French navy helicopter fires guns to stop pirates (March 2010)

The French navy fregate Nivose, taking part in the EU NAVFOR Atalanta mission, earlier this month stopped two vessels off the Somali coast in the Gulf of Aden and arrested their crew members under suspicion of piracy. This video footage was made available to broadcasters via the Council of the European Union.
It's not clear what happened to the pirates filmed in this particular video. It's likely there were taken to the Kenyan port of Mombasa. Pirates have been released on several instances because there is unclarity over where to put them on trial. Kenya, which already holds more than 100 suspected pirates in custody, has been complaining about having to share an "unfair" part of the burden.

I was really touched that despite the fact that these pirates are criminals bent on criminal activity (and not getting into the economic deprivations - over fishing etc... that cause these kinds of things in the first place), the French treated them humanely. I laughed when I saw the baguettes... winning the world over with French food. Vive la France!

@springhill1958 Those two little boats have half a dozen or so armed pirates. Modern cargo/container/tanker ships have maybe 20 crew and are generally unarmed. The pirates usually board at night and can easily overtake the crew. That's how they're a threat to shipping.

A Bravo Zulu to our French allies. I note this is some confusion as to what should be done to captured pirates. Rather than dumping them in Kenya, I would suggest an international court and long prison sentences. Even trials in the capturing nations' own court are preferable to leaving them in Kenya where they cause difficulties for the government and face likely release.

I think it's very honourable that the french navy gave the pirates some food to eat; what a good gesture. Because in the end, I believe that Somali pirates don't take over ships for fun but in order to survive (and better yet, thrive) back onshore. Sure, they might use unorthodox methods (taking hostages) but name me one pirate who purposely shot a hostage. That's not their agenda. We're all human beings, and just senselessly shooting people just shows how much disrespect you have for mankind.

they could have been trying to get information. At one point during a Navy SEAL operation, one of the SEALs treated a captured pirate to some snacks and was very kind simply in order to get him to tell the pirates he was working with to give up their hostage. Once they did, the pirate was taken away just like any other prisoner. Don't mistake kindness for strategy.

Very nice, but this action was about 5 years too late.. Merchant ships were denied the right to carry arms when even a couple of marksmen on each ship would have nipped this piracy in the bud. Secondly, why the "capture" of pirates when a pirate sunk or burnout would have been more just.

The French Navy deserves a big applause. However, the problem won't be solved unless the roots of it are addressed -- the abysmal proverty in Somalia and the lack of a working central government in the Horn of Africa region. Unless this is done, piracy in Somalia and the Gulf of Aden could go on for decades. This is sad for the shipping world.
