It's best to use a protective coat over paint, like modge podge. Just to keep the paint from chipping. It's something i always do when i paint something.

Ooh, advice for drawing on top of paint: layer of a sealant, and watercolour pencils. The watercolour works well under paint and sealants, it doesn't yellow or get oily like other kinds of pencils can.
