It's supposed to mentally exhausting. You get the jump on your opponent by wearing them down. The Pat v. Woolie duel was an excellent example of this.

All things considered though, The only thing that really sucks about the new artstyle is the character models. The new stages look fine for the most part and that tower stage acually looks pretty awesome. But everything about the characters is pretty atrocious. Like it doesn't have to be stick men like the first game sure, but fucking anything else would have been better than clay fighters. Why not just make them dudes in armor or something? That way you can increase the proportions and detail on the models to fit the overall style change but the audience doesn't have to look at those fucking faces all the time.

KingOfSharks I actually was thinking that if there’s ever a Nidhogg 3, the characters should look like certain warriors based on their weapon, the person with the bow should look like Robin Hood, the person with the rapier should look like a duelist, the person with the broadsword should look like a knight or a barbarian, and the person with the dagger should look like a thief or a thug.

They're are a weird mishmash of too much detail and no detail at all. You have all these layers of lighting and color and limbs moving, but the eyes, pieces of clothing and faces never move besides the movement of the animation rigging. There's movement but no fluidity, it looks like two corpses doing kung fu.

People really do underestimate the power of an appealing art style. The "GAMEPLAY" may be a godsent but people see with their eyes first. Then there's the challenge of being able to stomache what you see while playing. May be a little superficial but the sequel really did test the extremes of style over substance. I personally cannot stand how characters and animation look despite loving the original.

I literally just said that. But that's the reality of it. The first had an art style that was super appealing and gave off a mysterious atmosphere. Other than the victory screens of getting eaten by the Nidhogg, it felt like a otherworldly solemn battle of death. The facelessness and simplicity spoke a lot. But this new art style kinda just makes a joke out of everything the original had. Not only is it not appealing, it betrays what the first game had going for it. I mean you only appreciate something so far in substance until the style is just so distracting it hurts.

The Pax Place map is a reference to Seattle Washington, the city that Pax west takes place in and the sign on the first screen is a reference to the Pike Place sign. The pax level is actually pike place market, a very popular market in seattle and the pax place sign is the "Landmark" there. The level included coffee cups (starbucks) and the fish market there, ending with the Seattle space needle.

The only interesting thing about Nidhogg 2 is how Nidhogg comes from behind you instead of in front of you in the final screen. It goes from your character charging into it's maw in victory to desperately fleeing a duel only to be eaten for your cowardice.
