I think what most of us are looking for (if possible) is a way to create a thin volumetric cloud layer that looks very much like the NASA cloud layer in terms of shape and distribution but with more depth and realistic shadowing, like you see in orbital photos and video of Earth taken from the space station. The closest I've seen to that is Blender Guru's tutorial where he is using a subsurface scattering node with the NASA cloud layer that fakes this look somewhat effectively. But being a Blender project, it requires rendering, not real-time playback. Even just a thin, static sphere of premade volumetric clouds that look like the NASA cloud layer might achieve that realistic depth and shadowing we see in low earth orbit photos. Maybe.

I'm quite sure it wouldn't be too difficult for me to raymarch a volumetric cloud out of the Nasa texture but my goal is to make a Cloud solution that is traverseable and realistic looking - thus I am developing Atmos Forge: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nJXNdayrjdufrbs

@@ArghanionsPuzzlebox Cool. I have confidence it's possible. After seeing what is achievable in UE5 with real-time effects that were unimaginable a few years ago with light and geometry and particle systems (Lumen, Nanite, Niagara, respectively) this is just one more domino that needs to fall. :)

Thanks a lot but Im kinda sad, when seeing your Project in the store, I was hyped for a second you maybe got a triplanar volumetric cloud material working. A small tip for your project, if you want to avoid equator stretching, remove the texture map from the cloud material and instead create a somewhat believable cloud distribution with 3-4 scales of the cloud 3d material. That way you lose a lot of art direction for your clouds but they render correctly on round surfaces.

The atmos forge works to wrap around the planet. But it's not yet as good as it needs to be for a proper planetary cloud solution. Will update it.

Thank you! This is amazing! Can you show how to use the custom-gravity asset? The main level auto-opens, but I am not sure what to do with it.

Did you ever make a video showing how to set up the gravity for a player character with this project? I can't see how to get the player to fall towards the planet in the gravity planet project even when inside the gravity sphere.
@ArghanionsPuzzlebox17 күн бұрын
I've kept that tutorial on the backburner but got most things for it ready. You downloaded the project with Gravity enabled and its not working when just playing the example level that it comes with?
@iansmith330116 күн бұрын
@@ArghanionsPuzzlebox The gravity does seem to work, but it's everywhere, if I'm outside the gravity sphere in "space" my character is still affected by -Z gravity which I wouldn't expect.
@ArghanionsPuzzlebox16 күн бұрын
You would basically need to ensure that Gravity outside of the sphere domain is set to 0 for all objects. I would start with experimenting by disabling gravity altogether - the custom code for the sphere that is changing your characters gravity should then overrite the world default ( that would now be 0 gravity)

Amazing work! Is there any possibility to use it also the same quality in Path Tracer ? I am having problem with the opacity of the planet or reflection. Thank you!
@ArghanionsPuzzleboxАй бұрын
I haven't tried it with path tracing but the planet itself should work. The atmosphere and clouds most likely will glitch out

Need to try level packing the second planet to see if volumetric will work on both.

That is an actual interesting idea! If that works, it's transformational - not sure why I never thought about it.

gotta be honest it looks like shit, 10 seconds into this video you have volumetric clouds on top of the flat texture clouds and it's hideous.
@ArghanionsPuzzleboxАй бұрын
I understand. The default volumetric clouds of unreal engine 5 were not meant to be used this way but there are plenty of people who do not have a current better solution. I also would say that clouds make up about 10% of the content of this video - the rest is about the planet setup and giving that it's a free project, it's a perfect start for any individual that wants to make a planet in space.
