I think it's great to see long term "year later" reviews and thoughts about gear. They are much more meaningful than the initial release marketing hype when a new product comes out. I bought an R5 around late October after its launch and was lucky enough to get it by Christmas. I was switching systems from my MFT gear to full frame. After firmware updates the camera is an absolutely fantastic hybrid camera from Canon. FINALLY! The stills performance is just awesome and the video performance with Canon Log 3 is now great as well. The camera was poo poo'd, rightly in my opinion, from the beginning for the overheating. Canon did the right thing and released firmware to address some of the issues.

I got involved with photography full time 20 years ago when i retired. After a lot of research, i decided to shoot with Olympus. I was completely sold on Olympus after spending hours at sea photographing whales. When i got back to y hotel, my camera was completely soaked with salt water. I just took the camera in the shower and ran hot water over it for about 5 minutes before drying it off with a towel. The camera still worked like new. Later, I started photographing ballet on a regular basis. I had just purchased my second Olympus camera, the one with their first electronic viewfinder. Unfortunately, when I tried to track a ballet dancer, the viewfinder was completely unusable. It was so badly blurred I could not see the dancer. At this point I switched to Canon and bought the 5D Mark II, then the Mark III, and now I shoot with the EOS R and the EOS R6. I could not be more pleased with shooting with Canon cameras.

@@MrDubicz Ah, interesting. That's different from what I'm running into. I've checked for updated firmware in the past, a couple of months ago, but I'll check again. My issue seems to be a problem with IBIS. Shots with fast shutter speeds that should be sharp end up being super soft with a lack of detail. It's pretty odd and frustrating to troubleshoot. I've seen reports of a very small percentage of R5 users reporting a sensor misalignment that leads to something similar to this. Unfortunately, since I'm not using Canon lenses, Canon support won't even open a ticket for it, and I don't really blame them. I'm going to test with some RF glass today. I too bought a Canon R5 and am a very satisfied customer. My only complaint is the lack of glass to be found in stock. I had to buy an adapter off ebay to use my ef glass. The R5 is a beast! As for those who complain about 8k, what the hell are you thinking? I have 2 top of the line gaming computers that take forever to process 8k files. It's not practical to process longer videos with file sizes that will only lock up your computer. Camera files are out pacing the ability of computers to edit such media. 4k is the best resolution for the majority. Back to my main reason for buying the R5, the pics are on another level with the autofocus. I think Canon has an edge over Sony with the combination of ef or rf glass plus the autofocus. Just can't be matched. The only real complaint is the battery life. You will need to buy extra batteries for videos or invest in a battery grip. I have 6 batteries now due to taking trips on the weekend only to find out that it takes a long time to recharge one. Don't find yourself without a fully charged battery. I'm wating to see what the newer flagship models bring to the table in terms of specs and performance. Going to be an interesting year to come!

Still probably the best camera to date. Even beats Sonys A1 considering prize and especially the lenses (and if you don’t need any specific A1 features, the r5 actually beats it in many aspects from video quality, stable frame rates auto focus etc ). I really like that canon is even improving on it via updates like adding vehicle detecting that just came out for the R3. But as mentioned above, probably even better are the lenses. Those alone are worth getting this camera. The unique ones like the Rf 28-70 f2 or the 70-200 f2.8 which only exist here are probably the best lenses in the market to get. Yes it’s expensive. But for the ones looking for extraordinary quality not found anywhere else, they will find it here. Regarding heat problem I also find that overly exaggerated. I guess some just tried to find something to criticize even if it didn’t make sense. But who is actually able to record 8k raw for 10 minutes when the file size is gigantic? And who record a single cut with 20 minutes? Everyone who actually does will get a dedicated video device like an c70 anyway. Definitely glad getting this camera and after over a year of using it professionally, I actually just ordered a second one..

What is amazing about the R5 is aside from sensor size, it is the only camera on the market as of 2022 that can legitimately compete with the almost flawless performance and imaging quality you would get from a Phase One or RED camera, which cost as much as a new car (such as Chevrolet Cruze). Phase One or RED require little skill to learn and easy to setup, but the size is intimidating and uncomfortable so portability is unfit for the casual user even if can be afforded. May be more geared for a camera crew, and yes, you usually see Canon more often as a secondary camera when the modular equipment is undesirable, and Nikon a close second. Some Nikon DSLRs can give great results, but you may be paying quite a bit more.

As a Sony A1 shooter, I do enjoy how honest and brutal you are in your videos towards any brand and any camera. The disclosures are helpful too.

Do you like your A1?? I’m thinking about upgrading from R5 to the A1
@nazukeoya2 жыл бұрын
@@pdot3972 I absolutely love it. I’ve put it through it’s paces shooting photos in RAW, as well as video in 4k and 8k using the CF-Express cards and it kicks butt. The 8k shuts down after 45 min due to overheating, and that’s with using a grip. The low light capabilities are very good too. I do want to do more astrophotography with it to compare with my previous Sony A7SII, but I’m very impressed all around. A screen that flips front would be cool, but I’m looking at getting a Ninja external recorder anyway so it’s not a big need. Soon I’ll be shooting 50MP shots of the surface of the sun with an h-alpha filter, so that’s going to be sweet. The camera simply does everything great, it’s the 007 of cameras, really.

fully agree on the AF. Who cares if the mechanical parts of the camera are better? It lets me invest more time and energy into the art of photography. More accurate AF also means taking and reviewing fewer copies of the same shot because some might not be in focus

Great video! Do you still shoot with the Canon R5 or have you switched to a different camera? I currently have a 77D and want more out of the video but a bit put off from the fact that the R5 still has a 30-minute recording limit. Just wondering if this is a big issue for you if you still shoot with the R5?

The R5 one year review video is a great video indeed. I felt I was receiving good information, the music choices were very nice, and I felt good passion coming from you explaining what you thought about it. Keep these videos up my brother!

I own an R5 since the very beginning. Price that time 4500€. I would by this model again today if needed, the price is quite dropping due to the arrival of R5 Mark II. I'm shootimg 4k video only, I don't need 8k.And you need a powerful computer to edit in 8K. I never had regrets buying this camera. Just the lenses... very pricy too. So I use my older EF-lenses with the adapter and it is fine. Firmware updates are making the R5 more complete, just hating that 29:59 minutes limit. Maybe Canon will do a miracle.

Great review Jared. I brought the R5 earlier this year after watching one of your previous videos and really pleased with the camera. I have seen the overheating warning when shooting at 100FPS in hot weather but its not a major problem. Cheers Keith

Bought the R5 yesterday. Got it set up and tried it out today on some sea gulls. Main issue is the start up lag time of the electronic viewfinder. What I mean is when you quickly raise the camera to shoot something, there is such a delay in the viewfinder coming to life that you miss the shot. So, let's say you're shooting sports and moving to another spot or just not much happening in front of you. Then you see something about to come into play. You quickly raise the camera to your eye and all you see is black for a split second until it lights up. But in that split second, you missed the shot. In shooting my 1DX or any DSLR, this is never a problem. Very frustrating. It doesn't look like you can keep the viewfinder on either. Not that I would want to because of battery drain. Now what?

I have been a Nikon shooter since the mid 80's. My last purchase was a Z7II last spring. Great sensor, wonderful pictures, soso autofocus.... Had all my gear stolen a few weeks ago. 1st time looking at Canon and Sony and can see where I will likely not be a Nikon shooter again. Thanks for the great video, have watched many of them. The R5 is looking very tasty... I wish they would get 3rd party glass, same with Nikon. Don't want to carry adapters if I don't need to.... I have become spoiled by the amazing technology we have....

i love the R5 after upgrading it from the EOS R . I dropped the 24-105 F4 with the R and started looking at RF glass . the problems is when you have a mix of RF and EF glass and changing then in the fly is a pain unless you have several adaptors to keep on the EF ones LOL so RF28-70 was my first WOW love it. RF70-200 F2.8 second . RF100-500 OMG this is ace to focus at 1.2mtrs when at 500mm gives a beautiful image (IMO ) next the RF100 Macro and later either the RF15-35 f2.8 or RF14-35 F4 Ive got to wait for cash but also to find out how good the F4 is . and then im done well at least till a second hand RF85 F1.2 LOL but I dont need that just want

People need to write to Nvidia and amd to complain to have hardware accelerated support for H.265 10bit 4:2:2. It needs to be a group effort. Gamers don't need that format. Scientists don't need that format. Crypto miners don't need that format. We do. If there is no demand, they won't add it.

What sort of ambient temperatures are you shooting in mate , this is a point most reviewers rarely mention, in an air conditioned studio its probably better , if you are shooting in a warm/hot climate , how will it go ?
@onlysublime3 жыл бұрын
@@mikldude9376 if in hot weather, 8k,4khq, and 4k120 will overheat after half an hour of recording, 4k cropped mode will get you near 4khq quality but it will never ever overheat. Regular 4k will not overheat either. And to remove worries, there is a commercial mod where they replace the heatsink of the camera for $400. That will double recording times and halve recovery time. I've never had overheating problems but I plan my shoots well.
