I’m from that area & am a relic hunter. Graveyards are east to find. Look for perrywinkle growing on the ground. Old graveyards were planted with that to keep the weeds down & it almost never goes away. They’d plant cedar trees as grave markers. Holly bushes were planted around grave yards too, so if you find those three things all together, your certainly in a graveyard

Rich samuel I never knew that there were so many signs of an old graveyard. I have heard of mushrooms on top of a shallow grave from television shows, but never anything about graves that are deep. I’ll be looking at periwinkles with extra scrutiny now. In the video there was a patch that didn’t seem to have trees on it just deep grass. That might be it. I hope we get videos of a search for the graveyard. The paranormal thing is not my interest, but I would still watch those videos. As a relic hunter what places are the best spots to start metal detecting? Someone told me that filled in outhouses are gold mines, but that seems like a lot of digging and even after all these years it still seems gross.

Jill I enjoy researching to see if there were colonial houses out in fields. Those are easy to find too & now that they are fields, easy to detect. The iron gets spread around so your not blanking out good targets with 50 nails. As you drive down the road, look for high spots in the field. They always built on high spots. Sun light was priceless & you don't get it in the valleys. Wind is better up top for drying cloths too. If you see a big field & there's a tree out there by itself or small patch of tress, there's someone buried there & the house site won't be far away. Walk around in the field & look for the broken chips of bricks. Jackpot! Look around the edge of the fields. If you see a section on the edge that is being choked out by Ivy vines, the house wasn't far away. Look for yellow daffodils growing near the edge of the woods. They were always around the old homes & they never die. When the old houses get bulldozed into the woods, the Ivy & daffodils will just grow there now. Chestnut trees. They all had one for food. Over the years old chestnut trees & oak trees used to used by the family & would have been nailed to many times. Forestry departments will scan them for metal & if they are full of nails they don't want to tear their equipment up, so they'll leave them. Look for these signs in & around fields & you'll find old stuff.

Rich samuel great post! I am curious about the meaning of chips of brick on a grave. Why? I would have never thought of scanning an oak or chestnut for metal, but it makes perfect sense. I am very interested in any flora that would be a sign of a home and garden. Daffodils and ivy I'll look for from now on. I know to look for mints since they never really die off.

Jill the brick chips are from the chimney & sometimes foundation. I love finding brick. It doesn’t have anything to do with the graves. Graves shouldn’t be dug anyway. It’s disrespectful. The brick chips are always holding old coins, silver, brass, copper & relics. I have friends that dig privies. People used them as trash pits once they filled & the had to dig another one. Good place for old bottles
@EvansvilleJill
@EvansvilleJill 7 жыл бұрын
Rich samuel I agree about the graves. I could never dig around a grave even. I misunderstood and thought you meant the brick chips were put on the grave and it was something to look for. I thought the chips were a superstition, like brick dust is. Some folks believe that brick dust will prevent spirits for entering a house if put at the thresholds. I would love to be involved with an outhouse dig. What a strange statement! lol! I can see how it would be a gold mine.! And the layers would be like a time line going back. I would love to do a property dump site too. One thing I find odd about where they dumped their trash is exactly how close they were to the main house. I’ve seen one dump site that was maybe ten feet, if that, from the only door on a log home. The dumping point off was at the top of a20-25 ft steep hill/overlook. The house was occupied for over a hundred years and from what we could tell the dumping was done through the whole time. Imagine all the things that could be found. Anyway, I mentioned the house site and how close the dumping was to the house during an anthropology class and the professor said it was actually common to dump some stuff close to, usually behind a house. It doesn’t seem very logical, but they must of been careful about what they put in it because I’m sure animals would love a dump. If I was still young and had that kind of energy I'd go dig up nice slice of that site. Do you just mostly do metal detecting? I have to ask about your most interesting find.

A lot of people have suggested this on previous videos, but it would be a fantastic idea to put up security cameras in and around the house. One good idea could be to set up a 24 hour livestream of the house (inside _and_ out) that people could tube into whenever they want. I'm sure it would be a huge hit. If I remember correctly, there are still some livestreams currently running that first started up back in the 90s!

I just watched all 4 videos and enjoyed them. First, I would really like to know what happened in Video #1 with the well. Did you drop your camera down the well? Second, I am extremely curious about what your intentions are with the buried bodies in that unmarked cemetery. I love history and am fascinated with the fact that there were people buried there from the Civil War era. It might be interesting to find out who they are. There must have been death certificates issued for these paupers. It would be interesting to at least get a list of names for the deceased. It is possible that they have descendants looking to find out where their ancestors are buried. With so many people doing DNA tests and tracing their ancestry, it could be of some help to others. It seems like such a small house. I'm extremely curious how a family would survive in such a small place. I didn't see any signs of a bathroom. Are there any remnants of an outhouse? I would definitely want to know if there was a cesspool out there! Have you traced the purchase history and the deeds? I wonder who the very 1st owner was and what date that might have been. I wonder if it might have been from one of the land grants from the colonial period. I have so many curiosities and questions. I would definitely be scouring the ground for signs of yesteryear that might help build a picture of the original land owners and those that followed. You never know what you information you may find. So many famous pioneers went through Virginia and lived in the backwoods of Virginia. Who knows? It could provide a nice story and make for a nice published book.

I stumbled across a drug den on a photo shoot of an 18th century cemetery that wasn't maintained at all by the local council at that time. Lots of undergrowth among the chest tombs & monuments. Medical swabs, syringes, foil, and other trash were strewn around. Fortunately there weren't any junkies about. I left as quickly as possible, and on the way out I saw some spaced out looking vagrant among the tombs. Close call.

Dom Musilli I don’t think it’s so much a matter of “starting over” that he’s referring to, as much as preserving history. Anyone can start over and build something new, (though I doubt that he’d do it that deep in the woods), but historical structures are something that can often be preserved. After living in Germany for 10 years, that’s the one huge contrast I noticed between North America and Europe. Here in America, we are always so eager to tear things down, whereas in Europe, they actually work to preserve even the old cobblestone roads.
@dommusilli3975
@dommusilli3975 6 жыл бұрын
NubianP6 well being from Buffalo NY i can 100% disagree with your assessment of how historical structures are treated here. But my point was that building is way too decrepid to be preserved safely and the only option other than demolish and rebuild would be to let it go naturally which also serves no purpose. If it were in better shape then we'd be having a different conversation.
@NubianP6
@NubianP6 6 жыл бұрын
Dom Musilli Lol, well you’re certainly free to disagree with me. I welcome all points of view-after all, that’s how we discover, learn and grow, right? However, the point that I was trying to make is that in comparison to Europe as a whole, we have *inarguably* been far more likely to demolish old structures than they are there in Europe, and if you’ve ever visited the continent, you’d have to agree that this is true. Now that isn’t to say that we don’t preserve historical features here in the US as well. I am originally from Pensacola, Florida, and as the nation’s second oldest city, I have definitely seen my fair share of historical preservations there, as well as in the many other states that I have lived in over the years. My only point in drawing the comparison is that there seems to be more of a respect for old structures, particularly in the parts of Germany where I have lived and visited. As far as preserving this particular structure goes, I know from reading the KZbinr’s previous comments that he isn’t interested in doing so, preferring instead to allow nature to take it over, and that is entirely his choice, and one that I can respect. Either way, it was a very interesting find, and I for one look forward to any subsequent updates that he may decide to post. Thanks for your input! 🙂
@dommusilli3975
@dommusilli3975 6 жыл бұрын
NubianP6 we i dont know if i would say inarguably. Maybe most countries (especially eastern europe) but in london they are knocking down 100+ year old buildings to build apartments. Germany is doing similar things. Some western countries are definitely losing respect for old structures and their history in general, that i do agree with. I am from a city where we go out of our way to preserve old buildings and if nothing else, repurpose them so at least the original structure remains. In one of the bar areas, literally every bar is an old house. Those buildings are about 150 years old and have been renovated to be businesses but at one point were homes. Many cities in the other northeastern and southern are like this too. Maybe youve just been living in the wrong places haha.

Ken I just stumbled across these videos. If I may, I'd like to offer a suggestion as to how you can get better access to the property in order to answer more of your questions. If the place is fenced buy or rent some goats and put them on the property. Depending upon the number of goats you get the property could be cleared off of all brush in under a year. Any artifacts now hidden would be exposed. Construction fencing can also be rented incredibly cheap if there is no fence there now. I hope you see my post and follow through. I've subscribed just in case!

You americans have so little history, you should save that house! In germany we do this all the time and are able to save our historic sites so our descendants can enjoy and learn from them. My house is like 450 years old and during 1620 to 1640 a lot of swedisch soldieres plundered the site, tortured, killed and let people starving and approx 10 people were buried there...you can still see lines of the fort and trenches.. Thats prob. sad but its a history theme, not a ghost buster theme for me and a beautiful place to live in the green nowadays ;)

Histortic preservation is becoming trendy but its quite costly as national historical society guidelines require a certain level of authenticity. Some people will find pieces of homes within the same area from around the same period to help rebuild but since this is so isolated, its unlikely that you'd be able to rebuild it and keep its historical value.

Nice videos! I have to also add if you have not done so yet and want to dig up more info on the house a picture is worth a million words. What I mean by that is it’s possible to get an idea of the layout of what it use to look like by going back in time using google earth. You could possibly see the driveway without all the new vegetation growth and possibly locate the cemetery. In normal cases you can go back to 1944 and see satellite pictures of the property using google earth.
@EvansvilleJill
@EvansvilleJill 7 жыл бұрын
Aaron Thomas I would love to see old satellite images of my property. Where do I go to start looking for something like that? Please share. Searching for spots that might have been a building would be easier from a satellite view. I have several old foundations that I would love to figure out what they were, but I’m sure there are more buildings that I can’t see a foundation of, but possibly could see with a satellite view. I found a summer kitchen, at least that’s the best guess so far and a carriage house. Those were obvious. They seem to have so many out buildings back then. Finding out where the buildings were with satellite images would help pin down where to relic hunt first. I do know that finding out about the neighboring properties and who owned them can bring a wealth of information. Back then lots of families would buy and build close to each other and splitting the property as kids grew up too. I guess that’s one way to keep a kid close by, just deed them land next to yours and you would get to watch your grandkids grow up. It can be shocking to realize that most folks in an area were related some how. I guess it does make sense considering how isolated communities were. You married into a neighboring family because your options were limited. If nothing else finding out about their community can be interesting. Things like neighborly disputes were written up in newspapers. So were ‘who visited who’ and ‘who traveled where’. The local papers were little more than gossip rags about all of your neighbors. It makes for interesting reading once you figure out the players.

Jill the way I discovered and use it as a tool was just for the reason you are, and I’m happy to share it with you. I was trying to find good spots to metal detect for relics myself I bought a real nice metal detector and parks were not what I liked to go to, but here in Texas it’s rather hard unless you have permission or own land where you have the relics. Like a lottery depending on what type of relics you’re looking for. The only way to utilize this is to download the google earth to your laptop or pc. It doesn’t work the same on your phone. In the screen where is shows the actual map in the top towards the left (not on the left side outside of the map picture shown) it has clock click on that and it should then show you a time bar on the top left of the map picture. Just FYI some pictures are covered by clouds where your target area is and if you go to the left or right on the map it clears up. Story of my life the one place I wanted to see is blurred out just go back further or advance a little. Some can only go back 10-20 years but most cases it goes back to 1944. It’s the closes to time travel we will ever see 😉 😉!! I hope this has helped you out and good luck on your research and discoveries!

If they are not sure how many people is buried there, how could they make sure they "relocate" all of them. I would not take the risk of bulding something like a vacation home and then have to get out because of strange things happening. And after these videos I guess no one would buy that property to live in it. I agree with the owner, just let nature take care of it and let it undisturbed.

Interesting place and a bargain. Not too thick that woodland. How many acres and what is the timber potential? I take it there are services nearby. Would make a great development if there is a market for it. Maybe get some urban explorers to scour it. These youngsters will go through it with a fine toothed comb. Got to get someone you can trust though. Even better get some surveys on those trees and the underwood and start managing the woodland. Can provide great habitat and and income on timber. I take it planning permission would be easy to get to rebuild the house. Nice grounds to have. I guess everyone there has a lot of land though so maybe no market except for personal or legacy use.

I always lived where there was city water. I always think it's a little freaky to live near old cemeteries, before they put the caskets in a concrete vault. They buried the people in boxes in the ground. The bodies decomposed, ground water filtered through the bodies and pooled in aquifers, then people dug wells and pumped the water out. Drinking water filtered through dead people. Now of course, it's just bones.
