It's an even crazier dynamic when you consider the whole reincarnation circumstances where he has the mind of and adult, whereas she has the mind of a teen. If he told her no, in what world do you think she would listen to him? His words don't hold the weight of a parents. And there are even some cases where children will go against what their parents say behind their back. There was no other choice at the time if he actually wanted to try and protect her. And I need to really drive this home. He superimposed Serina on Ai and vowed to protect her and her family before she gave birth. In his mind he already failed to protect that family, and because he was superimposing Serina on Ai, it's practically like he let Serina die twice. So of course he is going to become overprotective and would even be willing to lie to be sure of it. He is human.

Two, technically speaking, it's almost like he isn't even her real brother anyway given they both were reincarnated. Keep in mind that Aqua was already a full grown adult with a degree and a job in his past life before he died while Ruby was still young and essentially bedridden her entire life. Aqua also watched Ai get stabbed and watched her die in front of him while Ruby was in another room. Aqua has a pretty solid grasp of the events and developed PTSD and an obsession with the killer but Ruby, being younger and less involved with the events, eventually got over it.

There are a few factors that play a part in the choice Aqua makes in an attempt to protect his sister. 1. He was never into Idols to begin with. The only reason he supported Ai as much as he did was because he superimposed Serina with Ai. It's very clear he had a really strong connection with Serina, probably may even saw her as his own child given how often she was in the hospital. He would slack off and hang in her room constantly spending time with her. Her dying clearly affected him greatly, and his only solace was in supporting Ai and protecting her. He still doesn't know that Ruby is Serina. 2. Ai is dead. He couldn't protect her. In his mind, it's kinda like he let Serina die twice. And worst of all, it was directly in front of him as she bled out, turned cold, and he couldn't do a single thing to stop it from happening. 3. The father is still out there. If he was willing to leak information in an attempt to harm Ai, who's to say he wouldn't do the same to his kids? Which, as a reminder, he knows about them unlike everyone else. Meaning just as Aqua can infer who their father is, the father could do the same and figure out who they are. And the more popular they get, the more seen they become. 4. He obviously doesn't want what happened to Ai to happen to his sister. Was he wrong in what he did. Ya, I think so. I think the problem I had with you two here is you didn't know when to let it go despite knowing his reasonings. Plus, I don't like that you turned this into a team Aqua vs team Ruby thing, even if it was just meant as a joke. Basically I think you are being way to hard on him considering what he went through and his intentions. He isn't attempting to crush her dreams, he wants to protect her because now he has a trauma due to not being able to protect those closest to him twice already.

I sympathize heavily with Aqua. He doesn’t want his sister going into the idol industry under any agency that he feels like he can’t 100% trust because of the super low effort/reward ratio and garbage working conditions. Especially some underground agency that has bad rumours floating around about it. I’d try to talk my sibling out of joining some underground company that just approached them on the street too. I also understand why he uses the methods that he does. Even though from an ethical standpoint the way he goes about it is pretty messed up, you have to keep in mind that he has severe underlying trauma from watching his mother literally bleed out in front of him and him not being able to do anything about it while being soaked in her blood. Are his methods purely emotional? Sure, but it’s mostly just because this guy doesn’t want to take any chances whatsoever and lose the only family he has left. It’s also worth noting that he probably never received proper counseling after the murder (at least it’s never mentioned) so it’d honestly be surprising if his thoughts weren’t at least even a little demented.

If you see other characters like that in other anime or drama, they often show father figure being manipulative and soul crushing, especially in the higher crust of society.

So, how about this for perspective? To Ruby, she's still going to the world of entertainment to walk the path of Godhood that her mother walked, this sparlkly utopia that she's going to "do right" where her mother's path got cut. To Aqua, it's not the "possible danger" that she might face. To him, it's the place he's going to fight and end a person's life. It's a place that is not only dangerous, it's a place where he's going to poke the bear, and fight it to the end. He does say that he's not against her being an idol. It's more like letting her enter NOW when he's about to enter himself to the minefield to set his own mines. Like letting your sister go to the one park where you're going to gunfight a bigger gang. She cannot know what he's about to do, but he can't let her be in the "splash zone" where she is in as much risk as he's putting himself either. She can do whatever she wants as long as she does it AFTER he either ends his quest or someone related ends him.

Yes the show is about revenge but the underlying story is also about how the entertainment industry is and how harsh it can be. Which is the main reason i got so into the manga. I dont know much about the Japanese idol industry but ive seen bad things about it. Im more familiar with the Korean idol industry and let me tell you, its hell, even when you make it big. But for alot of people like AI its still worth it despite everything they have to go through.

Personally I'm more on Aqua's side, sure I WANT Ruby to live a happy life and possibly achieve her dreams. The problem is that she's a bit too naive for her own good, or to put it another way: she's too pure. Aqua on the other hand has personally witnessed and fallen pray to the dark side of the idol industry. In his previous life he was killed by an insane idol fan and then during his next life that same person straight up killed his new mom in front of him and he got to personally witnessed as the life drained from her eyes. After everything Aqua has witnessed he doesn't want anything like that to happen to his sister (who is also the patient he had the deepest bond with during his previous life which only adds to his affection for his new sibling which explains why he's so protective of her). While I feel bad for Ruby, just like her brother, I want her to live a life that WON'T lead to a crazy dude stabbing her in the gut.

It's a question that has been presented time and time again. Would you be more satisfied living in comfort in a cage of pity, or would you rather live your life freely knowing that you can fall into despair at any moment? People say that Aqua should be more "mature" because he has the mind of a 30 year old inside of him, but honestly, I don't think even a 30 year old could bear to watch their loved one get murdered right in front of them. Not just that, but also in that special person's embrace as they slowly lose their warmth, the light draining for their eyes, all while covered in blood. It's far too cruel. With all of that in mind, I'm on Aqua's side on this one. Not because I think he's morally "right", or anything preachy like that. It's for the sole fact that if I were in his shoes, I don't think I would be any better.

There's also the fact that the mastermind is still going around, still alive, with aqua having no clue who it is. If Ruby becomes popular and that person responsible for Ai's death recognizes her, we don't know if he'll tolerate that. The thing with aqua is, while I get what he's doing he should still let his sister live her life because if she finds out, she will hate him. You guys should also keep in mind that aqua has been working under the director for like 10 years so he has a much better idea about the industry, compared to ruby. New mom is only doing the idol group now in order to stop Ruby from pursuing becoming an idol with an agency that won't protect her like they would. She agrees with Aqua but she sees that Aqua's methods aren't working and will lead to Ruby taking more risks instead. Ruby is a child that didn't get to live in her first life, then she didn't get the same level of trauma from Ai's death as Aqua did. Aqua has literally failed to protect Ai TWICE, and to the same crazed fan even. Aqua also also knows about their father, while nobody else does. Aqua knows that he literally can't stop Ruby just by talking to her, which he already has tried talking to her. But Ruby is determined to go down this path, because she doesn't know about the stalker at the hospital, she doesn't know about her brother being her doctor, she doesn't know her doctor was killed by the stalker, she doesn't know that her mom's killer was the same stalker, she doesn't know her father had their mother killed. Aqua would rightfully rather be hated by his living sister than risk having to bury his dead sister.

Also we can't forget that there is a killer on the loose who killed both Ai and Aqua. The father is the main suspect so why would Aqua let Ruby go down the same path as Ai? At least he is allowing her to be an idol with the family company.

I think a lot of people forget that the dad is still alive. If the dad was willing to go through indirect routes to harm their mother, how do we know the dad won't stop there? The dad could just as well bring harm on Ruby and Aqua. And the more famous one become the easier they are to find. The dad is the only one that knows Ruby and Aqua exist. Just as how Aqua can find out who the dad is the dad can do the same. This is also why he said "I should be the only one..." and that sentence that trails off means he should be the only one to be put in the sight of danger. We can all talk about how any rando could do something no matter what profession. But we are forgetting, the dad still exists. The dad is very influential in the Japanese entertainment industry with a lot of power that he is able to hide his name and relationship with Ai, much less hide any dna records that connect him to the kids. The dad didn't want Ai's kids born in the first place. Never bothered to visit and doesn't care about his own flesh and blood. For Ruby going into the entertainment industry, she is at risk of being harmed about 100 times more than a normal person going into the industry as there is someone in the acting/idol industry that has a direct connection with them and wishes them direct harm and will do at nothing, while welding a lot of power in said industry. What Aqua did behind her back may be morally in the gray zone, but he has severe PTSD and the fact that Aqua doesn't have to worry about a risk of a normal stalker going after Ruby but the dad who seems to be very crafty. Because the dad is still alive it's way too risk for Ruby to enter the idol industry at this time (or so Aqua is probably thinking). Aqua is so traumatized that he is both paranoid over the dad while obsessing over the dad at the same time. Aqua feels like their lives can never be at ease until the dad is dead.

In all honesty the girl wasn't even 'bad mouthing' her work colleagues, she was just expressing her frustration with the agency like Aqua asked her to. Not to mention her saying "They're scouting for idols like crazy" and Ruby immediately getting scouted correlates with her story. Also do remember; Idol careers at least in this anime are miserable, while Aqua was in the wrong for the first thing he did ( Ruining her chances with the legitimate company ), he was right about steering her away from the second agency, Ruby is very airheaded and definitely not as knowledgeable about it all as Aqua & her mom is. She'd be stepping into an industry thinking its all about what she watched AI doing, AKA what's fed to the public, while having a high chance of living miserably, without Aqua or her mom to support her in these agencies.

It’s pretty tragic, Ruby is trying her best to become and idol and everyone knows she’s a spitting image of her mother and Aqua just wants to protect her from that life after watching everything played out by their mom. It feels like at some point aside from finding out whoever the dad is, Aqua and Ruby are going to clash with their ideals.

Basically Aqua’s plot to keep Ruby out of the idol industry to protect her from it has failed, as now that he’s driven off the legitimate promoters she’s now getting offers from much shadier ones. Aqua and Miyako decided if she’s insistent on going down this road to keep her in-house, as they can try to shield her from the bad stuff as possible as well as guide her along the best possible path for her career. The problem is Strawberry Productions has been out of the idol business for a decade by this point, so they don’t know what the current conditions of the industry are. That was the point of bringing in the random girl - in order to determine the foundations of the group that will be built around Ruby.

To me it's not even he is doing all this protection work in quiet of twisted manner. He should do that but he also need to understand you can't limit one of a hard dreamers by just keep attempting something to stop them, the more he actively pushing her the more she seeking for it because I believe that's how human way of living apart from the one that pretty much give up at the moment. If anything he should support her, but if he really wanna protect her than he need to conspire and do possibly even more twisted thing to other people cause the threat is external and mostly comes from fans. Idol world especially in Japan is quiet of an ugly world, what we've seen so far in this anime is just small example of the whole industry darkside. So I don't blame him to do this much but I expect he's doing it smarter than this.

I'll say this. I'll forever stand by Aqua's side bcoz I have gone through what he has gone through. I agree we should let people dream and if it was any other industry of work I would be 50/50. But entertainment industry is the most hellish form of work place for various reasons. There r very very few people who work in it have made it through talent and work alone. Most of the times one has to sacrifice their own self worth to climb up. Is it really worth to sacrifice everything to achieve ur dream? I don't think so. And this is purely my own opinion. I have seen many people break apart bcoz they sacrificed everything for their dream. Then again I know exactly what Aqua is going through bcoz I have been and am still in that place. I would rather have my loved ones hate me if it means I can protect their life than just not do anything. That's just me tho. I can try to understand the other side of this. But I don't think I'll be able to convince myself to agree to the other side of this argument. 😊
