As a psychiatrist and professor at Harvard Medical School and the Director of Research at the Department of Psychiatry, George Eman Vaillant M.D. has a lot of duties. To add to them, he has been responsible for the Grant Study, the longest longitudinal study of human development ever undertaken. Since 1938, this study has been keeping a very close eye on 200 diverse men.
One of the men, Godfrey Camille, was particularly interesting. Emotionally crippled and lonely as a youngster, Godfrey was accustomed to exhibiting negative coping styles like hypochondria, narcissism and displacement. All of these emotional issues took a toll on him in life, making it difficult for him to truly connect to others. However at the time of his death, he was 82 and in the middle of an active game of squash. At the time of his death, he was a retired medical doctor with his own practice, a devoted husband and an exemplary father. His memorial service was packed with mourning friends. His children described him as a man who lived a very simple life, full of very rich relationships.
Watch the TEDxAmsterdam talk by George Vaillant and learn what brought on this huge change in the personality of Godfrey.

This talk is quiet and simple, but it says much more than a lot of talks with pictures, charts, and sound effects. I'm sure I'll be thinking about how to integrate this wisdom into my life.

The first word in the subtitles is incorrect. George actually said "tachtig" in Dutch... which means 80 (year's old)... .Linking to the theme of that years TEDxAmsterdam. You pronounce it as something like: Thagggtag (harsh g). :-) An American could never pronounce that easily... he made it sound like tactuh... To correct the first word in the subtitles: he did not say doctor... he said 80. His age at the time. Brilliant talk. Wise man. Kind spirit. A must watch.

Why would it? It's being read like you would a boring term paper to a class and it has no sense of conviction and the delivery is utterly monotone and pointless. Yes, such presentations really make great Tedx Talks! NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!

@@RovingRoy - It may be a style/taste thing. He did not need any theatrics because the emotion and conviction were in his voice. He manifested his love and admiration for his subject through his words and their delivery. Utterly captivating.

“Take love inside, and not evaluate it first?“… Sorry, but I may evaluate it to be sure it’s not hypocrisy in disguise first.

The Ecology of Imagination in Childhood by Cobb f.i. is, of course with its own flaws, more insightful in this field, though I mostly agree with the comments on intimacy and connection by this retired university-member.., missing a bit more clear, mind broadening eco-social parameters by the way, tnx

No, George, God is love. And a touch from Jesus is really what one needs to experience a complete change of their life.

8:31 The researcher acknowledges the profound spiritual experience is what changed this man, but is bound by 20th C skeptical bias to doubt that anything “real” happened to the man. This skepticism weakens the bridge to wholeness he is trying to build to his audience. The Objectivity myth of 20th C logical positivism is a failure.

This study was about men. I wonder how the results would compare if the study included women and fluid gender.

"911. What is the emergency?" "I'm being bored to death by this Tedx Talk!!! Please send paramedics to revive me." This was about the most lack-of-conviction, forced, and utterly boring/monotone presentation for Ted Talks that I've ever seen. If I was at this presentation, I would've drawn a chalk outline around that presenter!
