How did Indonesia got its independence? In 1799 the VOC went bankrupt. After the Napoleonic Wars and the British Invasion of Java (1811) the Dutch state took over its overseas possessions. From 1816 the Dutch East Indies was declared. It is here the history of the Dutch East Indies begins. The Dutch implemented indirect rule to govern the Dutch East Indies. Also the cultivation system (cultuurstelsel) was applied which came down to ruthless exploitation of Javanese farmers. Later this system was replaced. Over the course of the 19th century the Dutch undertook many bloody colonial wars to pacify the Indonesian archipelago. From 1900 the Dutch implemented the ethical policy (ethische politiek) to improve the welfare of the local population. In 1942 the Japanese conquest of the Dutch East Indies took place. Indonesia during WW II was under Japanese occupation. After Japan surrendered the Indonesian War of Independence (Politionele Acties) started. In 1949 the sovereignty transfer (soevereiniteitsoverdracht) took place. Indonesia thus became independent in 1949, although the Indonesians had declared themselves independent in 1945 by Sukarno.

We Indonesians stand firm by our proclamation of Independence on 17 August 1945, just like how the Americans say they got Independence on 4 July 1776 (even though Britain recognised their independence much later in the 1880's during the treaty of Paris) hahaha

Well, mostly the fairly recent stuff, but I like anything that's relatively in depth (and of course, not blatant propaganda or biased) Guess my goal is more to understand the underlying "rules" than knowing the details, even if detailled is way better than just an overview. To give you an idea, my favorite historical channels are TiK (oh boy, so good), TheGreatWar/TimeHistoryGhost/WW2 network (great all around), then Historia Civilis, Invicta for the antique stuff (both do their research), and I guess you could add channel like Metatron, Tod's Workshop, etc, to the list for the medieval era (but more hand on/experimental). I watch stuff like "Kings and General" or "The Armchair historian" too, but dunno, not all that interesting in the end ? Seems like they churn out videos just to make them sometimes, so eh. You seem to have an interest in colonial history of East Asia, though, and as a French myself, I kinda liked the ones on Indochina. So yeah, I don't have any particular demand/specific taste, the relatively obscure stuff is pretty interesting.

It's a bit baffling because there actually Indonesian historians who properly documented this period with their own historiography. Ong Hok Ham for example, he did a well-documented research in 1982 about the political scene before the fall of the Dutch East Indies. Also, Petrik Matanasi from Tirto.id covers this era a lot on his articles. Meanwhile, an actual concrete source on this matter came from the American leftists from the Cornell University. Both George McTurnan Kahin and Benedict Anderson has done great service to construct a proper Indonesian historiography, without either Dutch or Indonesian Military biases. But yeah, the watered-down version made by the Indonesian Military, used for the 12 years-long educational purposes, leaves out too much. I only learned about Soetardjo's petition in my university years, and also about Hubertus van Mook's deeds before the Indonesian National Revolution.

3:20 Budi (boo + dee) Utomo (oo + to like in "top" + mo like in "mop") means: BUDI is good deeds/ good ethic/ good behaviour. UTOMO is Javanese language for UTAMA in Indonesian language or first in English. So Budi Utomo is like "good deeds/ behaviour is the first/ the most impirtant" or "man/ organization of man who put good deeds/ behaviour first/ on top of everything" or like "the organization/ the fraternity of good deeds". I'm Japanese and we know we kicked Dutch out of Indonesia and ruled Indonesia for 4 years and trained Indonesians how to fight, and then after WW2 when the audacious Dutch came back to rule Indonesia again Japanese soldiers fought along with the Indonesians. All the fire arms used for the Indonesian Independent war were Japanese made. There is a cemetery for the Japanese soldiers who fought the independence war in Indonesia. Dutch accused such Japanese soldiers actually. Also we don't really think Indonesia as colony because we were just there for oil and wanted to train the Indonesians to get independent so that they can export oil to Japan in the future. After all the reason Japan went to Indonesia was that Dutch stopped any export of natural resources from Indonesia to Japan due to ABCD block.

@@opensesame8888 correct me if i'm wrong but to my knowledge (at least from what i've been thought from school and by my ancestors), Japan has exploited indonesia in many ways during the second world war with "Asian Brothers" propaganda. For starter, Japan obviously went for the resources, and the men. Japan trained indonesian men and _teens_ to fight for them in WWII. Japan also enslaved the people of Indonesia to build rails and roads for their advantage, and it's called the "Romusha". And I've also heard that the education system in Japan denies any of the things I just mentioned, along with several warcrimes Japan did during WWII such as the raping of Nanking, Korea, China, and many more, and refuse to teach them to new generations as they claim it to be "controversial". No offense by the way, I'd love to hear a perspective from a native Japanese

Also maybe you can do a video about the most misunderstood figure in both our nations' historiographies: Hubertus Johannes van Mook Dude got bashed by both Dutch conservatives and Indonesian nationalists, the former for being apparently too pro-Indonesian, and the later for being apparently the second coming of Herman Williem Daendels. I already read Yong Mun Cheong's book about his deeds from 1917 until 1948. But if you wanted, you can also read "Een Vrij en Gelukkig Indonesië" by Tom van den Berge since it's only released in Dutch.

Marshall plan is an (war reparation) aid package.. Same like disaster aid.. It is a huge money, that many country at the time desperately need to repair their economy. @@HistoryHustle But wasn't the Netherlands seen as a trustworthy ally, and dependent on the USA to rebuild the country (implying the us has some control over dutch affairs)? Wouldn't Indonesia still indirectly be under american influence, even if the dutch stayed in power in Indonesian? Because in the end-even today, Indonesia although prosperous is still indirectly victim to exploitation by the west, with large amounts of raw material still being extracted from its land. It still remains a victim, this time from american and western neo-colonialism

It also the main reason why the US finally threaten to stop Marshall Plan aid if Netherlands did not sign peace treaty with Indonesia.

Well articulated! The Indonesians didn’t really see the Japanese as their enemy despite the atrocities committed by the Japanese army. The Indonesians were fighting the Dutch for four long years (1945-49). The Indonesians also fought the Japanese and also some Japanese troops supported the Indonesians and fought against the Dutch. Like the Dutch and the Japanese fought for control and the Indonesians fought both of them. Truly complicated but the Indonesians managed to form their own country of Indonesia and unite all the islands in the archipelago. Fascinating to learn a lot about the war of independence of Indonesia. After that, Soekarno dealt with the communist party (PKI) of Indonesia and also the Islamic State of Indonesia (Darul Islam) as well as the Republic of Maluku and the Netherlands New Guinea. Eventually Indonesia united former colonies of the Dutch East Indies and reached its current peak in 1962-1963. In the mid-1970s, Indonesia invaded the Portuguese Timor but in 1998-1999, East Timor gained independence after Soeharto stepped down. Now, Indonesia’s land area is the exact same as the former Dutch East Indies.

You just have to search on Google that Indonesia paid as much as 65 billion guilders to the Dutch for sovereignty because the Netherlands needed funds to reconstruct the Dutch state because of World War 2 in accordance with the KMB agreement or a round table conference held in deenhag between the Netherlands and Indonesia ... at least just ask your conscience, that your nation is nothing more than a robber and a sincere apology for the plunder and slavery for 3 centuries so that you and your nation at least still have dignity and a conscience, at least we are now alive. In modern times it is easy to get proof ... and in order to satisfy your curiosity, Indonesia's final payment to the Dutch is on the people's advisory council as the Indonesian government's annual responsibility for public money ... that's the proof, I wish you a happy life.i dont know how musch exactly the number is but as far as i can remember its around + 2000 that fines is done..

The requirement to be independent is to have a flag, people, and acknowledgement of many countries. At that time, Indonesia had gained acknowledgement in 1945. Dutch refused to acknowledge it, but it didn't matter. 1945 is our year of independency. Netherlands even admitted their mistake and officially acknowledged in 4 September 2008 that Indonesia was independent in 1945. If even our ex-colonizer admitted that, then, why can't you? Are that brainless?
@s21b0b
@s21b0b 3 жыл бұрын
@@rachelciel3330 @Rachel Dewinata well that means gaining acknowledgement was never the matter. The matter is about when Indonesia was declared free and independent for the very first (and definitely the only) time on 17/8/1945. Correct. Tan Malaka himself was driven out by the Dutch since 1923, and he disapproves with Muso's idea on the Prambanan Conference in late 1925. Unfortunately, some sporadic uprisings still occurs from mid-1926 to early-1927 and quickly nipped in the bud by the Dutch. And that's how the whole 1926 Communist Uprising actually went by.

Could you do a video on the Indonesian Killings of 1965-1966? They aren’t very well known outside or inside Indonesia as they’ve been surpassed and forgotten Basically there was a communist uprising in Indonesia that was brutally surprised by the military who then went on reprisal killings of anyone suspected of being a communist. Anywhere from to 500,000-1,200,000 civilians being killed including ethnic Chinese who were suspected communists. A top secret 1968 CIA report stated that the killings “rank as one of the worst mass murders of the 20th century, along with the Soviet purges of the 1930s, the Nazi mass murders during the Second World War, and the Maoist bloodbath of the early 1950s." With a report like that it amazes me the killings aren’t more widely known though they were repressed by Suharto, Indonesia’s dictator for three decades, and even by the current Indonesian government so it isn’t that surprising

Meskipun RI saat itu dikatakan harus masuk persemakmuran dimana Ratu Belanda adalah pimpinannya, tapi jelas itu sudah pengakuan kedaulatan. Even the casualties of dutch increasing each day.. more strategic placess were blown up by the guerrilla fighter.. and all of those facts was written by so many dutch expert historian.. (its good to know that there are still honest historian in netherland).. Thats what made general spoor decided to carried out the second operation with the code name of operation kraai.. it just because the first operation simply FAILED .... OPERATION KRAAI : And what happen after operation kraai.. according dutch perspective it was a SUPER MEGA MASSIVE successful military operation.. which in actual reality it became a SUPER MEGA MASSIVE DISASTER for dutch military, they can't even pacified a smaller area which they got from operation product.. let alone with the additionall area which they got from operation kraai.. and moreover dutch military again and again only able to secure urban area.. while rural area, contryside, jungle etc were still controlled under guerrilla fighter.. (just like a donkey who fall to the same pitt twice) Instead of turning the conflict into a smaller scale.. the SUPER MASSIVE MEGA genius general spoor make it even bigger... now he has to pacified a whole java island.. because all of indonesian soldiers who were already withdrawn because of renville agreement were sent back to their original post... WHAT WAS HE THINKING..?? failed to pacified a smaller area.. and hoping could able to pacified a larger area??? But yeaa.. whatever.. he was not our general anyway... Btw the aftermath of operation kraai was a peak point for dutch military casualties.. and all of those facts was written by so many dutch expert historian.. But however.. back to dutch perspective.. after the operation kraai.. indonesia just begging international community help... and blamming america for the failure to destroy indonesian resistence in one blow.. and suddenly the history jump out to the UN resolution for independence transfer.. without knowing.. where the hell was roem royen agreement gone to??? haha what a naif...

If the Dutch rule the indigenous people justly without adding white superiority complex attitude they would have not revolted against them. I think the Indonesian people (before they were Indonesian) were used to live under the rule of a monarchy (sultanate) so no problems there. My country is still a part of British commonwealth and we are fine. The Dutch was too greedy.

I have though that if no Marshall plan. Dutch really cannot free take all over dutch indies once again, TNI has formed, nationalist movement on its peak. Even Ten fifteen years Guerrilla will not enduring TNI and the republican supporter that will fight at all cost. And fight will cost lot of money for Netherland goverment. How much operation again to take down guerillas. My opinion the root is from Dutch discrimination between indigenous and non indegenous really takes deep scar to many Indonesian, and the guerillas will not stop quickly at that time.

Interesting but that's just a history that we Indonesian never forget, however Indonesia 🇮🇩 still loves Netherlands 🇳🇱 no matter you like it or not but the fact is now we need each other, Despite the bad side of the colonial era, I really hope that the Dutch will teach and change the main language of Indonesia to Dutch as a language that must be understood and as the mother tongue of Indonesia.

Unfortunately they only colonized and rotated the economic cycle of Europe without leaving knowledge for Indonesians such as dutch language, culture, and religion. they also did not build many typical European buildings here at that time.

Go back to your history books and archives, Mr Historian. You missed the most important event in Indonesian history if you want to speak about Indonesian independence. I am going to help you: the Youth Pledge of 1928. In 1928 youth groups from all over Indonesia came together and declared: we are one people: the Indonesian people. We are one nation: the Indonesian nation and we have one national language: we choose Malay to become the Indonesian language. This united the nation and was the spiritual birth of Indonesia. Once this happened the writing was on the wall for the Dutch (who unfortunately could not read and forced us all to sacrifice lives, time and money) and 17 years later was the birth of Indonesia. Yes, the Americans helped us, God bless them but had we not united and fought so hard and so long and conducted extremely good diplomatic lobbying, they would not have helped us. You give a lot of space talking about Japanese atrocities but what about Dutch atrocities which were far more than what the Pemda’s did? Since you created this vlog, your own historians have exposed Dutch atrocities during our struggle for independence and you need to update this vlog if you want to talk about atrocities. Start by reading The Burning Villages of General Spoor. Tell us about how the Dutch would simply round up 70 Indonesians and shoot them, about how Dutch troops tortured Indonesians - and these were not one off events. They happened on a weekly basis - all covered up by the military and civilian government in the Indies. And that is not yet talking about centuries of atrocities in Aceh, the Moluccas, Java, West Sumatra - the list goes on and on. As a Dutchman you really need to show some sensitivity in creating vlogs about Indonesia because you are in the worst position to do so. As an Indonesian, my advice to you is redo this vlog, do more research about the Youth Pledge of 1928. Also about how unlike most former colonies we did not take the language of the colonizer as our national language but how we deliberately engineered our own Indonesian language and culture. Why is that important? Because it unified us and helped create an Indonesian identity which is why we succeeded in throwing out our colonizers and in remaining one country. until today, Finally, you probably do not realize how you sound but in this vlog you sound like it was actually the United States that beat and drove the Netherlands out of Indonesia. No, sir it was Indonesia that did so through its fighting and it’s diplomacy. You sound like you cannot bear the thought of having lost to the Indonesians, as though we were not worthy opponents to you but it’s all right to have given in to the United States. Well look at Ukraine. It’s also helped by the United States n the EU but it is doing the fighting. We Indonesians defeated you and you deserved to be defeated because for centuries you stole our land and resources and you treated our people heartlessly - but you know what? We have forgiven you. Even in the Banda Islands Dutch visitors are treated graciously and with warmth and kindliness. Just do not try to shove biased and badly researched history down our throats.
