I have a guy installed exactly what u said in my house. Before watching your tube I have no clue what he did. Now, I do. He hardwired the fire tv cube to hdmi 1 instead of sticking it behind my tv. As a former U.S.Coast Guard electronics technician I would just like to say, this was an excelent video . The information was spot on.. I also spent some time in the Coast Guard as an Instructor teaching electronics. mostly to people with no prior electronics backgrownd. I cut the cable way back in 1980 when they started adding commercials. I've saved so much money it's mind boggling. Digital TV is the best thing thats happened. When you add a DVR you can record Off The Air programming all for free. The little indoor antenna reminds me of the old rabbit ear antennas, one of my friends uses one thats hidden behind a picture..My friends are amazed at quality that my TV displays when watching OTA TV. Got more than a few to make the cut.. You really explained the simple process well.. Love your videos. 73..

I never went to cable TV, I still have my OTA installation - and actually use my old OTA antenna. But I rarely turn it on - there just isn't much of anything worth watching outside to occasional PBS show/special or news coverage of bad weather.

I have watched some of your videos in the past , I watch lots of you tube in the last 10 years... Because in 2008 I flat out QUIT watching TV....I just subscribed to your chanel and I WILL watch more that I have missed. Been a Ham since 1976. Good effort and very useful for those not in-the-know. I'm a form ham from about 40 years ago, and I understand pretty much everything you're trying to impart. Digital TV is definitely superior to analogue, but it does have its limitations. In my area (47374) I was able to get stations from Indianapolis, Dayton and Cincinnati via analog transmissions and a good antenna system. Since the transmission, all I can get are the Dayton stations, and then only with a tower and amplifier, which I'm not interested in pursuing. Hence, I have to suffer the expense of cable or satellite providers, or limit my viewing to what's available online. Better is not always better for everyone.

When I lived in the craven county area in New Bern NC, my daughter & I took the little antenna on the satellite box inside (the one you point your remote to). We put it on the end of a short TV cable, hooked up to TV and placed the antenna over the curtain rod in window. We could pick up 26 channels.

i use a combination of adjustable distribution amp and a pair of filters in line, one LTE filter and an FM Trap, the amp is turned down to the minimum required power to gain signal strength with minimum distortion from multi-path due to the fact that i'm using a USB TV Tuner to keep an eye on news/weather updates, i've shown a few people the setup and they are blown away with how well the setup works indoors with an indoor antenna, good vid and great info, thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience with us

I run two separate 12 foot boom TV antennas installed in my attic. Both are preamplified. I live approximately 45 to 56 miles from two major cities. Each TV antenna is roughly pointed to each respective city. I am able to receive all stations from each city clearly. That includes 4 PBS stations from one city and 6 PBS stations from the other city. Also all major networks from both cities. All in all, that is a lot of channels. I combine both cables to a splitter to bring both TV antennas to "one" cable. That one cable goes to a multiple distribution splitter to drive 6 TV's plus one HDHomeRun network dual TV tuner. Now some might say combining two TV signals from two antennas down to one cable can't be done....But it can if you know what you are doing. Also, you might need to use some attenuation on one line to balance everything... It works great. I can get sports from one city when the other is blocking it out. Also, the PBS stations usually transmit different programming per city, so that gives me lots of options too.

I returned "the best OTA antenna ever" that I had purchased, & bought a $15.00 Radio Shack rabbit ears antenna that brought in about 60 channels And I live in the mountains. I have it bolted to the roof where the satellite used to be. It has been through rain, hail, heavy snows & high winds & it still functions perfectly. I tried a couple of those "other" ones & they did not do any better that my rabbit ears.

I have the ClearStream 4 Max and have been using that antenna for four years. I mounted where my DirecTV dish use to be :-) and on a good day I will get channels from over 90 miles away. The nice thing is is that all of the channels that I always pick up stay rock solid even during bad weather.

I enjoyed the video. I cut the cable about five years ago. I am running a Channel Master 8 bay UHF/VHF antenna here in West Palm Beach, Florida. It is mounted 12' above the high point of my 2 story town house roof. I am currently getting 91 channels on a good day. When I first cut the cable I got about 70 channels, but more channels have been added in the last five years. :) '

This is essentially paid endorsement advertising for Antennas Direct and the other named brand products that he is recommending. His presentation is good but with uneven video recording production, specifically the audio. ("Bad sound makes good video look bad.") His video recordings in this project are good and I make that judgment as a professional videographer since 1980. Antennas Direct markets some good antennas and peripheral equipment but they are overpriced and over-hyped. (Fortunately, their big margin pricing means if you shop hard on eBay you can find their antennas discounted by resellers.) I have tested some of them and continue to use one model in my difficult reception location. He has some good information but he fails to include other critical information and techniques. I’ve had experience with TV antennas since the 1950s and I have a continuous listing with an extensive amount of free TV antenna information on eBay. Search for "Winegard Antennas For HDTV" using the quote marks. I am not paid by any manufacturers and the reports of my ~60 years of experience with TV antennas is purely subjective.

I bought the DB4E digital antenna 8 years ago. I live 40 miles northwest of St Louis. I get 46 channels over the air. I immediately cut off the cable tv (saving myself $80/month). I must admit some of these channels are not worth watching but many are really entertaining. Plus, in 8 years I have saved enough money to buy a decent used pickup truck and paid cash.

Thank you for all your efforts of this channel good job. I have been a electronic technician most of my life. I Built a over air antenna with a RF amplifier in line from Radio Shack $49. It worked very well for the channel I was trying to receive 69 WFMZ out of Allentown, PA. To my surprise I received 4 channels not just the one with extremely clear picture. In a 720p format on a $35 used Vizio 43” DTV with a RCA Universal Remote control Home Depot $9.99 Just as I was going to install on top of the peek of my roof in a tripod $45 online, they changed the transmission frequency and the tower location. I use cable for one reason and one reason only. Internet. I love talking to AT&T and telling them I use Spectrum Internet and having the sales people admit they can not match the speed. Now, that does not mean that I do not want "cut the cord" for the TV portion. I do and this is very topical for me as Indoor antennas do not work over the distances. I have checked various websites and while I am close, I can not get close to a window with my indoor antennas. I need a good outdoor antenna. Thanks Eric. As always, very informative video.

He is so right about Antennas direct they helped me to choose the right antenna for where i live. I live in Naples Florida they suggested me to purchase the DB4E antenna. I had it installed on the side of my home and above the roof. The towers that serve the Naples area are about 48 miles from me in Ft. Meyers. I scanned my TV and got 34 channels that are crystal clear. With so many shows to watch. The person who made this video is excellent in his presentation and knowledge. He should be a Motivation speaker.

Thank you, I have been searching for a couple of weeks for infomation on the basics of cable cutting and this video provided more hard info than I have found in the entire rest of my search. I even used the recommended source you provided to research which antenna would be recommended for my area with immediate and informative results. I still have one unanswered question that I have not found anyone willing to answer. I recently installed a metal roof on my house. We live on the coast in NC or what is better known as hurricane central and given the rusults of the last one, have chosen well in putting on a metal roof but I can find no one willing to offer any opinion on the effect that would have on an atic installed TV antenna. Metal roof over attic antenna will block out or greatly reduce signal reception. Putting an outside antenna a couple feet above the metal roof will work great, and the metal roof acts like a signal reflector off the metal. You can either ground the metal roof or try electrically isolate the metal roof and directly connect the TV output to the roof itself.

My compliments on a great video. Nobody but a ham with pro cable installation experience could have created such a masterpiece. I did suspect that pointing the reflectors in opposite directions would give you north/south coverage, as you eventually discovered. Many years ago, I had a tv setup, complete with rotor, mast mounted amplifier and a 150-mile radio shack (channel master) antenna and a guy-wired telescoping mast. I could pickup W. Palm from Miami. Those were analog days. Wish I still had that system, but we sold it with the house. Plus, I really didn't want to bring down that beast. A hurricane eventually did. Tech has advanced, but I have yet to find an affordable signal amp, intelligent enough to equalize tv signal levels, so as to avoid overloads and such.

About 5 years back...I purchased an RCA powered indoor antenna, cost me $15 at a liquidation store...ran the channel scan and I got about 12 excellent quality, very stable Digital, TV Channels. I also get another 15 which are ok, but they can be good one day and not so good another day. But the 12 excellent channels include the major networks (ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS, etc) which is all we need. Plus we stream using Kodi for movies. So...to everyone...CUT THE CABLE...even an indoor antenna is a good and cheap investment.

my problem is when tv was analog I was able to pick up stations over 100 miles away. in Atlanta and Columbs Georgia. Im near Macon in Byron Georgia. when they went digital I lost my Atlanta and Columbus stations and I have even a hard time picking up Macon only 30 miles away from me. I am using the newer cable that you mention in your video. I have a rotator and antenna up above my houses roofline approximately 30 feet high.Ive tried with and without a preamp. Im lucky to pick up two channels now where I used to have over 10. Digital SUCKS for me LOL.

Build yourself a Gary Hoverman or 4 bay screen bow tie antenna you wont have any problems picking up stations 100 miles away. you might need a pre amp but I would try it without first.

The switch to digital also has brought some changes on how much power the FCC allows broadcasters to use. It is different for each market, but many have to beam their signal at a lower power to cover their targeted market where they may have used to use an omni-directional broadcast antenna in analog days. The few remaining VHF band broadcasters are more limited on power now, and this has been the reason many moved to the UHF band where they are allowed more power. Nobody in my market (southern Wisconsin) is on VHF anymore for this reason, even if they still use their original channel identifier on the UHF band. UHF simply does not carry over the horizon as well as VHF. FCC wants to pack more stations on UHF and free up VHF for other things, so they take these steps to reduce interference on the frequencies.

@@bfhammer I heard just the opposite. Uhf band is getting smaller every time you look around. In Tampa Florida USF sold their frequencies and quit broadcasting on UHF channel 16. There are signals on my tv but not viewable. Wireless bought the frequencies and are using them for wireless services. I heard the FCC wants to put tv on VHF and there goes the small antennas. Still don't know what's really going to happen. There is also talk about putting 2 tuners on all new tvs and the birth of new frequencies and must be connected to the internet to make TV 2 way. I hope not I'm happy not having a bill to pay for television service. I like only one bill for Internet and TV being free. Phone is prepaid and no other services needed.

I know you have probably done this, and may be insulted by being reminded of these basic steps. However, you’re not getting a decent signal in circumstances where everyone else in America would be receiving more channels than they could count. Assuming you have a modern HDTV that auto-programs your tuner, be sure the band is set to broadcast, and not cable. If you have an antenna amplifier, be sure to use it is plugged in to a proper power supply (i.e. wall socket USB) and not to a USB port on your TV (not enough power to run anything). Then use auto-program and auto-program every channel that is offered. Still having terrible reception? Be sure that the antenna wire is actually connected to the antenna and has good continuity all the way to your TV. Also, follow the suggestions as to wire quality and connectors, etc. in this video. Good Luck.

Excellent source of information to investigate the feasibility of getting over the air TV. I live in a challenging area for over the air TV but wish to "cut the cord" of the satellite providers due to cost. I plan to use many of the suggestions presented especially the applications that have station location and my likelihood of being able to receive them.

warren electronics is a good place to get tv antenna stuff. there is NO difference between the old tv antenna and a new one. Channel bandwidth is NOT affected by the antenna. since we still use the high end vhf channels(in my area) we still need a combination vhf-uhf antenna. any preamps/splitters etc are still the same as before. just be sure not to overload the preamp and or tv front end with to much gain. Try it without the preamp and see what you get first. when you change the tv from cable in to antenna in the sensitivity of the tv goes way up. I also have the 8 bay bowtie uhf antenna. That thing was first made in the 1950s and is still great today. at vhf-uhf the coper clad is just fine. my tv has a signal quality indicator to see how good the digital signal is. helpful, for aiming the antenna and or adjusting the gain of a distribution amp. overall a good helpful video. Update, at my house, with the db8e mounted 12 feet, pointed both North and South, no preamp, I receive 68 channels between Orlando and West Palm Beach. Directv is gone forever.

I lived in Fontana, Ca. I picked up about 110 channels. But Fontana is flat and open directly to Mt.Wilson, where almost all L.A.s transmitters are. 35 miles away. And that was with just a bent piece of welding rod.

When I was younger, I was fortunate enuf to recieve channels 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, and UHF. And that was more than enough. Now with cable, I have 700 channels, but not a frikkin thing that interests me, most the time. I discovered OTA TV when I bought a camper with an amplified antenna. I remember the cable and dish companies telling us "as long as you have us, you don't have to worry about the digital conversion...." We have two TV's at home, one on cable, for Fox News, Sports, etc. The other is OTA for normal viewing, like NBC (The Voice, news, "Chicago" dramas) Both are Smart, and we use that for KZbin, Amazon, Netflix and Pandora. We receive about 31 channels from 9 transmitters in the middle of South Carolina, using an amplified outdoor antenna (RCA) that looks like a flat pizza box. As an Amateur Extra Ham, I like having different receivers with different options.

But what options do people like myself have who live in an area known as being in a "hole" for communications and worse, we have an HOA that forbids ANY sort of visible antenna of ANY sort? I am desperate to not pay these near $200.00 or even MORE when I am a severely disabled former USMC Combat Veteran now confined to bed or electric wheelchair for whatever time I have remaining... I simply can't even afford TV anymore and it is an honest struggle to even pay the $80 per month for cable companies Internet service and if I download more than 3 games in any month it goes clear up to $118 per month! Sorry but I really wish folks with the know how could find some way t help we old completely Disabled Veterans who simply find it almost impossible to even be online much less on TV.

Don't know if my experience can help you or not - I recently decided to draw Social Security (reduced benefits) at age 62 due to health issues. I googled "free internet" and other similar terms. I didn't find any service that was totally free in my area, but did locate one that was $10.00 per month, 28 Mbps and unlimited, with no data caps (some parts of the country did, I believe, have free services available). Just providing your HOA with the FCC’s rule/law that they cannot prevent you from having an OTA (Over-The-Air) antenna for free TV on your outside space, e.g., a balcony, will quash their prohibition. They might come back with a new rule that you have to paint it to match something but you can point to the unpainted satellite dish antennas that may already be in place.

Here is another idea internet TV you can get a Roku set up for around $30 and use WiFi Roku is kind of like Basic cable but no local channels basic service is free Movie channel cost like we have Netflix that runs about $10 a month they do carry others like Hulu, CBS all Access, ETC not sure of the cost on those but you can find out everything by looking at their web site. There are other out there including one that runs $400. Everything is Al la carte so you do not have to get some package that you do not want. Roku it's self with the free channels has no monthly charge. PS they even have a box for older tv's so if you are still using an old CRT type with out HDMI or USB hook ups they got you covered! :) For internet check with the Telephone companies and see if they can do better! I think my brother pays $75.00 with his Dish account that is through Centurylink former Mtn. Bell.

I have the same dual antenna 65 feet in the top of a pine tree. Its hick but goes unnoticed. Works very well in my remote area. Hits the 80 mile away towers easily. Amplifier is a must for me.

I worked industrial telecommunications in Houston, then wireless public network in mo/Kan. Many cellular towers were on legacy TV station towers, many still had old TV station equipments and some even had live on air anounement booths from back in the day. I took some videos of the electronic hardware, it was FASCINATING to see large power tubes and electronics that I can only descide as first generation electronics. I visited many TV stations.

I live in Southeastern CT (06340). The last time I tried receiving OTA signals with a small flat screen I have in my kitchen and an HDTV indoor antenna, the only signals I could receive crystal clear were the various shopping network channels. I have never been able to pick up anything from New Haven, Hartford, Providence or Boston. I just tried TV Fool and it confirmed my predicament. I think I would need the best of the best outdoor antennas for reception. I was just running that test to see if I could receive any of the local stations in the event of a coastal storm and cable outages. Fortunately, during a few power outages Comcast Cables lines have remained undamaged and active. My cable components are powered via a UPS and that has been the best investment to date. The neighborhood can go dark but my WiFi remains active. Great info in the video, 73, W1RKB.

We went OTA shortly after the 2009 digital conversion after I saw how good OTA HD looked. We were also tired of paying $90 per month to TimeWarner for a lot of channels we had no interest in. I have over 30 years as telco tech so grasping the basics of the signal chain from the antenna to two tv's in our house was pretty straight forward. I got a lot of good info from a retired telco tech who did satellite tv and ota tv installation. I bought the proper coax stripper and compression tool, a spool of RG6 coax and connectors. For our location a CM4228 antenna made sense. Broadcast towers are all UHF, 35-65 miles away and within 10 degrees of each other. One exception is an independent station almost 180 degrees behind us and 20 miles away on VHF ch 12. The CM4228 picks this up just fine from the rear. The antenna is roof mounted with a clear view to the horizon. Because a 3 way splitter is used at the 1st TV and the farthest TV is 100' from the antenna, we use a CPA-19 pre amp. I added the max dB loss from the coax and the splitter = 13. The 17dB preamp is enough to overcome these losses and not so strong as to cause problems. Whether it's hype or truth, the CPA-19 was advertised as having a lower noise figure than other pre amps. So almost 10 years later this setup is working just fine. I should mention the reason for a three way splitter with two TVs is so I can feed the TV and the Tivo at our living room TV without an A/B switch. We did miss our DVR so we bought a OTA only Tivo and have been happy with the programming and functionality of the Tivo. Savings from going OTA is around $8500 so far.

Very good video, explaining radio and television concepts at an appropriate level. I have worked with radio for years, building my own antennas to receive weather satellite video. I do not have cable or the like. I only have over the air, and am using my existing bowtie antenna with it's preamplifier at the antenna. It works great. In the future, I am planning on upgrading to a larger array so I can pick up additional channels. Keep up the good work of informing us of options and tools to take advantage of this completely legal means of receiving television.

A very worthy investment in quality KZbin education. I have thirty years exp installing hi-end marine Mega Yacht systems, and every word shared here can be taken as Gospel. I've watched a number of vids on DIY home-build antennas, but the details can be quite tweaky and elusive. I'm also in So. FL, in the middle of the MIA/WPB market, and being able to "bend" the four-panel antenna should yield great results (without looking like an old set of bed-springs waving like Old Glory). Really cool video. Ive been cable free for 9 years using bat ear indoor antenna. I get about 25 - 30 channels with a 2010 sanyo flat screen. Im glas to learn of sources for better products. I also live in a small city with broadcast towers on a hill. So im sure that helps. I still watch to much Television and pay nothing. I do pay for internet. Imagine if that signal was sent the same way!! Id love it. Great video.

I think out of all the videos I’ve seen you are the real deal. I found you searching for some alternative or break from the WiFi trap I’m stuck in it’s ridiculous the way they have people stuck with whatever they want for you. I’m eventually going to come up with a way to get a wifi signal without them being able to do anything about it. It might be impossible I hope so because that makes me even more determined. I think when installing the Indoor leaf antenna (a good one with preAmp), placing it high in a window works, of course it needs to be oriented in a good direction.. Since U R not too far away from those 2 markets, U could get away with ½ of the DB 8 facing North & ½ facing South.. W.G.

At the farm I tried to use an old realistic tv antenna. Did not work to well. Going to go with the four bay antenna. About eight miles from town.. I think the smaller one will work fine. Enjoyed the video. Seventy thirds👍
