What the hell are we talking about here? Even if it was a penalty, there's no way France should be awarded one considering 2 major mistakes lead to the first goal. Griezman's dive that lead to the freekick PLUS Pogba was offside during the freekick even though it was an own goal. Even though Pogba didn't touch the ball, he DID actively go at the ball and barely missed it. Certainly not passive offside.

Yeah it was a dive but ultimately the referees make these kinds of mistakes sometimes. The free kick was still quite far away (far enough not to directly shoot at the goal). Obviously Mandzukic mistimed the header so I'd say it's still 80% Croatias fault. The penalty was 100% penalty imo. Don't think it was deliberate or anything, just unlucky. Would be really unfair to France not to give it.

You say you expect more from France in terms of running and dominating the midfield. But they don't really have the players to do that. The way they play now suits especially Pogba very well but also Matuidi and Kante. It plays to Pogba's strengths as he can keep his game vertical instead of horizontal. That means fewer touches, more direct, more efficient and fewer defensive errors as he can just sit back and concentrate on defending and closing down spaces when France don't have the ball. Opposition players don't run around corners with him as much as there isn't any space. France should definitely continue playing this way. It may not be the most spectacular tiki taka football but they it can win them a lot of trophies.

Agree about the Griezmann dive. As for the penalty, what exactly constitutes a handball penalty? If it’s deliberate? Surely it can’t always be based on that alone. The fact is that Perisic’s hand is in a unnatural position away from his body (why defenders sometime keep their arms behind them), blocking the ball from going into the box where it may or may not have reached a French player. That sounds like a penalty to me, but again I’m not familiar with the exact ruling. Croatia certainly played a more entertaining and direct style of football, but France kept their nerve and took their chances well. Considering the run France had to get to the final (Argentina, Uruguay and Belgium), they ultimately deserved it, regardless of that Griezmann dive (which was absolutely pathetic).

Francesco Grieco again, whether it was intentional or not it interfered with play. It’s not like the one Iran got against Portugal, where the ball would have gone out of play regardless. There were French players behind Perisic that were in positions to reach the ball had it not hit his hand. Also, not being allowed to use your hand to make contact with the ball is a fundamental part of the game; it’s not like it’s particularly hard to hold your hands behind your back, albeit Perisic is not a natural defender.

There such a term as Tactical foul where during a quick attack a player is fouled in the two 25 meter areas in midfield. A great example of this was Argentina vs Hungary where the Argentinians continued to foul Nyialsi and Törőcsik who were continually fouled. This is what the very clever French manager did and as always the referee suffers the HeadUpHisArseitis.This killed any chance of Croatia to hit France on the break and find space. Totally agree that Croatia will feel an injustice over the first two goals but it's the referee's interpretation that's the problem not Var. It's only there to give him the benefit of another look. Some people have this misconception that he has to change his mind after looking at it. He doesn't. He succumbed under the pressure of the French players & being told in his earpiece to look at it again. Everything looks much worse in retrospect when watched in slow mo. It distorts people's view on an incident. He should've stuck with his initial decision after seeing the replay through common sense. Perisic had his arm down in a natural position, there was no obvious intent to handle & he had no time to react as the ball travelled about a yard after the flick on. +Francesco Grieco this is what the governing body needs to iron out with them. A lot of these referees make their decisions after seeing a Var replay based on a slow motion replay. But this totally blows all context out of proportion because the actual incidents happened at match speed, which is extremely quick. A slow motion replay only seems to look convincing to them that they've made a clear & obvious error because seeing it happen at a reduced speed makes it look definitive that a stonewall infringement has taken place. I don't understand how people in such high responsibility jobs can employ referees who are easily manipulated by watching a slowed down replay of an incident that happened at a quick pace. Perhaps Fifa were premature to trust so many referees unfamiliar with the system to use it correctly.

The Penalty was correct on two counts .... Firstly the law states hand to ball .. penalty .... ball to hand no penalty ... Secondly the players were warned by FIFA before the competition started ... hands to body, no penalty, hand flailing penalty .... As the ball comes across it comes off a French attacker and falls towards a Croation defender, his arms are away from the body and his arm (hand) moves towards the ball as it falls towards him. The referee gave no penalty but on the protest of the French used VAR. He went to the video and had a good look at it ... in my opinion he got his decision spot on .... Arms out from the body and hand moving towards the ball is always a penalty .... a little unlucky for the Croatians but a correct decision from the referee ... The first goal though was a joke, clear dive from Griezmann, and the free kick led to a goal ... that was a clear Fek-up by the ref. Take those two goals out of it and the total fluke Mandzukic scored the French would still have won 2 - 1 so no idea why you say "Robbery"

Even tho I personally think that the referee made the wrong decision at 1:0 and at that penalty, I also think it's wrong to take away from the France that victory. There's no such thing as unintentional in the rules of football. Movement of the hand to the ball, no deflection from the French player, hand sticking out like 50 cm --> clear penalty.

I don't agree. France weren't bad in any way, and Croatia wasn't that much better. France had more shots and their defence was great. I see how the penalty shouldn't have been, but I dont see why I couldn't have been. The arm is moved towards the ball, not the other way around. Also a lot of former top refs say it's correct, so I don't understand why you say the decision is outright wrong. Griezmann's free kick was thin, but there was contact, and therefore a free kick can be given. If he hadn't moved his legs the contact would have occurred anyway. Also Croatia didn't really create that many threating chances. Perisic's goal was class, but their second goal could just as well have put down as a Lloris own goal because of how much of a fuck up it was. I think France deserved to win the whole thing. They've had a great tournament and grew into well. Croatia did exceptionally well also, and surprised a lot the world, but to say that they where cheated from the title is a bit of a stretch. But hey, that's just another neutral's opinion 😄

They gave penalty for less or something similar more than once earlier in the World Cup so if that's their interpretation of the rules then it's a penalty they stuck with it. It was less of a penalty on Cedric Soares Portugal vs Iran which meant Portugal got the tougher route.
