Quiet honestly mate, I still can't get the 'Diamond Knott' exactly right but it's getting there. I'm not sure how you both maintain your enthusiasm for sailing and encourage our delight in watching. But I'm glad you do. Thanks Pascal and Troy. David P.S. The sailing sequences are great and immensely dynamic. D

I must try and make the soft shackles with the diamond knot. I have the same finds and we sell Amsteel Dyneema. If you guys ever need 3 or 5mm Amsteel on the roll, let me know, am happy to sell it at my cost to you. A trick we use when splicing is to wrap 1” masking tape tightly around the braid and cut in the middle of the tape. It creates a neat cut and makes it easy to splice, no fluffy end. Good winds!

Nice one guys! Question, what would happen if you skip the brummel lock and go straight to the diamond knot? I just made one without a brummel, seems to work fine. I used 80cm of 4mm dyneema and ended up with a 25cm length under the knot, so a 12cm closed shackle length.

@roythomas93762 жыл бұрын
Hello, I’m Roy from Defender Industries. Been following you for years. A suggestion…. Leave 10cm tails after the diamond knot, then bury one tail into the other and then put a few lock stitches in the bury close to the diamond knot, then cover the buried tails with 4cm of shrink tubing. Heat, then cut the tail down to about 3cm. Or… instead of heat tubing you can whip the bury. I learned this from the lead rigger at Mystic Seaport in Connecticut. Matt (the rigger) also handles our splicing services. Additionally, he’s a consultant for New England ropes and Sampson. He likes the buried tail with the lockstitch because the failure point on soft shackles is always the diamond knot. When the shackle is stressed near its limits it is the diamond knot that unravels. He has seen it several times. So the bury, lock stitch, and whip solves that problem. I thought it pretty clever.

It makes for a definite way to easily measure and mark for length if you want it a certain size and under load, keeps both legs the same length so weight is shared. If you think it could be more efficiently skipped, try it out. Might be ok.

They are designed to work with dyneema, and kernmantle would take something else entirely. Soft shackles are strong and light and though a bit fiddly to open. Never require tools and don't seize or chip paint. Highly desirable traits!

Thanks guys, really enjoy your content. Troy's handiness with the lines peaked my interest enough to learn how to eye splice my dynema ridgeline for my hiking tarp. Really happy with how it turned out as i always had a fixed loop in the end for quickly securing around a tree. I'm not sure what I'd used a soft shackle for right now but i want to make one haha. You got me daydreaming about buying a yatch and i've been checking out the small cruisers along the river when i go for a run and train in the park here in Brisbane. It's been devastating to see so many nice boats get flushed out into the ocean. If you had short notice of a flood event, i guess you would have to know of a safe anchorage out in the bay?
@FreeRangeLiving2 жыл бұрын
We don't anchor near rivers when rain is forecast. Even without major floods, debris can accumulate around anchor rides and dislodge anchors. Cats suffer even worse because they can trap along that acts as a debris dam and gains weight fasr
