I have been playing the piano and the guitar for a couple of years now. I really wanted to play the violin next but I realized it's hard to know where every note is. It felt like walking without legs. Swimming without arms... and well... flying without wings. This video is excellent. Next step would be the vibrato. Good luck with that.

Frank, I have watched your content for years now, on and off, and I have also been a musician, specifically playing the guitar for 15+, and while I am proud of what I have accomplished, I feel this pales in comparison to playing the violin. I earnestly want to play at a point in my life, but I hope I did not waste my formative years learning, perceivably, an "inferior" instrument. I am slow with reading music, I imagine I could with practice, but prefer to make my own. I would love to hear anything you wrote specifically that is your own composition. Thank you for everything.

the difference is the spacing. however, during a piece when you shift around, there is no set fingerings so each time it's like a reset.

Frank You are amazing! You pushed what we call "limits of the human body and mind" way farther! I do disagree with some things that say and do(like the bbc crap) but that won't stop me from appreciating how great you are man. There are things that you talk/think about and share with us that are beyond a bachelor or masters degree of many other people and for you it might just be your normal talk or thinking. there's no room for trial and error during the concert. Even if you move your fingers around during practice to get it in tune during "trial and error", you are still looking for the notes in the mind since you are not "LOOKING" at the fingerboard and frets. "Feeling" where the notes are with your finger on the board is still a purely mental act. The mind decides how far the fingers should be apart, etc.

yap. certain patterns of neural connectivity in the brain we call it "musical talent", others "artistic", still others " intelligence", etc. When you reduce it down to neurons, it's all pretty homogenous. Faster connection/stronger connection = better.

Classical music is not just about complexity. It's is about feeling through complexity and complexity through feeling. The "feelings" invoked in classical music is as complex as emotions can go.

Good video, more like this! Going for the piano myself but always wanted to try the violin, maybe when I go into the woods and live only on worms and birds I catch, I can start on the violin..with guitar you can even cheat by doing an easy tuning. On a more serious note I feel the violin can really evoke feeling when played live.

strings are harder in general, i think One of my teacher's husband and daughter were wind players and she said that they just don't need to practice as much as strings. But cello is bigger so you don't need to be as precise but it's still difficult since there are no lines on the cello fingerboard either. To be a virtuoso in every instrument is hard. Some people do find piano or cello harder than the violin but in general, violin is still the hardest for most people.

you might learn it faster than non - musicians but take Sibelius for example, the great composer from Finland. He started violin at 15 and it was his aspiration to be a great virtuoso, but he never made it and had to admitted that he started it too late. He had enough "musical talent" in him to be a great composer, but it was still too late for him to learn. It's like asking if you are a great athletic already, whether it would be too late to start gymnastic at 16....the answer might be yes.

It might be semantics, but the ability to configure large amounts of your neurons and form billions more couplings in a day than the person beside you can, in a particular context, within the middle third of any large sample, indicates we DO have natural abilities and they DO play a significant part in learning. A huge part.

For the sake of the argument, just because a piece of music has many notes it does not mean it can't have emotion. Perhaps the complex emotions of turmoil or even happiness can only be expressed with a string of notes? On the other hand, I can surely play a long note without feelings at all. And certainly there are many instances where a classical composer writes one prolonged note to evoke certain emotions.

There is such a thing as talent, known as aptitude, in the form of how your brain forms certain neural connections faster or slower than others compared to other individuals for some key subjects. Learning and abilities are largely a matter of neural connections, even many things perceived as physical actually often feature stronger neurological and nervous system factors than they do pure muscle development, let alone dexterity and coordination.

THanks for the general insight on the violin. Also good to put in perspective that people can pick up certain instruments but talent gives them potential to be in an elite class that distinguishes themselves such a virtuoso. For me, musical instruments are therapeutic and my own chance to explore my personal creativity. I just leave it to the more talented fuckers to make beautiful music for me to stimulate my mind.
@frankyang
@frankyang 11 жыл бұрын
That is true. But most composers can play instruments (at least keyboard). Musical talent can overlap, i guess playing and composing require some overlap as well, but not exactly the same kind of skill

Definitely. Increase grey matter, spatial thinking skills, creativity, etc. There are studies that indicate that starting musical instrument as a child will increase IQ by as much as 10 points. And if you believe me that violin is the hardest to learn, then it would be a good idea.
@frankyang
@frankyang 11 жыл бұрын
idk, never mesaured it. IQ is important in some endeavor but not as much in others. an IQ of 130 is sufficient for almost anything actually, everything else, creativity takes over...and creativity is a lot harder to measure. A lot of psychologists believe that IQ and creativity correlate only up to 120 or so. Nobody knew Darwin, Brahms, Mozart, and Da Vinci's IQ.

Try fingerstyle guitar . The violin is mostly linear playing melodies vs piano playing two or more parts or finger style guitar where there is three parts to play and think simultaneously . The left hand fingers the chords and melody lines while in the right hand the thumb must act independently and play the bass and the index finger and middle finger play their own parts as well. Blind Blake .

@Budjha
@Budjha 11 жыл бұрын
I do agree that blues for example focuses more on "soul". But "soul" can also be found in a lot of classical pieces. The different dynamics in the piece is what it makes so good. If classical music was played at one type of velocity (this is almost impossible) it would sound robotic. This is obviously not the case with most pieces.

"scaled down really small" - that is the difficult part.And even if the guitar has a fret the violin still requires an extra motion-bow hand, which i would bet is much more difficult than what you do with your right hand on the guitar I responded to your post on my other violin video about drums too. You can get an older person to start the guitar and drum and he can be pretty good. Not so the violin.If you think violin is so easy, perhaps .you should accept my twinkle challenge.

Being someone who has studied music theory, I can say that being able to play an instrument is difficult, but the challenge lies within what you play. Classical/Finger-picking styles of guitar, Classical pieces that are extremely lively on piano, and obviously, lively pieces for the violin. Really though, playing music and composing music are two different things. I wanted to ask whether or not you were well in music theory?
