I don't know how much the rest of you know about Bushido culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is with cowboys where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw someone over in Bushido code, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

Holy shit...holy fucking shit I don't believe it. This game just blew my god dammed mind. DISCLAIMER:The following rant is not a joke and based on actual events I got very sick my Freshman year of High School and it caused me to have amnesia of my entire childhood (Which is why I can personally relate to Pat) I only had two very vague subtle memories from being a very little kid that I thought were just dreams. One was being terrified of the Wave Race 64 announcer, and the other was playing some shitty Samurai game that was slow but for some reason I had fun with it. I thought this to be a silly dream, but no it was a memory I'd been chasing all my adult life until now. It had a name, it had a place in my heart! IT WAS FUCKING BUSHIDO BLADE! Thank you Zaibatsu! While I'm on this rant I might as well add that because I have said amnesia it feels like I've been watching the Best Friends for literally my entire life. And I wouldn't have it any other way. You guys fucking rock and god damn am I going to try to make it to Magfest to thank you in person.

Two great pains ache again watching this video. Wall of text incoming: 1) More people don't know about Bushido Blade. Not just that they haven't heard about it, but are unaware of the systems. Example: the gunfights you guys had? You can parry those bullets with a sword wielding character by looking at the windup the other character does before shooting and then pressing the opposite button. Counter vertical swings with horizontal, and vice versa. Eventually you get to a point where nobody uses the gun characters anymore because everyone can easily PARRY BULLETS OUT OF THE AIR. Real life super samurai bullshit. To say nothing of two gun characters shooting at eachother and using their own guns to deflect incoming bullets. Shit gets real. 2) Square will never ever give us a Bushido Blade 3.

Fucking. Iaido is a, Samurai martial art, one among the several they learned. Iaido is roughly translated near, "Art of the Draw," and was a self defense system that trained them in being able to draw their sword into a guard, or into a cut swiftly to respond to sudden attacks. Kenjutsu is the standard system for their swordsmanship and their common unarmed martial arts where Karate and the early traces of judo and Jujitsu. Summed up, Iaido is just a minor thing samurai learned, barely complex enough to even think of it as a full martial art.

This may be a rather old video but in it Pat asked why it's called a bastard sword. I can answer that, it's called that because a bastard sword is made so that it can be wielded with either one or two hands, and switched easier than other swords. thus you could call it a "bastard" of the two.

Tatsumi, utsusemi and red shadow can dual weild using the katana Highway man weilds his rapier with the long sword Kaun, gengoro, and tony uemeda can sheath their katanas for Iaito quick draw slashes. Utamaru can sheath with the longsword. To throw dirt it is R2+X To throw your hidden knife is R2+O To pick up a dropped knife is R2 Put the weapon in front and doubletap towards opponent and O for a face stab. Doubletap with X for a hopforward sideslash. Put weapon low and doubletap forward XXO or XOX or OOX for a nice quick 3 hit combo. To hit an enemy that is face down hit R2+X To hit a jumping enemy hit R1+O With tatsumi katana hit back forward O starts his autocombo. To grab and stab depends but it is upclose R2+O. Take Kannuki and he kicks stomach and stabs enemy. Jo longsword will parry with a Jutte and counterstab.

I don't think all levels do this though but the one they were first playing on does. It's a bit wonky but a lot of stuff in this game is so whatever. No. It was a two on one. Mugen tried throwing rolls of grapes or something at him and the dude said that Mugen fights erratic to confuse his enemies, but it shows his limitations as a fighter in the process. He barely traded blows with Mugen at all.

Well it's an Italian weapon presumably made of Italian steel. Rapier has decent reach, almost no amount of start up on its attacks and piercing weapons are more likely to kill. Meanwhile you're using a Katana, a weapon that weighs way more than an equivalent longsword, it's made with Japanese steel which is about a step above depleted uranium in terms of how user friendly it is to work and it's a curved weapon with next to no piercing capability so you've got a big wind up on your attacks. The rapier is super light, super fast and has an unpredictable rhythm compared to even Kodachi. To the swordsmen of Japan, trained in peaceful times in classical swordsmanship, this kind of thing fucks with your ability to fight.

I don't know if you guys have heard of it or not, but there is a spiritual successor to the Bushido Blade series on the ps2 called Kengo. It is katanas only and there are health bars, but the health bars don't really matter for much as a good clean hit will ohko and the combat system is pretty good. It has parries, stances, etc. You can make your own character and move set. Most of the game is set in the dojos, but all in all it is a really good game. I recommend the second one as it seems to be more realistic than the others.

Hara kiri and seppuku are two different readings of the same kanji, with seppuku being the more formal written form, while hara kiri is the more common spoken form. Both quite literally mean "cutting the belly," and so are specifically about that form of suicide.

How you commit suicide in Bushido Blade 1: First your legs need to be gimmped, THEN you're allowed to surrender. They removed the restriction in the sequel. Why do they call it a Bastard Sword: Because it was a sword designed to be used BOTH as one- and two-handed. Dedicated one-handed swords wouldn't have a hilt long enough to grip with both hands, while dedicated two-handers were obviously too heavy to use anything else. Also called "Hand-and-a-half swords", the term Bastard was in the sense of an illegitimate child, due to it's hybrid nature. It might be a bit dorky, but I can't help but marvel at how technically impressive Bushido Blade is for a game of the era. You can tell that the people who made it put a lot of hard work into it, and it seems like it really could have pushed the limits of the technology at the time. The destructible environments, the different weapon stances and the like. What really impresses me is that one level where the wind is represented by having the characters' articles of clothing waver and stretch in the wind. Mind you, this is from a frame of mind of what the technology could and couldn't do at the time.

Indeed. They even had weapon weight physics (hence why Red Shadow fell over wielding the broadsword...it is actually too "heavy" for her to wield effectively). Characters felt and moved differently depending on the weapon you chose.

Oh and the ability to travel between maps is story mode only. If you wanted to that 2p you would have to have the second player join during a match a la street fighter.

The bastard sword (also known as a hand-and-a-half sword) is the bastard child of the one-handed and two-handed sword. It can easily be wielded either way.

Matt technically wasn't wrong about the maps in bushido blade one. The maps scroll only in story mode, but your friend could press start to join in and fight you in story mode.

Bushido Blade is to Soul Calibur what Dive Kick is to Street Fighter,paring away both the majority of the substance and the flash alike to reach the pure essence then allowing everything to be decided with a single strike.

It had a stock market mini-game based on different types of alcohol, a materia system for spells, a nutritional system based on the kind of meat and berries you eat, weapons pulled from the Final Fantasy universe... and you have to track all this across TWO characters, who activated once the other died or returned to the quest hub. It was also the only mode on the Ehrgeiz disc that you couldn't back out of; you had to do a hard reset to stop playing Dungeon Mode. Why? Because lol PS1. ...I may have spent way too much of my life slamming my head against that dungeon. But I will enjoy the hell out of the inevitable Ehrgeiz Fisticuffs episode, whenever it comes, ohgodtheyaren'tgonnadoitaretheykillmenow.

To Pat, the reason it's called a Bastard Sword is because its neither a two-handed sword or a one-handed sword, it can be held both ways, so its considered a "bastard".
