Her sixth book chronicles the social and political roles of Evangelicals in America. Now constituting twenty-five percent of the American population, Evangelicals have helped shape the country since the Puritans, though they became a dominant force only with the Great Awakenings of the nineteenth century. A populist rebellion centered in revivals, the movement split along North-South lines with the Civil War, then into modernist-fundamentalist factions. Preachers like Billy Graham worked to unite the groups, but the turbulent 1960s divided them further.

Very important lecture, but I 'd like to notice with emphasis that Lutherans (LCMS comprised are NOT ''evangelicals''. They stand absolutely opposite to them. The are evangelical with the true meaning of the greek word (of the gospel) and not part of the american protestantism called ''evangelicalism''.

Janet... Yes. Her delivery is rather slow and choppy. I imagine due to her old age. I know this from experience. I changed the speed in Settings to 3/4 speed which made it worse. Playing this at an increase in speed did help move it along.

One thing you have to give Trump is his inherent affinity with the reliable and pliable ignorance of the poor white working classes who have become radicalized over generations on a steady diet of authority, entitlement, and judgement. @@jordantsak7683 The Lutheran Church is too anti-Semitic for my liking. Lutheranism is just another stodgy branch of Protestantism that has not had a new revelation in 5 centuries. The latest thing to catch my interest is the Seventh Day Adventist and the writing of their seer Ellen G White. For the most part, the Adventist is equally as boring as the Lutheran or Methodist Church until they start going into the topic of the millennial reign or the Kingdom of God and then things get intriguing. No matter which denomination I pick and choose what to believe and what to take with a grain of salt.

The present sorry state of evangelicalism obscures the noble beginnings of the movement. Originally a movement within the Anglican Church among those who desired a fervent and biblically-based personal connection with God, the Evangelicals became an early foreign missions effort in European churches. They volunteered in large numbers to take the Gospel of Jesus Christ to Africa, and died in large numbers from diseases they had no resistance to. But their dedicated efforts were the seed of the growing population of Christians in Africa, who now number about half of those who identify as religious on that continent.

The abortion thing sucks, but desperate women have been finding ways to do it for centuries-back-alley abortions, using hangers, throwing themselves down the stairs, drinking poison. Outlawing abortion won’t stop it, but it will cost young women their lives through septic shock from back-alley procedures, or result in invalid babies being born. So I look at this from a harm-reduction perspective. And since one in every four wanted pregnancies ends in miscarriage, doesn’t that make God the biggest baby-killer of all? I think we should focus more on pregnancy prevention, by educating our children and teaching safe sex. Just saying “no!” To hormonal teenagers won’t stop them. Many of them will still engage in sexual behavior. That’s simply human nature, it’s biologically hardwired in us via evolution. And we need to revamp our adoption and foster care systems. Every day you hear about children murdered, abused, tortured by foster and adoptive parents. The system is flawed. I personally wouldn’t even trust my cat into a foster care system. Making abortion illegal is t going to magically fix the larger problem. It’s like trying to chop down one specific tree when there’s actually a whole forest, and there’s a river nearby that’s easier to take.

Mormonism can’t be a “fourth Abrahamic religion” because there have been, and still are more than four Abrahamic religions. There night be a fine, denominational distinction between Jews and Karaites , but certainly Jews consider themselves as distinct from Samaritans as Samaritans consider themselves from Jews, yet both are explicitly Abrahamic. Mandeans are also Abrahamic in faith. History records Sabellians, Sabeans, Nabateans and others who were all Abrahamic in faith.

She didn't dissemble, she's the one who brought up that her father worked for the CIA. The question was more misleading by not mentioning that her work for the Paris organization with CIA ties was when she was 22 and without her knowledge of the CIA ties. I do wish she gave a fuller expression of what she thinks of the CIA. Her Vietnam and Reagan books, two of my favorites, are critical of both. If she's a CIA front then the CIA must have been secretly critical of the Johnson, Nixon, and Reagan administrations' foreign policy and trying to undermine them. That's not the usual criticism of the CIA, that they act as the president's secret branch of the military.
