@freedomworx even 80hp GM 2.5 "iron duke/tech 4" will melt a piston if the EGR is deleted . You have to be using it JUST RIGHT to get the 80hp to get hot enough But it can happen . . It’s hardly noticeable in diesel engines they have so much heat sink mass compared to gas engines. It’s truly pretty much a nox burner on a diesel. Most of the time u notice them melting is cuz the tuners (which is why u notice after tamper) go crazy on timing tryna get em responsive and completely forget these are diiiirectttt injection lol there’s hardly any dwell and we have a pilot shot to take up all dwell. Boost is response and timing is head gasket and valve seat popper, not the other way around like majority thinks. It’s all about cylinder pressures n egt on the danger side and boost and air density on the fun side. Gale really explains it best n simply. Though I'd throw this out there, the oil squirters are one of the main reasons the pistons don't melt. I have a 3406e 2ws that was inframed by the owner, they removed piston/rods without removing the oil squirters, it went 16k miles and I bought it. 2nd time I pulled a trailer at 925 post turbo temp it melted #2. They were bent just enough the piston wasn't cooled properly, but compared to the new squirters they looked identical except for light scratches.
@freedomworx8 ай бұрын
Yep. That's what I was referring to when I said the heat is lost to the oil. Are those a 2 piece or 1 piece piston? Does the oil shoot into a hole in the bottom of the piston on those?
@nicoletingey49958 ай бұрын
@freedomworx they are 2 piece piston, the squirters have 2 bent pipes and they have it figured out so they cover the bottom of the piston on each side when it's at the highest Temps. I really couldn't tell a difference on the angles new to the old scratched ones but it worked, it's set at 550 ish and it put all my new drivers in it. It won't pull as hard as some of my 700 hp cats but it an awesome engine. I have actually had older drivers mock me for running manifold ( pre turbo) and post turbo k type senders in an autometer dual input pyro. But the factory, and other options are so slow and wildly inaccurate. I just prefer to know exactly what my right foot is doing so I install the dual pyros in all my big trucks and just pre turbo in pickups. By the way, what shell is your laser pointer. Good job on the video by the way.

Yes, timing definitely has an effect. Retarding the timing will increase EGT and turbine drive pressure.Retarding timing is a strategy to spool turbos faster while staging. Most common rails are using multiple injection events now, so timing is a little weird. I like how you point out how the thought that the emission control and noise control systems in a modern truck are the largest exhaust bottleneck is false, and the downpipe is the real major issue. The first generation emission control systems WERE downright awful for performance, and also were not durable. They used packed crystal catalyst. About the only thing truck owners liked about them is the fact that they increased emission noise not unlike a glass pack on a motorcycle, something neighbors hated about them.
@freedomworx7 ай бұрын
I'm not sure that't the impression I was trying to make. I was making that statement in reference to non-emissions equipped vehicles. After treatment devices do create back pressure beyond the down-pipe. Installing a bigger down-pipe on an emissions equipped diesel isn't going to have nearly the effect that it would on a pre-emissions or deleted vehicle. Also, on a Cummins equipped truck, the down-pipes are already large enough because the turbo is on the side of the engine, so the down-pipe doesn't have to squeeze between the engine and the firewall like on a V configuration engine.

Yeah, it's pretty quick for it's size. It makes nearly 500HP at the tires. It was really quick before I added all that extra weight and larger tires.

Very interesting stuff to learn. I got a question. So will reducing the intake temperature, let’s say with a big heat exchanger after the turbo compresses the air, help lower the exhaust temps? If so is it significant?
@freedomworx8 ай бұрын
Yes, that’s an Intercooler, I discussed that towards the end of the video.

@@freedomworxomg 😮😅 I commented this while watching the video! I JUST got to the part where you said it! Thanks man. Sorry for not waiting till the end but that’s where my mind took me as it was processing the info you were giving me. I’m assuming adding a bigger intercooler also helps reduce the EGTs in say a 3.5 Ecoboost. But, but in that case, are EGTs a problem?
@freedomworx8 ай бұрын
@@bvbhu3dg gasoline engines actually have higher EGTs than diesel engines. But as long as the AFR is controlled, it’ll be fine. If the engine is stock, there is no reason to worry about it. Have you seen the Eco-Boost torture test narrated by Mike Rowe? They had that truck maxed out on towing capacity and ran it around Daytona full throttle for 24 hours 😂

there's a lot of thermal dynamic going on, if you play paintball, you see it all the time when you fill your tank vs shooting. Fill tank = compression stroke, spending tank pressure = power stroke, when gas escapes, or the space becomes less dense, there's less energy thus cooler temps. Just a different way of looking at it and relating.

Suggestion to keep the turbo last as long as the engine: Install a separat independent oil system for the turbo with an electric pump & water/oil heat exchanger. Pump start with ignition on & only allow the starter to run when oil pressure is up. & the oil pump will continue to run after ignition is switched off until a set minimum time delay & the oil temperature is below a a set value.

Turbos generally last as kind as the engine does. I’ve never needed to replace a turbo due to wear.

what's better for the engine under extreme load and fueling? I've only watched the first 6mins of this video, so if it's answered later please feel free to say "watch the damn video". 1. higher rpm / lower gearing, with slightly lower boost and EGTs 2. lower rpm, taller gearing, but slightly higher boost and EGTs I'm guessing there's a trade off between options 1 and 2 due to the 'recovery' time between combustion cycles being reduced with higher rpms. is this true? i usually try to be a option 1 driver, as i've always focused on EGT and lowering strain from over-gearing. But am i wrong? Thanks, and excellent video too!
@freedomworx8 ай бұрын
Watch the damn video! 😂. Seriously I discussed that later in the video. RPM is your friend under heavily loaded conditions. Keeps the EGT and stress lower on the motor. Lugging creates higher heat and pressure. 👍

I just found your channel and I absolutely love it. Never have wanted to build a motor more. I’ve been wanting to be able to download and try tunes on my Lbz, previous owner has a dsp5 switch on it. Don’t know much about tuning but I’d like to be able to screw around with it. Do you have any helpful information??
@freedomworx2 ай бұрын
Glad you are enjoying the channel. If you already have a DSP5 switch, that’s a start. You’ll have to work with someone like duramaxtuner.com and order an EFILive Autocal device to interface with your ECU. Generally the tuner will preload their custom tunes onto the Autocal and ship it to you. Then you just plug it in and load the tunes into your truck. Once you own the Autocal, you can use it to load anyone’s EFILive tunes i to your truck. They can just email them to you, you load them into the Autocal, and use the Autocal to load them into your truck. duramaxtuner.com/vehicle-type/switch-on-the-fly-tune-incl-efi-live-spade-lbz-2006-2007.html

@@freedomworx I really appreciate it. If I download someone’s tune, let’s say just one, can I just swap one tune for one I already have on the truck, or do all 5 have to change?
@freedomworx2 ай бұрын
@nicjgoss7069 all the tunes are the same format, and you can save them all on your computer. So you can choose any 5, from anyone you want, to go in those 5 places. Your DSP5 could have 5 tunes from 5 different people in it at the same time.

@freedomworx not a problem I have an 03 6.0 powerstroke & run he CTS3 with egt sensor lh exhaust manifold. Is there any benefit it running a sensor in each exhaust manifold on a 6.0 just a question? I noticed sometimes my it's don't read correctly on my cts3 I've changed the probe out as well I've noticed. Alot of times it is reading lower than it should I've noticed. Then it goes back to normal. Well what I think is normal. Lol

I think there is a benefit to having one in both sides, but really only in the sense that you can tell if one of the two sensors is bad, or which head gasket just blew 😉

That was great, thank you! I'm off to fill my turdbo with shavings and busted taps...but before I do that... can you explain me why the exhaust was smokier on the higher map? Is this a function of the map or of the EGT?
@freedomworx2 ай бұрын
Smoke and EGTs generally go hand in hand. More fuel equals more heat (EGT), but it also means more smoke, because with more fuel in the cylinder, you are less likely to get a complete burn of all the fuel.

For the nerd explanation of a thermocouple: When you bind two metals together the point at which they merge forms a diode, much like a crystal in a crystal radio. This point is basically a semiconductor junction but unlike other semiconductors has stronger properties . All diodes have all the following properties, but each one is built to maximize one and exploit it.: 1. They conduct electricity more easily one direction than the other. 2. They completely block electricity on the direction they provide resistance in up to a certain voltage threshold. 3. They create a small amount of light when electricity is run through them. 4. They transfer heat from one side to the other when electricity is run through them. 5. When heat is forced from one side to the other they generate a small amount of electricity. 6. When exposed to light they generate a small amount of electricity. 7. Properties 1 and 2 change in threshold based on temperature to an amount based on material. 8. Properties 1 and 2 change based on light exposure. Thermocouples are designed to maximize the 7th behavior I listed, while minimizing the others. They are also designed to have that behavior appear in the most reliable manner possible. Hence, when attached to a voltage source, a known resistor load, and an appropriate electrical measurement circuit, you can read the heat the that the thermocouple is tied to with a high degree of accuracy.
@freedomworx7 ай бұрын
Thermocouples produce their own voltage. Has nothing to do with a resistance reading in the sensor producing a gauge input, like other sensors, is that’s what you are insinuating.
