The following quote by Flemming Rose comes to mind: "When I visit a mosque, I show my respect by taking off my shoes. I follow the customs, just as I do in a church, synagogue or other holy place. But if a believer demands that I, as a nonbeliever, observe his taboos in the public domain, he is not asking for my respect, but for my submission. And that is incompatible with a secular democracy."

This video, once again, shows what a beautiful person you are Frieda❣️You showed yourself very open, honest and vunerable❤You are such a soft-spoken, respektful and kind person. You have shown that over the years in your videos... and the people you deal with on a personal level experience your respectful attitude, your deep rooted knowledge of this way of life that you used to be a part of. I also sense a deep gratitude for your family and the way you were raised. The people you meet can feel all of these qualities, that are far above and beyond the (non-offensive, non- provocative) clothing that you wear. You have such a deep understanding of your roots and your identity now. People feel that, people respect that Frieda. Everyone wants to be liked /loved for who they really are - and I applaud you for the courage of showing your true colors - to the community and to everyone watching your videos🎉

@@FriedaVizelBrooklyn It was! Very much so! This is the first of your videos I've seen, so I'm not familiar with any of the issues, but my impression is that you are are a VERY caring, very intelligent, and very respectful person who cares enough to have chosen to try to explain the Hasidic community to others. That's a wonderful thing! And my first impression is that you do a wonderful job. Your words were so very well thought out. That alone shows a great deal of respect to the community. I've travelled a little, so of course I've entered churches, synagogues, and mosques, and I did try to dress respectfully there and in public places, but I hadn't thought the issue through in depth. What you said about how the need to be respectful doesn't mean you need to dress the same as them really struck me. Of course it doesn't. I'm sure most of them understand it. The might prefer it if we all did dress as they do all of the time, but they probably are realistic enough to know it won't happen, so are probably reasonably content to see that a person has made an effort to avoid being really offensive to them. I think That's how most reasonable people are, and there's no reason to think they are any different. Thank you for going further and explaining how your situation is different than mine as a gentle. I admit that as an atheist I do have some prejudices against all organized religions, but they don't extend to the people who I see as being caught up in them. I believe nearly all people of all backgrounds are good. I like people in general, and I'm interested in what makes them tick. That naturally includes the Jewish faith, and the people in it who have endured so much, and still continue to do so. I will watch more of your videos, and hopefully learn more about them. You have sparked a stronger interest in me. So many things compete for our time, but I will gladly spend some of it with you. Thank you very much for your amazing insight!

From what I see, you always dress in a modern, respectful yet casual manner. Many years ago I was in my hometown, I was picking my grandmother up to take her to church. She was in her 80s, always wore dresses to church, a hat or chapel veil. It was bitter cold and she had put on a nice pair of slacks , loose fit around the leg, she asked me if I thought God would be mad at her for dressing this way in church. I told her He would be happier to have her there than frozen or sick in the hospital. She had a complementary turtle neck long sleeved sweater on, and her below the knee winter wool coat, and wool hat. You are doing your job, nurses were thrilled in the 1970s when we were allowed to wear pantsuit. We didn't have to worry about what people could see if we bent over, reached above our heads etc. Bless you.

So of course there will be questions and I think the discussion is great. People can be true to themselves and their culture by speaking out about what respect means to them. Mainly I wear long skirts and long sleeves and I personally would try to be respectful by avoiding eye contact with religious guys and not hold out my hand when getting change in a shop to respect their boundaries if I’m in a location where there are a lot of people just living their lives and have made a mutual agreement to maintain a religious environment. Once again, you have proven yourself to be beautifully articulate, remarkably sensitive and most of all soul-full in your reflection. Being an insider versus an outsider is seen in many aspects and dimensions in our society. You mentioned the experience of a nurse being identified by her uniform. I have recently retired as a neonatologist where people in the hospital identified me for who I was by my scrubs "uniform with a stethoscope around my neck." How very different it is now when I visit my former intensive care unit out of uniform. I appreciate your thoughtful candor and your emotion. Yes, I think we all code switch to a degree when the situation calls for it, not with maliciousness or pretensiousness rather, out of respect and dignity. I live near many Amish communities. If I were to buy something from them, I wouldn't dress immodestly. I would be respectful. But I do dress conservatively in general. We need more love, respect and understanding in this world. You are the kind of person I admire for your wisdom and loving way of being "you" ! Let those comments roll off you like water off a duck's back!🙂

Thank you for sharing this. You’re so right about the importance and freedom of being your authentic self, as much as possible. I’m so glad that you have been able to build relationships and be accepted and appreciated as YOU. How much more special and meaningful that is. I also like how you turned around people somewhat negative comments into a positive story of the goodness of people. ❤

I live in Canada and am trying to think of a logical enough reason for me to come to NYC so that I can take one of your tours. You seem to have such a beautiful relationship with many many members of the community that you visit. You have obviously made a huge impact on others that you may have been unaware of but that silent impact is so much more authentic than the impact that is made by the biggest explosion. I love your story telling whether it be with Pearl or the shop keeper selling his wares to you.

Aww, thank you. Come down sometime. NYC is a wonderful place to visit, well worth it. I’m biased maybe.

Lol I'm the same. When they have run out of the Eskal pickles here in Sydney which are kosher and from Israel I'm always thinking "if I just catch a flight to Brooklyn I bet they'll have some". You don't need a logical reason. If I was childless, and didn't have responsibilities, the pickles would be good enough reason for me to go .

Seeing your thumbnail, my first reaction was " she's not disrespectful. She knows EXACTLY how to dress so as to not offend while identifying as an irreligious person." I think a frum person seeing a lovely person like you with your refined upbringing on your face, it is somewhat upsetting to see you on the outside. And yes- we want you back. But you explained your position so well, and I think your love reflects and people can really relate to you and your position, and perhaps you can eventually show people how to understand people from the community who have no bad intentions, but who are not made for this environment and who may want to find another way to G-d.

Respect, kindness, menschlichkeit, hesed, ..... Deserving of respect. These are things i see Frieda Vizel encouraging and even embodying. On a level we can all learn from. Most of this comment by t.fischer... is lovely but one problem or actually two - {"irreligious" and "not made for this environment"} Not having the same dress code as members of some parts of the Jewish community (such as not continuing to abide by all of Satmar dress customs) does not make a person an "irreligious person". Nor have i heard anything on this channel to make me think F.V. is "irreligious" - although it's not for me to say. (That is defined in many ways and worth questioning: Who, if anyone, should have a monopoly on how that is defined? And if it were ok why is it mostly customs and "fence laws" not Torah obligations [and also total misunderstandings] that seem to get debated with the most fierce turf battles?) During the weeks of consolation following Tisha B'av the Torah passages read in the synagogues this season include the messages (commandments actually) : not to add , nor subtract, from the laws given on Sinai. The detailed customs of clothing of various communities - altho i am not saying they don't have meaning or purpose in the minhagim of each - but they are not miSinai directly by any means! (Not de'Oraita). It seems - and this is definitely not only in Satmar neighborhoods, that often The shell has become more guarded that what is inside - the fence getting more attention than that which it is supposed to guard - this is not just a problem among the ultra-orthodox, we see it worldwide and in many American political debates, in both Jewish communities and beyond. This is not a small problem. Nothing wrong with trying to learn how to "mend fences" but... more caring what is within them could make a bigger difference! (Let's thank Frieda Vizel for caring and teaching those of various backgrounds more about that!) There is another issue not discussed here and that might be: Who is in a particular neighborhood , with differing customs and why, (other than those on tours or there to specifically work for Satmar people). Some may not know all the customs of their Satmar neighbors, - or they may be working outside in near 100 degree heat, and they may live there, and some even their families may have lived there since before their Satmar neighbors reached their neighborhood.... whose environment is it is a reasonable question. [It might be reasonable to consider that at least in some sense: Both - as G-d has put both there. Can there be mutual understanding asked and found?] I like she [t.f.] wrote: "Yes, we want you back" , yet also (and I don't think it is a contradiction) i imagine Fieda Vizel is already very close to HaShem were she is already!!

Fascinating, as always. I love how thoughtfully you speak and the elegant choice of words. You've definitely shown the beauty of the Hasidic community through your videos over the past couple of years. I understand you're just being your authentic self, and showing respect to the level that is expected and appreciated of outsiders. But it still reminds me a little of one of the things my grandmother used to complain about. She was a devout Roman Catholic, and always hated when the priest would face the congregation during mass as she thought that symbolized the priest was representing God to the people. She preferred the old style where the priest would face the altar, the same direction as the congregation, because she thought that symbolized the priest was representing the people before God. There's something similar there with your modern clothing, a sort of visual demonstration of the fact that you're not trying to portray yourself as a representative of the Hasidic community when you guide tours in the neighbourhood. You're there to work, and although you come from the community and have a wealth of insider knowledge, you're there as a representative of the outsiders in your tour group - and you go above and beyond to try to ensure they're able to respectfully visit and gain a small insight into what makes the community so interesting.
@FriedaVizelBrooklyn9 ай бұрын
Yes very interesting analogy. And I can see why people like your grandma would have a problem with the “priest” not be “one of”, as in, my own being a step apart from the “congregation”. However, that distance gives me a kind of intellectual liberty that I wouldn’t otherwise have, so you win some and lose some.

Thank you Frieda. I started watching your videos a year ago & enjoy them as they are every informative and educational. I grew up in Brooklyn as a teen was very aware of Hasidic community though did not understand it until later in life having Jewish friends & family. I was raised Catholic & also wasib all girls classes when young. Clothing does speak volumes about the person. It's a shame that many don't have respect for others. I truly think the companies of bus tours are in error not informing those who visit as a 'tourist ' how to dress in being respectful to the community. Tourism obviously helps the community financially & there's the downside. I wish you well in your journey. May you stay safe & blessings to you and your wonderful son.

Why would you jeopardize your work to wear a single garment they won’t accept! Please be you…..it’s exactly why you left that world! We love you, respect you and your work here is exceptional! 👍❤️🌹🌹🌹🌹❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

As a satmar chusid, who grew up in Bklyn and who's currently living in the 10950 zip code... I appreciated your videos. I relate so much to your vidoes. I love my life and my community. And it's so fun to watch it thru your eyes! I don't see disrespect at all. Coming to the community dressed appropriately modest doesn't mean wearing the full chassidish style. Showing extensive cleavage and shorts w tank is inappropriate imo. But you always look very appropriate in your videos. Keep up the work. My friends and I REALLY enjoy it.

This was very well done, Freida! To those who would point a finger to accuse, they simply don't understand that you have thoughtfully addressed your stance or perhaps they are just judgmental. When hearing you speak about your visits after covid, it speaks volumes that people have not 'disowned" you. They care about you and yours! I so enjoy each of your videos. To those who would like to criticize you or your choice in clothing (or presentations) I am reminded of one of my mother's favorite sayings. "It's their problem, not yours!"

When I watch your videos, I am struck by your honesty, integrity, awareness, and sensitivity. I have yet to see or hear anything that I would say is a chutzpa. I have wondered about your wearing pants when in the community, but only because it seems incongruent in light of your having grown up there. I am Chareidi in Israel (not Chassidish), and I have three girls "on their own path". In the beginning, when my oldest started dressing immodestly, I wondered how she could feel comfortable exposing herself as much as she did. Doesn't it feel strange? But I guess it feels liberating, both figuratively and physically. Wow, there is so much to each person's story and the story of each family, and really, everyone is doing their best, whether or not it looks like it.
