Let me be super duper clear. I use "secret" and "photography hack" as a way to try and get people to understand they need to stop looking for the "shortcut" to better images. In reality, this video is the shortcut, it's giving you the tools aka the "secrets" to hacking your photography so you take control of everything. The quicker you realize you are in control of your settings, the better your photography will be. I made this video to grab beginners and photographers who get sucked in to videos that promise the world but can't deliver the basics and fundamentals. Now that you're hear, I hope you learn a lot from this video.

Rich Formica you just have to accept that f-stops are different than ISO and shutter. Each is a stop but every other number doubles. 1, 1.4, 2, 2.8, 4. 5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22
@DobyxRC5 жыл бұрын
Could a person (who is shooting in RAW) taking pictures indoors deliberately under expose a shot to gain either a faster shutter speed or a lower ISO, then fix it in Lightroom later? Would the processing of light room inhibit the pictures quality in the same way as if you were to use the Settings in the Camera?
@Ormathisen5 жыл бұрын
@@richformica3033 : Normally you have to double the number but since aperture is round and there is some math involved that I will try to explain it in a simple way. You will have to think like this : When you are at f1 and want to reduce the circle to half the size, f2 would be logic. Instead you have to think of this reduction as the square root of 2. This is 1.414. A new increase would logically be 4 but again you would need the square root of a number. This time 4, which is 2. Next is square root of 8 (f2.8), Square root of 16 (f4), square root of 32 (f5.6) etc. This was a simplified version so I hope it was understandable.

Jared, you are such a great teacher. I have tried to get into photography since I was about 12 when my Uncle bought me my first Pentax K1000 camera and always ended up just giving up. I am in now in my 50s and I purchased your FroKnowsPhoto lessons back in 2017 and LOVE THEM. You can teach an OLD DOG new tricks. Visualizing does make a difference!! I love your teaching methods. Please keep making these kinds of videos. And Yes I am old enough to have actually have watched Mr Rogers when he was doing the shows!! I need that kind of explanation for Photography!! LOL Thanks

Thank you Jared for your time that you have given up too explain the very basics of photography. As someone that has been around photography all my life, it is my main hobby or passion. But due to a MVA that left me in a wheelchair and suffers from a minor brain injury, I have forgotton a lot about how to set up my camera. The way you teach with humor and visual aids, makes it easy for me to retain the imfomation. I am not saying other photo you-tubers are not good, but it is your style that has made you my go to photo you-tuber. It is also this style that has gotten you too 1 million subscribers and will continue to get you more. So thank you again for your awesome retainable videos and keep up the great work. O I just bought the new fuji xt-30 with the 18-55mm kit lens and the 26mm f/2 prime. So right now I am in a state of imfo over load trying to learn a new camera. Cheers for now.

I do motorsports photography as a hobby, It was Jared who helped me understand exposure without it I would never have been able to take the photos I do today. One thing I find is to let the photo you want dictate the settings then build the exposure. So for instance, if you want a shallow DOF, start with adjusting the aperture then work on your stops. If you're like me and do a lot of panning shots find the shutter speed you want and dial in the other settings after. I've been a big fan of Jared as I never "stop" learning from the guy.

It’s great to see you doing these types of videos. I hope it helps many folks advance in this hobby. One thing I recall that confused me was that I saw larger f-stops meant a smaller shutter - wrongly, I assumed they were larger because people would omit the “f/#” bit. Later knowing that it’s the denominator and not the numerator that’s often mentioned made that clear as day for me. Anyhow, for someone reading this, the reason 2.8 is wider than 5.6 is because it’s really f/2.8 and f/5.6. I was tripped up for a while on this one when I first started with photography.

A camera with manual dials and aperture ring on the lens is the perfect way to teach the fundamentals of photography to students. Easy to visualize this on a Fuji X-T3, or an old Nikon FE film camera. Seeing the dials helps immensely with students. Another cool thing to do is to set the camera to bulb and set the lens to different apertures and let the students see the iris close down to the different apertures. They see the iris close down and will understand that a higher f-stop lets in less light visually. Another lesson is to take the lens off of the Nikon FE and fire the shutter at different speeds to show them how it works, better to do this with a non digital camera to keep dust off your sensor. With physical dials it is easy to go 2 stops added here, 2 stops subtracted there, a very tactile way of learning photography.

I was lucky. My first photography teacher in College stressed this math. We even had to shoot an entire roll of film, where we started with the "perfect" exposure,. Changed the aperture 1 stop going up 3 stops and down 3 stops from perfect. Then did it again changing the shutter speed the same way. I shot the small waterfall near my apartment complex. Not only did I learn how the exposure triangle worked, both intellectually and artistically, but I stumbled in the slow shutter speed make water falls look amazing.
