Freezing Solo Dartmoor Camp in a Vintage Tent!

Hello lovely people!!!
Wow - man alive did I enjoy this camp!!! I literally cannot believe my last solo Dartmoor wild camp was August 2023, that's crazy!! I loved every second of this camp despite the cold but honestly I am just buzzing to get out there again now!
I felt so nervous beforehand but as soon as I walked away from the car I could feel all the nerves just melt away replaced with happy butterflies and a special inner calm that the moors give me.
I'm so sorry I forgot to show you my beers and do my thank yous (sorry Lotti, Sue and Rolf!) - I really was overcome by this camp and just revelled in being out there and living the experience in it's entirety you know? With a bigger tent and more room to film it is definitely more "conducive" for filming when it's dark and freezing outside. My little Cloud Peak hasn't had an outing for ages so that's what I'll be in next time so I'll be able to share more of the after-dark camp with you lol!

Hi Karen, Yes, has been a long time since your last wild camp hasn't it. You mentioned you inadvertently bought another tent and we joked about running out of places to stash such purchases. I have a Saunders Spacepacker Plus from nearly 30 years ago, my first lightweight tent. Turns out it's now a classic, and with modern pegs, proofing and ropes is pretty sturdy. All too easy to think latest is best, not necessarily so. Paul Messner has commented on how his first tent has a very special place in his heart which outweighs the modern tech-egde. Looks like you had a flappy night 🌙 tension is everything, but you survived with only a few bags. Look forward to your next adventure, hopefully not as long as the last one 😀. Cheers Graham

Hi Karen, I loved that sunset time-lapse, well captured. Interesting tent, fair play for giving it a go. It looked rather tight for space. Will you use it again? The meatballs looked nice and tasty.

I absolutely love that tent, it's proper! My old school tent is canvas, so a it too heavy for a wild camp so I'm going to look for one like yours, it's got to be done! :) I might even pair it with a vintage bottle of wine to celebrate its first outing, why not!

Honestly they’re amazing meals, worth the extra weight for ease and yumminess 😍 So glad you enjoyed the video, if you look on your camera there might be a setting for a Timelapse? Where you change it from photo to video etc. worth checking and you need a tripod or selfie stick xx

Yes it kind of is with a zip on the top but great for keeping electrics in so helps prevent batteries from dying from the cold. Which beer do you mean? The Floc one? Such a lovely beer!!! 😍😍

Random question not related to this vid- when you do a full on cooking session, how do you wash up pots & pans etc? Is it just a quick rinse out the deal with it at home? Obviously not much in the way of hot running water on Dartmoor

@1972andyb I usually take a couple of bits of kitchen roll and I usually have a small pack of wet wipes. Little bit of water, use my spork to scrape as much off the pot as possible, wipe out with a wet wipe the dry with kitchen roll. If it’s in the morning and I’ve had bacon I stick it in a nappy sack and take it home. I use nappy sacks for various things, very handy 😂🤣

My dog thought you were talking to her when you were talking to the ponies, she was trying to climb into the tv at 1 point. Shame the tent does not suit you anymore, would it not be ok in the summer? Did you not say in your last video that you used to camp with your friend and it fitted both of you? Glad you still had fun in it though.

You were a bit unlucky to be chilly with the Softie 4 and the Reactor liner. Probably the booze didn't help (sorry) but maybe also you didn't have a properly insulated mattress. Cold from the ground can ruin a good night's sleep even with the warmest of bags.

I have a really good mat (Thermarest Xtherm) I just sleep cold and seem to struggle with circulation. And yes, maybe the booze doesn’t help but I don’t have a skinful 😂🤣😂

@@ksgonewild In that case you could put a thick closed-cell mat under the mattress to boost its R-value as well as some silver foil like that used on windscreens to reflect the heat. Other than that you'll just have to deal with it. I sleep cold too so you have all my sympathy.
