Guy Fawkes jumped from the gallows deliberately so that his neck broke. The sentence was for hanging to the point of death, disembowelling while alive, and then being chopped into pieces. They carried it out after his death but he escaped that.

Nobody in the UK is sore about losing 'the colonies'. For America, the War for Independence was the most important day in their history, for the UK, it was Tuesday. That isn't meant to be an insult, at the time the UK had a lot of colonies and were more concerned with the French and Spanish Empires, who were a far more imminent and dangerous threat to the UK, whilst losing the 13 Colonies was not really seen as a big deal as the UK controlled around 25% of the world at the time and was losing and gaining territories constantly.

Yeah, they said Natalie Portman was at the top of her game, and that maaay have been true, but she was actually not feeling very good about her career at this time. She actually saw this as a huge chance for her to show something different than the flailing Star Wars prequels and felt grateful to the production for giving her the role when they were starting to be harder to find. (I'm not sure how _Closer_ plays into all that, which was a moderate success and got her awards attention a year before this came out. _Black Swan_ was much later.)

I always preferred the sort of vaudeville saboteur from the book to the one man army in the movie. He's more clever and theatrical with his plans and more deliberate in his philosophy and it makes for a much more fascinating version of the story. He also goes way more in on gadgets and costumes in the book which is always fun to see. The movie's fine, but it's sort of a charming bastardization of the original.

It can be done but the way a normal riot starts is literally the worst way to make an actual lasting change. You need to hit all small military depots simultaneously and take all of their weapons which obviously takes a lot of people in an extremely coordinated attack. Once all those depots are attacked reinforcements with even heavier firepower will be dispatched with all available personal. From there you can either use the smaller depots as a base to defend or try to avoid the reinforcements and attack the larger depots while most of the troops are gone then use the larger bases for defense instead. Obviously, the number of bases and how defensible they are as well as troops numbers matter as well as how far apart the smaller and larger bases. Pulling this off requires so many trained and coordinated people with makeshift weapons that functionally it becomes impossible most of the time since they are just farmers with a third grade knowledge of chemicals and simple weapons.

Kit Harington (Jon Snow) is related to the mastermind of the Gunpowder Plot, Robert Catesby on his mother's side and played him in a TV show. Apparently, he's also related to a member of Parliament from the period (and maybe even King James I) on his father's side, who would have been blown up if the plot succeeded.

As to losing the colonies, no one cares. Even back then people who didn't have business interests didn't. This movie wasn't influenced by 9/11. The graphic novel came out well before September 11th.
@parker469a2 ай бұрын
The movie was influenced by 9/11 that's why it barely resembles the original comic. The names of characters are the same but V was a flat out anarchist so he wouldn't have wanted any government at all after the old one was brought down. All other characters behaviors and motivations are different as well to fit the Bush/Chaney administration better. FYI if this came out today it would be changed to fit Trump and Bannon a little better since fear mongering demagogues always use the same tactics to drum up fear and hate. One thing to keep in mind with this movie is they talk about the fallen US on the news but the news has been lying about everything else so it's possible that too is a fabrication. Now obviously the movie is implying that the virus from St Marie's destroyed the rest of the world without cure from V's blood but it's impossible to know for sure whether anything on the news was real.

I love this movie. And I feel interested in Guy Fawkes... because of a YA book author that I read as a little girl. She was British (she's past now), Diana Wynne Jones, and she is BELOVED by the greatest sci-fi/fantasy author of today (including Neil Gaiman). The book was "Witch Week" and uses her Chestomanci character who is seen from book to book. The point being, she had books on multiple realities, magic, gods, but in thst book : it's a world like ours except every person who seems like a witch is burned. But in an alternative world, tied to it, is a world where no people with magic are born... but are perfectly acceptable. Chestomanci comes to figure out what is happening to these 2 worlds. And it was the Guy Fawkes moment. I'm a Xennial, so I had to learn about it on my own, card catalog-style. It made me view the idea of government as an institution that should work for its people. Instead, our Hall Monitors don't care.
