With all those dust storms flying around, it'd make sense to me to have a "sand lock" for your living quarters, so your engineer doesn't bring too much sand into the comforts of his home. We tend(ed) to do the same with snow, mud and the related wetness here in Norway (when outside of modern/urban areas ofc).

I'd say a compromise on the landing gear for the crane is acceptable - use them for more challenging loads, but first design a set of folding booms for them rather than a simple downward piston. It'll widen the base and give a proper visual indication that the vehicle's locked down and stabilized.

38:27 'Pallet System' Go literal. build a 10x10 small grid platform and then build panels around the edges. Then just dump your items in there. Build a shelf system inside your warehouse and build a forklift to grab the pallets, lift them into their proper spots and push them in for long term storage. Then, when people come around asking for a particular item, just grab your forklift, pull down the pallet and away you go!

39:53 Advanced rotor. Small grid rotor part. Place the rotor in the floor facing upwards. Sink the rotor part down (-11cm?) and build a 5x5 small grid platform on top of it. Align the height of the small grid so that it's even with the floor, and then you can build small grid within large grid and still have everything line up. Plus it's very stable since the 5x5 will be held in place by the large grid blocks.

Some advice for making a tiny forklift in SE. Make it small, it is more usable when small, and with a simple design, it will still carry enough weight. All 4 wheels should be for steering, it really helps the turn radius and makes it usable in tight areas. Slap a mag plate on the back, you can use that to back up into a cargo container or a heavy block and use that for counterweight when carrying something heavy on the front, so you won't tip over. Set a speed limiter, they are light little vehicles and can get surprisingly fast with very little ability to steer. One small battery is more than enough, and it should be placed on the very back. Also, if you want, put a mag plate on the bottom, so if you want to put something up high, you can lock while raising it.

I'm hoping the 2x2 wheels will help me build something smaller than I've managed before but still useful. Completely agree that smaller is better with this sort of thing :)

idea for a pallet for you, Build a small grid landing gear, add 1 small armor to the top of that, on top of the armor block, ad armor plate and make it into a pallet shape, i would suggest a 7x10. Add an armor block to the corners under the plate, then add a small mag plate in each corner, so armor plate goes around the edge and the inside corner has a mag lock. Then add armor plate and mag plates to make the top of the pallet a complete flat surface. The 4 armor blocks will give it a pallet look, and would allow forks to go under the pallet, and it would let it rest on the floor in a stable way. Forks for the forklift should be made out of mag plates so they will slide between the floor and the bottom of the pallet. Edit, so i was thinking of how to control the mag plates, as you wont really be able to see them when things are on top of them, i was thinking of the 4 button panel. attach on to each side so you could have 8 mag plates on each pallet. I think you can build all of those blocks on this game mode. Having an area out the front of the warehouse where you can drop things off for the forklift would be helpful, as i think the forklift should use the 1x1 small grid wheels. so it will bottom out on any kind of ramp.
@warriorsabe17928 ай бұрын
I'd do the palettes the way they're done in real life - they're like that for a reason, after all. Have some small half block beams with gaps, then a platform on top, maybe with magplates to act as tie-downs. The forklift, then, can be a literal forklift with half block or plate tines to grab between the lower beams, the same way real forklifts grab real palettes

It's probably not a bad place to start, though I won't be surprised if the game decides that it doesn't like all those objects interacting that way :P

Cool series so far! But after seeing how useful the rover crane has been I can't help but wonder how helpful a fully piped base crane would be... maybe using hinges on either side of a conveyor junction with a camera centered on it to fold out a connector or a mag-plate for multi-role use... might even add a welder or grinder for base construction... if nothing else it would be a truly universal docking point for top side rover connectors or a cargo stacker to move containers around the base...
@Splitsie8 ай бұрын
I feel like a fully piped crane has a few limitations that might make it a pain - the main one being the lack of a 3x3 piston. Since pistons can't carry most components it would mean that the crane would have fixed length booms and so not be able to reach as far :/
@Bonghitterd8 ай бұрын
@@Splitsie Fair point, I guess fully piped wouldn't work, except as a docking rig for hydrogen or power... Not using landing gear for anchoring makes sense, for the engineering challenge. Have you considered deployable outriggers? No landing gear on the end, instead maybe like a 1x1 wheel, placed side-down (max friction? Or zero? Not sure which would work better)? Basically, thinking exactly like the deployable "feet" that cranes and backhoes and such have (for the same purpose), just an "arm" at each corner that pivots down to the ground. Those don't lock down IRL either (usually), they just provide a wider "foot" to avoid lateral tilting.

if you have a frontward connector then the problem will be that you'll have to reverse when leaving best IMO is to have it on the side

Idea: A radar that enables those ’blips’ but is *really* powerhungry (and maybe expensive and/or rare) so you have the option to search with assistance but make it prohibitively expensive to do so for long periods of time. Maybe balance it so the pings are much more frequent than they are as of right now. Idea 2: The ability to turn small grid blocks into their large grid variant at a very steep price. Haven’t seen many large grid thrusters and engines and such, it would make building large grid stuff possible in mid/late game if you haven’t already implemented a way to (and even if) allow people to build vehicles in large grid.
@Splitsie8 ай бұрын
Large grid stuff is implemented but must be sourced from space. My idea of the progression path is to scrounge together what you can on the planet, then go to space. While on the planet the threat level is very low, in space things get a bit more spicy but the loot also improves since you can get all sorts of blocks up there including refineries and assemblers :)

You can build a forklift type of vehicule to move things around
@Splitsie8 ай бұрын
I hope to do just that :)

@ Splitsie - You should make a scrapyard robodog that comes out to great you when you return and sits in a kennel recharging when you're gone.
@Splitsie8 ай бұрын
lol I wish I was clever enough to make something like that possible, the closest I can think of that would be within my reach would be a dog version of a cuckoo clock :D

You said about making a simple forklift for moving pallets of goods around - so, just to keep it 'simple' - how about a reach-truck with side shift? As you're in a warehouse, you'll need at least a four piston height on it, one piston for the 'reach' and another for side-shift, hinges and (maybe) another piston if you decide to make it tilt as well. This is more or less your definition of 'simple', isn't it? (I'd suggest a side-winder truck, but that might be tempting Klang too much.) Last thought - can you build a cage for your crane so you can take yourself up high, like SI with the Liftsie, so you can repair/grind/hack blocks that are elevated? I'm not sure if you hacked one of the wind turbines as the spotlight seems to keep focusing on it.
@Splitsie8 ай бұрын
I'll have to look into what you're referring to as I'm not 100% sure what side-shift might entail, but I hope to make something which can move around inside the warehouse so it'll have to be quite small. Even if I can't make a cage, I'm sure I could redesign the crane to be able to walk along the crane arm to at least reach relatively high places :)

At 29:11 the hinge part slowly catches up to the rest of the crane… did a double take when I first saw that lol

Considering how differently I play these games to a lot of people who make videos about em, I'd literally have all four of those wind turbines at different heights and I feel like people would go nutters about it.
@Splitsie5 ай бұрын
Honestly, I probably would have done the same, but perhaps it would have been to show how they all came from different places :P

Good video. You should try building a speed bike for looking for bigger bases with potential larg cargo for large grids. Or just make a room full of small grid small batteries floor to the top full mybe thoughts.

If I was playing on a local game I'd totally build a scout like that, unfortunately scouting ahead doesn't work as well with how the cleanup needed to be set up as all the scrap out there gets periodically removed and so would be gone by the time I got back :(
