As mentioned in the podcast, my favorite part of the entire Cubitus launch was this line from Thierry Stern: “Internally. I don’t go to clients with designs and ask them for their opinion. Never. I don’t work with external designers either. We’ve done that, but it never worked.” WHILE launching a Nautilus recreation. A watch that was designed by an external designer and is arguably their most popular design in history.

Wasn’t Genta an external designer? Who designed the nautilus?

100% with Lex here. It's a nautilus bracelet, dial, and (apparently slightly less well finished) movement in a squared off nautilus case. Whatever your feelings about PP (and I think people are forgetting how mismanaged they were historically) this is not a new collection. As for Thierry Stern's comments, I think it's a spectacularly tone deaf response. This is the opposite of winning new customers over.

I agree with you. Sadly it will be a commersial success because it will be easily recognisable on the wrist and the rich posers love that. As with Nautilus, Royal Oak and Richard Mille.

For reverso not fitting, I had same issue and ended up selling the watch. It was a large size. I tried medium recently and it fit way better. Maybe next time…
@greaterbayareahero1401
@greaterbayareahero1401 Ай бұрын
It's because the strap pin is not aligned to your wrist size. You need to do a custom strap where the pin is more aligned and the strap fits better. I had the same problem where the holes had to be moved halfway up from your usual strap holes. Too bad you sold your watch for a minor problem haha!;)

When I first saw the Cubitus I thought it was probably a fake, but I also thought that this could be a good way to dial down the Nautilus hype. If they didn't release something everyone would be asking "When is the new Nautilus coming?". So they had to release something that clearly replaced the Nautilus without adding to the hype. So they released a Nautilus-esque square watch with a different design and without the Nautilus name. Not really a terrible watch, but not an exciting watch either. This watch should stay in the collection for 5-10 years, then we'll see. This way they'll have the Nautilus ready if they need it, but they'll be able to keep developing the brand as a broader company than their competitor brand AP.

Mr. Stern should heed his own advice: you never actually own a prestigious Swiss brand. You merely look after it for the next nepo baby. His father built the Patek reputation after all these years, only to be squandered by Thierry in one fell swoop. However, I’m afraid the irony is lost in the mountain of Thierry’s arrogance.

I don’t dislike this watch. I would say that it seems to be similar to the Cartier Santos or a Mido, but on the whole, a sound looking watch and I would happily wear it. One thing that sticks out is that budget manufacturers have brought out similar designs, such as Rotary, long before PP. Perhaps PP have been placed on a pedestal for far too long, eh?

Watch divinity? It does not exist. The closest to it may have been Abraham Louis Breguet, John Harrison, Thomas Mudge, George Daniels, and perhaps a Philippe Dufour. Putting Patek in that category is, well, undeserved.

Another question for the special episode: We have seen how the price and production of new watches from well established brands has increased, at the same time the demand for many of these has decreased dramatically. How donyou see the Swiss industry adjusting to this and do you think the new (and not that new) independent brands like Christipher Ward, Furlan Marri, Farer, etc., are teaching the bigger public to value watches instead of brands, therefore taking some market share that the big ones have?

Q&A question: Every time I read articles about watch auctions, I’ve always wondered about the movement maintenance and the conditions of rare vintage watches that sell at auctions for six or seven figures. By sending them to the manufacturer’s service center could risk having original parts swapped for newer ones which could negatively impact the watch value. I feel finding or trusting a third-party watchmaker with a timepiece of such high value can be really difficult as well. Could some of these watches may never get serviced (again) and becoming paperweights in the future? For example, THE Paul Newman’s Daytona, will it ever get serviced?

Question for the special episode: We have seen how multibrand watch fairs have started to multiply bringing more and more access and interest towards new brands and old brand that don't mind sharing the same space with the new ones. On the other hand, well established brands have locked in monobarnd boutiques, in an effort to leverage their exclusivity. Do you see one of these trends taking the lead in the future? Or are both going to succeed or may perish?

@cristiantrinca3140
@cristiantrinca3140 Ай бұрын
Question: "Why are lugs ignored by every brand?". You have such a small canvas when designing a watch. Thousands of hours of work put in the mechanism, the dial and even the case... but the lugs? Just a boring extension of the case every time. I want LUGS with a different color from the case. Maybe a different shape. A different brush of the lugs. Maybe a different color in the interior of the lugs and case etc... Something!

What qualities makes Patek, "Patek"? I would offer that the standards one holds themselves to is what determines their success at the highest levels. This is lazy. Period. The Cubitus could be the sound of peak Patek, the bell being run. Laziness wears aways at the bone at the core of reputation. You can only phone-in so many performances until peoples start to whisper. Well said, gents.

Oh boy… all the points raised are pertinent and I agree with them all. Sounds like a huge own goal on so many levels … one point I would add, is the presence of the case « wings » which are an inherent part of the Nautilus design, but no longer make any sense on the Cubitus…Same dial, same bracelet, same wings, same movement, but we all need to forget the Nautilus 😅 …. Oh and it’s ugly
