Ramming mud into it several hundred miles an hour does get grit into the system I guess.... dust covers or not. Choosing .303 rather than your own service cartridge is very French, given their odd weapon procurement practice history and character.

@@davidbrennan660 The .303 made sense. That was the cartridge of effective and available aircraft machineguns during the war when France needed them. And after the war, why not stick with what you have? Especially since you know the plan is to replace the 8mm Lebel as soon as practical anyway. Moving to the 8mm Lebel post-war would have just meant changing things again when moving to the 7.5mm French in the 1930s.

French aviation of the inter-war years is fascinating, with their aircraft designs ranging from sleek Cadillacs of the sky to flying barn doors meant to "torture the air instead of flying through it." The quirkiness also extended to their arms, as this video shows. One of my favorite traits is arming some of their aircraft with a huge Hispano-Suiza cannon in the back, like the LeO 45 series.
@AshleyPomeroy
@AshleyPomeroy 3 жыл бұрын
That is a good, compact description of 1930s French military aircraft, especially the bombers. And yet they tended to have decent armament - they got the 20mm Hispano working in fighters before anybody else.
@liger7275

War Thunder player, eh? Yes indeed most inter-war military stuff, not just French, is whacky af because it's built in a period of peace with plenty of resources and not a lot of efficiency in mind + tactics that weren't even tested yet. A large scale war set anywhere between 1925 - 1935 would have been extremely interesting to say the least as we would get to learn about bizarre vehicles and armaments in action.

In French service, you found the Darne mostly on the navy side (Loire 210, Latécoère 298, Laté 631, Loire 130, most pre-war French flying boats and floatplanes in fact, including the Vindicators which flew under French colors), and it equiped all the French motor torpedo boats prototypes (VTB 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 23 and 24), which were created shortly before WW2, in which case they were installed as dual mount turrets.

My headcanon is that the designers built it as a heavy infantry support weapon with a nice solid mount, laughed amongst themselves when asked to convert it to aerial use but did it anyway, then had to pretend that they fully expected it to work just fine. This seem to be a turret-mounted version. As far, as I understood, it does not have any synchronization gear, so it is not a cowl mounted gun, it also does not have provision for remote recharging (either pneumatic, or wire operated) - it has a normal charging handle instead. So, this is not a wing mounted version either. Quite possible, it was installed in a 2-gun turret mount, so the trigger was operated remotely on both guns by wire, or set of levers, connected to a common finger trigger. The thing with nuts, attached on top to the remote trigger assembly is, most probably, a "spider-net" sight mount, typical for 1930-s and early 1940-s aircraft turret guns.

I can't believe you managed to get your hands on a Darne MG. They were widely used first on Armée de l'Air machines at both fuselage and wing mounts and then on export aircraft along the french - patterned Vickers and Lewis. Problem was they were very expensive to make, thus opening the way to the well-known - and more affordable - MAC 1934 firecrackers. Last thing I've read on the Darne is about them being used as turret guns for the jugoslav Bristol Blenheims during the April War and later on on the T.O. rings of Potez and Breguet of the Croatian Air Force. What a great video.

Hi Ian. I believe I have a darne School kids rifle from 1882. It has two very intricate barrell bands and forest carving on stock. It takes a large cartridge! Its precision built. Been told its very rare! It went into posh French schools. Twelve and up! Do you know of this?

I love the machining marks on the internals, really brings it into reality for me. There's a British term that I think the feed system exemplifies, bodging, where you don't fix any underlying problem, you just do the minimum to stop it from breaking.

As I recall, the comment at the time was that since the service life of an aircraft was short anyway, it wasn't worth spending a lot of money on weapons to arm them with.

The over engineered feed system is clever and ideal for use in aircraft. They recognised the problems that infantry machine guns had in WW1 in aerial contexts were largely to do with feed systems causing jams. In an aircraft you can sacrifice compactness for reliability so an elaborate system to present the cartridge to the chamber is sustainable. Unfortunately fir Darne guns like the Browning aircraft machine gun in .303 do everything so much better, I guess they were just five years too late.

Today, Ian will show us a Darne machine gun. First, he will start with a little history of the Darne gun and the Darne company that made it. Next, he will give a closer look at the Darne gun and disassemble it. After a look at the Darne markings he will describe how the Darne Complicated™ feed system works. Disassembly of the Darne machine gun is started by pressing a tab which compresses the Darne recoil spring, allowing the Darne back plate to be removed. Once this is done the Darne bolt and gas piston can be removed. The Darne Complicated™ feed tray was a little too much for Ian, so he will not be removing it from the Darne machine gun in this video. Ian then finishes up the video by stating that only 11,000 of the Darne machine guns were built. The timing of the Darne gun just wasn't right.

I suspect the "G" beyond the serial number indicate a left feed gun. In a wing mounted gun you want your belt to run outboard of the wing and the gun as much inboard as the propeller "disc" allows. and you could apply the same principle for cowl mounted guns for easy acces to amunition casings. As such any "D" gun is a right feed. As an universal mount gun (cowl and wings) the "Darne" design as to take into acount that. The trigger mecanism on top looks like to be set up for interupted fire but i could be wrong on that. So my guess is a left wing or left cowl gun.
