Eating and drinking in the hoof is a recent thing In France. Maybe ten years or so. Stuff that is bought to go is traditionally eaten sitting down, in the office or at home.

My understanding is that the bill includes 'tipping,' (as you've stated), however, if you, the patron, would like to leave something more, it is considered a nice thing to do particularly if you're happy with service, food, etc.

It’s so great that France is not being hit with that awful hyper inflation for food like we have here. Prices looked pretty good to me. And yah now I’m hungry after watching this video!! Thanks guys!!

Excuse me. Do you shop in French supermarkets or marchés. Do you live in France. We do daily and this for the last 47 years. Food inflation in France was out of control with many price increases for basic necessities between 25- 50% increase in 2023. A trip to the market showing several products is not an indicator of prices that people pay daily for food. The prices you see in the marché are certainly 20% more expensive than before the Covid crisis. Salaries are so low that even a few centimes in increase across the board creates problems for a large part of the population. Average French median annual net salary 25 200€ before taxes. It's a big debate here "En 2021, selon l'Insee, le salaire médian est de 2 100 euros nets par mois en équivalent temps plein. Le salaire médian est ainsi inférieur de 20% au salaire moyen." That means in short that the median monthly full time salary is 2100€ and 25 200€/year. Also a lot of the food you find in France in supermarkets and marchés is imported from lower cost production countries. That's what the recent French farmers demonstrations and blockages were about. If you buy only French sourced products you add at least 25% to your monthly food bill. People please! France has its good points and not so good points like any country. The only good thing at 100% in Europe unlike the USA is that you will never go bankrupt from medical bills but it is only free for very low income families. Believe me I pay. Less than I would in the USA but I pay.

Ah ! Tipping is a recurring question for visitors in France. So, dear Kj and dear Tony, you are right : service is included in the price. But (there is always a "but", as we say in France)… Tipping is nonetheless expected by the waiters 😁 Generally, it is between 5% and 10% of the bill. If your coffee is 2€, you leave 10 or 20 cents. In a restaurant, if the bill is 50€, you leave 3€ or 5€, etc… Don't worry : waiters won't bear you a grudge if you don't leave tips, because they know that visitors are a bit lost with the tip thing 😉 Anyway, have a good stay in Geneva. I hope the rain won't follow you !!! (p.s : if it still exists, there is a very famous restaurant for "Fondue" in Geneva, called "Les Armures")

My French nephews told me they could buy beer in the shops when they were 13-14 years old because most French people don’t consider beer as “real” alcohol. No, it’s not legal, but no one cared about the law, except for harder alcohol, and bars. I saw the drunken pictures of them, under 18. Luckily, they followed their American auntie’s advice, and removed the pictures from social media. 🤦🏾‍♀️ 😅 In French standards, I wasn’t impressed by Lyon. Especially since I’d been in Paris, Nancy, and Dijon for 2 weeks at that time.

I don't mind tipping for good service but generally I prefer if everything is included in the bill so I know exactly how much to pay. In the US, I'm always a bit disappointed when I realize my total bill is so much more (when tax and tip are added on). It's the same feeling I get when renting a car or booking a flight...by the time all those service charges are tacked on, I feel I've spent too much.

Sorry to hear you didn't have pleasant weather during your visit to Lyon. Winter (Jan/Feb) does tend to be cold and rainy. I usually go in December for the Festival of Lights and in June before the summer rush. I suspect the weather is best in spring and autumn there. Did you buy anything at the shops?

You spoke about wine in schools in the past. Here's another fact about France that will blow your mind "The law of 21 April 2021 sets an age of 15 years below which there can be no consent with an adult as long as the age difference exceeds 5 years. This age increases to 18 years in cases of incest."

I ask this in kindness: What are you doing to really learn French? I’ve been married to a French guy 4ever & I’ve upped my study of French for an anticipated retirement there. I speak decent French anyway, because I took it in school from 4th grade forward & my 🇫🇷MIL didn’t speak English, but having been there many dozens of times, I don’t see how one can live there happily, without speaking well. There are tons of resources on YT to learn, from how to order a coffee: Bonjour, je voudrais un café au lait, s’il vous plaît, tohu-bohu to pronounce French words. In the US, I recommend the Alliance Française. Reverso is, to me, the best online dictionary. You just have to force yourself to communicate only in French. You’ll make many mistakes (I do) but it gets easier. Bonne chance!

It is difficult to adjust to cold weather when you have been in Florida for years. Same here….we left New England over 20 years ago and have lived in Naples, Florida. We were in Europa for 6 weeks summer of 2023 and more days then not we were cold or freezing. Most of our time was in Germany in July…..but we were also in Switzerland, France and Austria.

If you start tipping in restaurants, you could create a tipping expectation. This could lead to wages not increasing to current living costs each year. Please don’t tip in Europe they all have a tax included into the cost of the goods and services.
