That’s a Hotchkiss Universal, certainly not a MAT49

yes the MAT 49 is similar and use the same 9mm parabellum , but look very different: i shot the MAT49 while i was in the french marine (+ the MAS 49-56 7.5mm semi automatic rifle), this was end 70', just before the introduction from the modern FAMAS who replace both

Not a MAT 49. It's a Hotchkiss. You need to watch Ian over at Forgotten Weapons.

It's not, but there actually *WAS* a specific example of a Hotchkiss used by a service member which had apparently attempted to be converted to 7.65. Note that it never specified whether it was successful as the weapon jammed when the VC carrying it was captured and no one dared attempt firing it, thinking the unusual & uncommon weapon was a Communist Chinese prototype fielded as an experiment. *It's in a war museum...* *Built in Ho Chi Minh City.*

the creator from the make, Benjamin Hotchkiss, comes in France in 1867, launch he's weapons factory in 1875 and decese in 1892, but he's factory continues, and launch the first french machine gun in 1892, adopted by the french army in 1897, improved in 1914: this was the standard ww1 french machine gun, well known as very reliable and accurate...Later Hotchkiss made cars, jeeps, tanks, up to 1969 who was the end of the story...
