. Your looks like it was either damaged at installation or it was rubbing up against something. Hand tight is all that these filters need.

I knew an old FORD guy that drove Fords in the 50s, 60s, 70, and 80s. He was a PEng and said don't use anything but a FORD OIL FILTER ON A FORD ENGINE!

I had same issue and mailed ultra filter back to Fram. They tested and claimed install error. So long Fram!

I usually put my oil channel locks to the filter only to give a half turn TOPS MORE after hand tightening it. Thank God my oil leak occurred, it appears very shortly before I did my NEXT change. I know it had to be a VERY short time before because the TEMP GUAGE never went up and the OIL LIGHT never came on. It looked as if it eminated from the filter. I DIDN'T 'WRENCH' this filter fown like a madman. Are you telling me these FRAMS housings apparently are so friggin' cheaply made???

I have not seen a problem like this with Fram filters till now. I have used them for 20 years with no issue. Hopefully this was an installer error but after market parts have become cheaply made today. /K&K
