The Oedipus Complex is one of the strangest and most counter-intuitive concepts in psychoanalysis. However, through a certain lens it can offer us a guiding narrative about how we come, through the varied experiences of childhood, to have our own distinctive approach to sexuality.

Not too remote and not too strange. It is perfectly understandable. My brilliant therapist actually explained a scenario with my narcissistic mother and how that was Oedipus gone wrong. It was the old story that she sees me as competition - someone who could very easily take my father's attention away from her. My therapist remarked on that after my mother sent me a picture of herself in a blue dress. She hadn't worn a dress in years. But I lost weight and I bought a dress and blue shoes. Lo and behold soon enough she had to do the same. There is a constant underlying - sometimes subtle, sometimes absurdly obvious - competition and my therapist was horrified by that example and explained to me what Oedipus had to do with it and how her brothers and sisters were the same. I hope lots of people use your video to understand this important topic better.

This understanding of the theory does chime with me. Both my parents were quite emotionally absent during my childhood, which has perhaps contributed to my difficulty in expressing desire for other people (the desire is definitely there, but I'm often clueless as to how to show it). Likewise, when my parents separated I can see how that blurred the boundaries of the parent/child relationship, possibly leading to me in future confusing being needed by someone with being wanted by them, with usually terrible consequences for my own self-esteem.

If I remember my psychology lessons from school correctly then the oversimplification I was taught is that with Freud it is always about sex. It is about desire, and pleasure and about what you selfishly want. It is about your Id tells you without a filter. The phase before that where babies put everything in their mouth is also about sex in a way. I cannot really explain that now anymore but I think you got the gist. But you are right yes it is not about performing sexual acts in that sense.

It's very true. Sexuality is such a complex psychological construct and we tend to make it way too easy. The more I discover about myself the more I see how my relationship with my mother shaped me and created a set of patterns which I'm attracted to. It's not really about how she really was. It is much more about how I perceived her back then, at the mentioned age 3-5 yo. A lot of details, small things, good and bad - everything matters. And even though I am aware of patterns (not all yet but many) it doesn't change the intensity of attraction. It feels overwhelmingly magical.

I dated someone who left me because she thought I didn't "feel right". She contacted me some time later, after she found a partner who did "feel right", to tell me that she finally figured out why. Something about her partner reminded her of her dad. At least she figured it out. Most don't. I let those kind of women go. I am not their daddy. Freud studied Greek mythology. His ideas may seem out there by current standards and lack empirical foundation, but many scholars took the study of mythology very seriously at that time. His use of elements of Greek mythology should be interpreted in a figurative manner to give a better insight into his understanding of the human condition, similar to how you would interpret a religious text to gain a better insight into matters of faith.

@milagrosguerreroorlando2730
@milagrosguerreroorlando2730 Жыл бұрын
yes it can! when we talk about the mother or the father, we are talking about roles, you have a nurturing role, and a law role, the first is the one who is "charmed" and "charms" and the other is the one that ruins the game by just existing. In a single-parent household, one parent can embody both roles, or if they had external help, be it a parent, friend, brother, whatever, or any type of close bond, those can act as whatever role. The theory in itself is more complex, but in simple terms, and not going into details, it's about quality, not quantity.

This is one of the most controversial sexual dilemmas out there. Why do some people have such a mixed bag of negative feelings about sex while others practice it as if it were an enjoyable sport? Maybe Freud is right, but even so, it doesn't help, what to do for a child to have a healthy sexual life in the future? No one thinks about it, sexual health in childhood, it really doesn't make any sense.

Yes, he's projecting, but that simply sustains his point that the Complex is universal (in that it was found to be the case in his patients, under psychoanalysis, as well also in Freud himself). But, no - it's not as if Freud examined every single human being on the planet, which I suppose would be the only possible way to prove the Complex's universitality. Still, I find it indeed interesting that it was the conclusion he came to of everyone of his neurotic patients, and even of his own self.

As a counsellor with a PhD in developmental psychology, I think this one is clutching at straws. It feels similar to arguments that the bible is valid, as long as you don't take it literally. The 'echoes' of sexuality may emerge in childhood, but you could have addressed this topic without referring to Freud. Too often his invalid theories are twisted to make some kind of sense, probably due to generations of older psychologists having been schooled in them. Surely we can discuss this topic more productively using modern approaches. People have been confused enough by Freud.

The theory of the Oedipus complex was a complete misunderstanding of the original Greek story. Which was about the inescapable nature of destiny. Not everyone’s secret desire to bang their own mom. I don't think that Freud didn't get the story or the unescapeable nature of it..he just stumbled over the Greek myth while he was working on that theory, if I remember this right, and then found the name Ödipus good enough. And it IS unescapeable destiny, the way he describes it! Not everything that Freud did or said was great, but this theory definitely is. Maybe not at such a young age like 3 or 5, but somewhere between 7 and older, yes, children often experience an unconscious level of desire. They wouldn't know what to do (how to "do it") but they experience it like the urge to go to the bathroom, only they don't even know what it is exactly. So... the case presented in the video could also be interpreted literally in some cases. I wouldn't be surprised. I saw a lot of it when I was growing up. It seems really unhealthy to socially deny the existence of such feelings simply because we are uncomfortable even thinking about it. Parents especially should know this very literal possibility.

Cute and cozy, but Freud is way watered down here. The Oedipus complex is a time of huge emotional distress for a child as he/she encounters sexual taboos for the first time. It's not simply a fun exploration. Plus the opposite sex parent plays a key role and the child's relationship with them is rife with conflict and aggression. None of this really comes out in the video. This looks like it could have come out of a corporate PR department - watered down and easily digestible generalities, sadly without much power or insight. The suggestions for "good enough" parenting are valid enough (not too distant, not seductive), but superficial without an understanding of the deeper logic of the Oedipus complex. I suggest looking somewhere else for a deeper explanation.

This video is really entertaining, you know what else is entertaining. Lyrics to how deep is your love I know your eyes in the morning sun I feel you touch me in the pouring rain And the moment that you wander far from me I wanna feel you in my arms again And you come to me on a summer breeze Keep me warm in your love, then you softly leave And it's me you need to show How deep is your love? How deep is your love? How deep is your love? I really mean to learn 'Cause we're living in a world of fools Breaking us down when they all should let us be We belong to you and me I believe in you You know the door to my very soul You're the light in my deepest, darkest hour You're my savior when I fall And you may not think I care for you When you know down inside that I really do And it's me you need to show How deep is your love? How deep is your love? How deep is your love? I really mean to learn 'Cause we're living in a world of fools Breaking us down when they all should let us be We belong to you and me Na-na-na-na-na Na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na Na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na Na-na-na-na-na-na-na And you come to me on a summer breeze Keep me warm in your love, then you softly leave And it's me you need to show How deep is your love? How deep is your love? How deep is your love? I really mean to learn 'Cause we're living in a world of fools Breaking us down when they all should let us be We belong to you and me (na-na-na-na-na) How deep is your love? How deep is your love? I really mean to learn 'Cause we're living in a world of fools Breaking us down when they all should let us be We belong to you and me (na-na-na-na-na) How deep is your love? How deep is your love? Of course I was attracted to my dad. it went completely wrong ( rejection)and ever since that i am burnt marked . As an adult (21 years) i have major problems in relationships. Always feel like i get abandoned the minute i do something wrong. Can't allow sexuality. very shamefull for me. I never really said that to anyone not even my therapist. but i am still really struggling internely with this topic. maybe someone has some insight regarding that topic. ps: it was not easy to say this .please don't write something hateful i allredy feel ashamed

Hey there I can see why this was an experience that you cannot shake off but might I ask.. why have you not told your therapist yet? Do you not trust them? Are you scared they might reject you? I ask this because in therapy I struggled with things as well. I thought she would laugh at me or ridicule me. I just reply to tell you that a therapist is not there to pass judgement and I have this feeling that you would really benefit from talking about this because this event has in all likehood created a pattern you are working on. Maybe your therapist already knows or suspects. Again without judgement.

I thought that’s maybe why you see so much daddies girls, like little girls who are super defensive and seem to despise their mums existence when around their dad. But if that was the case I haven’t seen that level of behaviour in boys, it’s baffling when you think of it.

Nah. I am not a believer in much of Freud's work although I realize he pushed the burgeoning science of psychology forward. I might find the occasional older woman attractive due to her style and sexuality, but I would bever date an older woman (sex would be fine but I would never date anyone more than a couple years older than I am).

Freud wasn't suggesting that the Oedipal phase in our development corresponds exactly with our preferences in adulthood. Rather, he was highlighting how much of our thinking around love and sex is moulded by the conditions of our childhood.

As is with a lot of these old white men from the past with their physical or mental health models, a lot of them however do NOT account for ALL of humanity. They apply mostly to white men. Therefore this complex I argue is one of them. It’s been proven that many health models, frameworks, and scales of the past that people in the West champion do NOT apply to men and women of colour, rather they apply mostly to white men. This being a model based on an ancient Grecian myth featuring a quintessential archetype of white masculinity tells me you can and should NOT be saying that this is somehow a universal thing.

Is the concept of parenthood different when you have a a skin colour that is not white? Also keep tooting that horn there... people of a non-white skin colour are different.. that will definitely help strengthen the medical bias against you which many try to erase. Because a whole lot of nonsense is going around there which leads to people being treated differently such as the myth that people of colour do not feel the same pain. Also edit: You are confusing culture with human nature.
