It's so true. I've been a fan of Tesseract for so long, and their music is such a ubiquitous part of my life at this point that it's easy to forget this band (and genre) are pretty niche.

Tesseract reaches that perfect balance of mindblowing rhythms that groove flawlessly. I guess it can't possibly be easy. Way too many bands try so hard with complex rhythms that they just end up sound messy. Tesseract songs just feel SO GOOD.

Something absolutely incredible about Jays playing is the subtlety he brings like the ghost notes on the snare. A lot of metal drummers are like athletes and human drum machines and what they do is incredibly impressive but also very direct. Jay has a lot of texture to the way he plays.

It amazes me bands like Tesseract and Meshuggah (and many others I'm sure) can remember their songs live (even with in-ear cues). They're so complex. A 4-bar repeating verse-chorus is about my level :) Jay is awesome.

Have you tried it? Even if you don't play - don't discount yourself :) You might be thoroughly surprised at what you are capable of!

You don't pick up a guitar one day and immediatly write a 9 minute technical polyrythmic metal banger. You build to that over many years, with that you build your memory, muscle memory, familiarity with all the concepts and seperate parts. By the time you are writing these types of songs, it is not so crazy and mysterious to yourself anymore as it might sound to a listener. And I don't mean that they are obviously familiar with their own written material, but also all the little tricks and methods that make up these types of songs. They become normal tools in the box, so to speak. Just as a 4 bar repeating verse-chorus is understandable for you (because we grow up with that kinda thing in the west) these polyrithmic parts have become normal to this type of musician over many years. And ofcourse, next to all that... a lot of repetition ;) Just some insight from a metal musician, if that helps at all.

Periphery and Gojira are another couple of bands where I swear the only way to play their songs is just off of feel. You'll melt your brain trying to remember the sheet music for it.

Even the fans have these songs memorize. These dudes also practice more than you could imagine also during the recording process.

Most of these bands start practicing or rehearsing their material like 2 months in advance for a tour. Polyphia mentioned doing that too. It's just very technical stuff, no(t a lot of) room for improv, and they need to be really tight. They're professionals, they spend time to make sure their shows can sound incredible.

I have been learning from Jay for the last few years now and I can without a doubt say that he has become my greatest insipiration as a drummer. His style is right there in the realm of style I always wanted myself, and Jay has blessed the drumming world by sharing his knowledge in such an accessible way that people can learn some awesome philosophies and skills that help take our ability to speak on the drums to the next level. Jay is a great person, and incredible mentor. Highly underrated 😩

22:20 love the alternating headbanging between Amos and Acle lol. Jay is on an insane level of rhythmic and groove interpretation. I'm primarily a guitarist, but I learned one Tesseract on drums and it took so long to figure out his fills and accents, but he does that stuff so comfortably on many songs. Sometimes a pattern feels like it's not gonna make sense, but it lines up in the end. That's also the benefit of using computers to write some of this stuff, as Jay mentioned.

I saw Tesseract on the Sonder tour, and they were and still are BY FAR the best-sounding band I've ever seen live. It's rare that a live situation sounds better than the clinical perfection of a studio cut, but every note was CRUSHING. They really have it dialed; if you ever have a chance to see them live, go get your mind blown.

Jay has been one of my favorite drummers since I first heard Concealing Fate on KZbin - I've been watching for him to show up here. The ways he holds down the underlying pulse amidst the conversation of everything else and the openness of his drumming have been amazing insights for my own practicing (not to mention the left foot groove and how key it is to his playing).
