I visited Lyon in 2018 for a week un May. Loved it! As a french Canadian their reaction to my accent always makes me smile. The food is amazing I still think about it!

I have visited Paris several times and have heard more than once that Lyon is better (smaller and packed with all the things you say). If I'm fortunate to get back to France, Lyon will be a must. Thanks for this video!

Also, consider Bordeaux. Pretty similar to Lyon in term of size and general feel, but with that extra oceanic feature if you like it.

❤ Lyon. I first visited Lyon for a half day as part of a Rhône river cruise in 2015. Immediately knew I would return, and I have. My return trips have included a one week gastronomy program with Road Scholar and two weeks taking half day language classes while lodging with a local family. I was last there in 2022 and stayed in an AirBnB in a traboule building! I guess I like the city so much because it reminds me of Paris, when I lived there in the early 1970s - history, river(s), and walkability, but not crowded with tourists.

I am looking for a place to call home in France. Moving away from the US within a year and a half. Do not want to be around tourist areas. Paris seems too expensive and the rush lifestyle is not for me anymore. I love the fact that there is a gorgeous countryside as well.

Amazing info Jay. You' ve been missed! Made my first trip to Paris in late May. Loved it but as I found the more touristic areas packed already, I can't imagine being there during the games ( to each his own). I wish the city and the games much success and safety and I am looking forward to watching the games in air-conditioned comfort at home!

Great video, and this is someone who has always lived in Lyon telling you this. Add the Cinema and Miniature Museum (@ St Jean District), the Croix-Rousse district (= the soul of Lyon ❤), the park Tête d'Or, maybe also l'Île Barbe and you have the perfect itinerary.

I think you can spend one day or two day in Lyon, it just 2 hours from Paris by train, and 2 hours from Alpes by car, 1.5 hours from Marseille (Méditérannée See) by train.

The brother Lumières didn't just invent "one of the first camera", they literally invented cinema as we know it with the projection system etc., there's a street in Lyon called "First film street" because it's where the first cinematographic film was ever shot. Anyway sorry I needed to add that fact because I've worked in film and I'm from Lyon haha, but it's lovely to watch a video on this city from the point of view of a foreigner.

As with some of the other commentors here, Lyon is my favorite French city. Been there as a tourist multiple times. The food is amazing! Something interesting to do: As you walk through the middle city, look at the doors of the homes, offices and other locations. The designs can be quite interesting. While most travel vlogs discuss public transportation, I virtually never use it within a city. If you walk, you see places/things that you would never see hurtling through an underground tunnel. In Lyon, with the exception of Tete d'Or, one should be able to walk most anywhere within a reasonable period of time.

Very nice video but some confusion between the cathedral and the basilica. On top of the hill, built to thank Mary for saving Lyon from the plague, is the basilica. A much more recent building than the Cathedral Saint John which is at the bottom of the same hill built in the 12th century.

As a French Lyonnais i approuve his advice of trying to speak French We do are proud of our Language and if you give it an effort and a try to speak even just a few world we will be gratefull and most of the time we will help you in English if necessary to make you comfortable It's all in the first impression, French are very polite and it's a real rule to always great people before asking for something, otherway is considered rude here Just say "Bonjour/Hello" first of all then " Excusez moi, Excuse me/Pardon me" "Merci/Thank you" etc If i encounter anyone who want to visit Lyon, i would be very glad to help you discover this beautifull city, i wish for a great experience for you I also advice to visit Parc de la Tete d'Or (Golden Head Park) whitch is a big nature parc in the city, we have a decent zoo entirely free, lots and lots of space to eat on the grass, play, read, there is also a flowers garden, it's great to relax a bit if you got time (but beware of allergies, it's full of pollen in Spring)

my wife and i are coming from USA august 18-21 or so. any advice? where to stay? what to eat?
@fox_trot021422 күн бұрын
@flyingmicrotonalbanana-k2i That's nice, I'll try my best to help you About advices, in Lyon you have a big public transportation network (name TCL), depends of how you plan to move in the city you can by a 24h ticket, a 48h or even a 72h (2 48h tickets each should do the trick) I must warn you that some locations are a bit "dangerous" (pickpockets tourist trap and all) you should not stop at those stations ( Charpennes and Saxe Gambetta to Guillotière for the worst) About what to do I think you have already a lot of information in videos like this, museums, parcs and all I suggest first day you visit Confluence district with the museum and the newer buildings, maybe take a boat on the river Second day, you have the whole day to visit "Old Lyon District" and Fourvière, it's a bit physical to climb the hill but you will have a LOT of bars and restaurants on the way to have a good pause Third day you can rest yourself at "Parc de la tête d'Or", visit the free zoo or the flowers garden, you can also find some good littles parcs in the city almost anywhere And last day you can visit the "Presque Ile" with all the plazas (witch you may already have crossed since they are center points of the transportation network) About where to stay, I don't know well this part but try to find an hotel in your budget next to the center (could be expensive sorry) I don't think AirBnB is a great idea in Lyon, much better in countryside
@fox_trot021422 күн бұрын
@flyingmicrotonalbanana-k2i About what to eat I can suggest you "Le Mercière" (56 road Mercière, Presque Ile) nice one not too expensive Try to go for little Restaurants more than 4 stars The food is good and you'll have plenty more in your plate If you drink alcohol you'll find a lot of pub (sound like London here x) because youngs drink more beer than wine, but there will almost always be some wine on the menu as well Here some good food to try Cervelle de Canut (cheese), Quenelle (fish ones,meat ones or even sea food ones), Saucisson Brioché, Bugnes and Tarte Praline for the classic ones Try some Andouillettes, it's tripe sausage (personally I don't like it) or Boudin blanc (I rather like this one), it's white meat cooked in milk and spices If you don't want to eat at restaurants all trip, find a market place (I don't know the date sorry) to buy some local groceries to eat, you can make a simple but great sandwich just with a good cheese and charcuterie in a baguette Hope all a this helped, feel free to ask for more specific if needed

Born there, I'm considered "une lyonnaise" and I can only recommand my beautifull city!! You have to taste the praluline (my favorite pastry) and don't be afraid of the food you find in a "bouchon" as it is very rustic but delicious. I do have to warn you : do not compare Lyon to Paris in front of a "lyonnais". It is considered rude as only parisians enjoy living in Paris.

I'm tentatively planning a trip to France. I'm very allergic to wheat and gluten. Would that be an absurd notion there? I'm aware they lovely have better wheat. But in case my body still rejects it, are there still things you can order that just are the cheese and meet?

Yes you will be able to avoid gluten, but worth trying their bread as they have very different legal restrictions on growing vegetables than the USA and tend to have a lot less allergens.
