Bummer about the spreader, Pete. I wanted to thank you for being so kind to our daughter and son-in-law last weekend at the market. They had a chance to meet you and buy some things (bacon-which was incredible!; eggs-also incredible-and a ham which we will enjoy here at home before too long). Your kindness to them, Pete, was generous and much appreciated. It meant a lot to them. Thank you! There is a ton of work involved with the spring time and you certainly will not be lacking in that category-but it's all good work, life-giving work. And your plans for the addition are exciting. You have a beautiful farm, Pete. Always grateful for your videos-I know they add a lot of time to an already busy day. But they are always one of the highlights of mine. Hope you all had a blessed Easter-and thanks again for your kindness!

In the german village where i was born, there was this tale: A man had to disassemble his timberframed hoghouse, because the pig didn´t fit through it after feeding. And they couldn´t slaughter it inside the small shed. That was back in the first years after WWII, when food was short and they used the pigs to recycle every calory hey got their hands on. So kitchen-scraps, low-quality food an residue went straight to the pig pen.

Hey Pete! Fun story! For the last 4-5 years my wife and I have been looking to start a new life far away from the city. I was born in a country town and miss the quiet and the hard work. We've been looking around the country, but never found anything that fit our desires, until about a year ago we found your channel and fell in love with NY. Since then we've been looking all over for our own few acres and now today we just signed all the paperwork on our own place about an hour from you! It's our absolute dream property and I can't wait to put into action some things you've already taught us! Hope to see you at the farmers markets and equipment auctions once we've moved! Thanks for all the amazing content!

My father never had a manure pile. He workedvwithvhorses and spread onvthe fields through the winter. Thevhoorses would be covered with icicles as well as the scarf he had over his face. When the horses were brought back to the barn they were given a ginger boltice that mom would make on the kitchen and the house would be filled with the scent of ginger. Your spreading of the manure broughtvall of those memoriies back. Thank you for the memories.

Great video, Pete, thank you. As a first generation farmer, I find a lot of wisdom and insight watching your videos. Last year I bought a used muck spreader and just this week I got to use it for the first time. I tell you, now, I finally understand why there’s always a smile on your face when you’re spreading muck. There’s something special about the feeling that you are giving back to the land so that it can keep feeding you and your animals into the future. It’s a wonderful symbiosis to feel a part of. Have a great day. Greetings from Sweden.

.... laughing ..... your spreading manure brought back a memory from the early eighties when I drove pretty much nightly from home in the Okanagan Valley to Vancouver on the coast about 250 miles away .... One night I had a passenger and as we crested the last pass before the decent to the coast I mentioned "sure can smell the ocean tonight'. It was not uncommon to smell the Pacific if the breeze was right. My passenger was not able to, could not distinguish, I attributed that to be a flatlander. About an hour later we were trundling along though the Fraser Valley that is predominantly agricultural, all forms, all the way from enclosed mushroom farms all the way to dairy operations. My passenger suddenly proclaimed that they could now smell the ocean. That it was not, manure had been spread on some of the fields. That memory always gives me a chuckle thinking about the different exposures we have in life .... Things sure are ramping up, quite the crescendo into spring for you .... was half expecting JJ to start turning the puddle into a mud hole. Guess that will happen in time ..... thx for the share .. as always .. never stop dreaming, just dream bigger .. have fun be safe, save our oceans .....

The yo-yo weather is driving me nuts. Last week stoking the fire through freezing nights, now sweltering under close to 90 degree weather. The ups and downs mean that it is unlikely we are going to get any fruit from the orchard this year. The pear tree blooms froze at the bud stage and the apples are in bloom now….and I’m sure that we’ll have at least one more hard freeze. Every year going into spring is different here. Last year it looked like rice might be the right crop and this year we are dry as a bone. Such is life in agriculture.
