Back in the Day my mom sang with Freddy before he was famous and sang in beer joints. His real name was Baldemar Garza Huerta. He was a friend of the family back before my parents were married. He was cousins to my mom's 2nd cousin but no blood relationship to us. I never got a chance to meet him before he died. Whenever he'd see his cousin he'd ask about my mom.

GOSH! Blast from the past! My mom LOVED him and he was on the radio ALL the time. I loved it too. I loved watching her dance around her room singing this. Not long after, Julio Igleias came on the scene and BAM...the whole world fell in love. So, I took Spanish in school because of this two...my mom did and I do love.

I was living at South Lake Tahoe in the late 70s. My parents brought my grandparents up to see him perform at Harrah's Hotel & Casino one weekend. My grandmother just loved him. We were all at the store ( they wanted to get some food & stuff for their hotel room )....and as we were arriving in the parking lot....Freddy Fender was just coming out (....he was getting stuff for HIS room...)....and happened to be parked right next to where we were. My grandmother flipped, and he must've spent at least 10 minutes talking with her there in the parking lot. A SUPER nice dude.

The year 1975 was a great year for country songs crossing over to the Billboard pop singles chart! Along with Freddy Fender's "Before the Next Teardrop Falls" reaching the No. 1 spot at the end of May, Olivia Newton-John hit the top spot with "Have You Never Been Mellow?" in March, B.J. Thomas did so with "(Hey, Won't You Play) Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song" in April, and John Denver hit No. 1 with "Thank God I'm a Country Boy" in June and then with "I'm Sorry" in September.
