From Ancient Greeks to Russian Annexation | Crimea's Forgotten History (Part I)

Күн бұрын

The Crimean Peninsula has a long, though, somewhat forgotten history. From Iron Age migrations of the Taurians (or Tauri) and Scythians, to Greek colonization, Ottoman suzerainty, the Russo-Turkish Wars, annexation by the Russian Empire in 1783, the Black Sea Fleet, WWI, mutiny onboard the Potemkin, and the Russian Civil War. At various times, people from Crimea tried securing their independence, such as with the establishment of the Crimean People's Republic in 1917 or the Crimean Regional Government just a year later in 1918. Often, however, they were caught between struggles by greater powers, like the Whites and Reds (i.e. Bolsheviks) in the previously mentioned Russian Civil War.
Of course, this is just part of the story and in PART II we'll further explore the Crimea's history in the 20th and 21st centuries.

⚠️ NOTE: Some of the information presented in this video has changed following Russian military action. Missiles, air strikes, and shelling have targeted Ukrainian military positions and infrastructure, Russian troops are in-country, and explosions have been reported in Kyiv, Kharkiv, Odessa, and other Ukrainian cities. As the situation continues to evolve in Ukraine, we will provide updates on the channel in time.

Thanks man; yeah, it's always difficult balancing what to include and not in a video, but we are planning to revisit Crimea's history in future videos, which more than likely will include a proper episode on the Principality of Theodoro.

Fantastic video man 10/10 your pronunciations are getting better especially when you pronounce maciej sulkiewicz. I will confess i did learn a lot of new stuff considering the addition I have over Eastern Europe 😂😂 if you see under BBC news, etc you will see bunch of uneducated people who have no idea what’s going it’s hilarious

Oh, thank you so much 🙌; pronunciations can always be somewhat hit or miss I think...hahaha, but glad you feel they're improving! We tried plenty of new things in terms of style/editing in the video that I think probably will become the norm in our videos going forward. The timing, though, was not planned; just crazy everything went down exactly when it did.

@@GhostCountries I turned off the TV and I think I'm better. Let's hope the situation will stop getting more and more horrible soon, I guess... Anyway, it was really a great video! I've learned some new details, especially about the Crimean People's Republic. I very much liked the mentioning of Maciej Sulkiewicz and the Lipka Tatars. Although, I have to add that only the initial of several waves of Tatar settlement in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, which gave birth to the Lipka community, was 'shamanistic' (or tangrist). The latter, more significant ones (like the followers of Khan Tokhtamysh fleeing Timur) were Muslim and so are the Lipka Tatars to this day.
@GhostCountries
@GhostCountries 2 жыл бұрын
True, we didn't mean to make it appear like that in-episode; Maciej (Suleyman bey / Mammad bey) Sulkiewicz and the significant majority of Lipka Tatars who preceded him were, unquestionably, Muslim. Honestly though, Sulkiewicz led quite an interesting life - maybe yet another candidate for a ghost biography - having served in China during the Boxer Rebellion, the Russo-Japanese War (specifically the Battle of Mukden), and WWI.

I think Crimea is an interesting location historically & in light of the war (which is still ongoing) it just looks like two countries fighting over the land of a third. I think the video wasn't bad, but a lot was skipped up until WW1 and some of the framing is a bit incorrect the more you look into the history of the Crimean Khanate. So for example saying they were an Ottoman protectorate while not untrue isn't exactly correct either, with the diplomatic ties often being compared a bit to the Polish-Lithuanian-Commonwealth with some differences, such as the Ottoman sultan formally acknowledging the Crimean khan as the successor to Ghengis Khan & thus as ruler of all land in the steppes. Crimea formally leaving the Ottoman empire had less to do with them disliking self-determination as it did with them losing that status + Ottoman protection against what was the writing on the wall with Russia militarily expanding southwards.

Crimean Tatars are Kipchak, together with Cumans who ultimately ended up in Pannonia under Hungary. Groups like the Huns or Bulgars ruled, but largely never settled as inhabitants.
