The sequel to Disney's monster hit has arrived. A shame it leaves Doug ice cold. Doug takes another look at Frozen 2.
Watch the new NC here - • The Most INSANE Christ...
Frozen II, also known as Frozen 2, is a 2019 American 3D computer-animated musical fantasy film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios. The 58th animated film produced by the studio, it is the sequel to the 2013 film Frozen and features the return of directors Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee, producer Peter Del Vecho, songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, and composer Christophe Beck. Lee also returns as screenwriter, penning the screenplay from a story by her, Buck, Marc E. Smith, Anderson-Lopez, and Lopez, while Byron Howard executive-produced the film. Veteran voice cast Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Josh Gad, Jonathan Groff, and Ciarán Hinds return as their previous characters, and they are joined by newcomers Sterling K. Brown, Evan Rachel Wood, Alfred Molina, Martha Plimpton, Jason Ritter, Rachel Matthews, and Jeremy Sisto.

Me personally, I say fine to goodish, and a 6/10 rating as of now. While there are issues such as a lot of stuff in this film whereas the first one was mostly straightforward, there are key developments (e.g. Anna and Elsa) and bright spots such as the songs in general for me that I say justify the film's existence. I say it's the execution that needed to be better.

Disneycember 2019 blog day 11th brings us the sequel to the runaway hit "frozen" with "frozen 2" I gotta tell ya when I saw the 1st one I enjoy & when I say "frozen 2" it felt like I saw 'frozen" all over again from Olaf's point of view & hearing the new songs it got it to the "let it go" to "into the unknown"/"show yourself" or "lost in the woods" & I enjoy those too & of course when I left I still hear people sing "let it go" in their heads I would say go see "frozen 2" but let's face it you already have if not what you waiting for ? me I just say this "Christ I was frozen today" & ask people "do you wanna build a snowman ?" see what I did there

The moment they started out started saying Air, water, Earth and fire, I nearly shouted "I knew it! I bet this is going to be an Avatar: the Last Airbender/Frozen movie!" In a way, it sort of is... Four elements; groups are enemies; heroes have to save their people (or in Aang's case, the world); a hero nearly dies to save everyone; a new element is found/created. See the similarities between them?

the animation is definitely a huge step up for sure, there are a ton of little details that can easily be missed in this, For example, it's really faint, but if you look closely, Elsa does form herself a pair of ice sandals to wear, it's even implied in the sound design during the show yourself song.

What really gets me are the cool little expressions they gave everyone, in every scene. Every little twitch, grimace, and smile brought these characters more fully to life than ever before. I mean, watch Elsa's face from 4:18 to 4:21. I'm no expert, but I've never before seen a 3D animated film where a character so believably expressed "Alright, yeah good point, buuuuut-" without uttering a word.

2 things: 1) When they sang the songs, it felt like they were give performances, rather than just naturally expressing their emotions through them. In the first when they sang, they were still doing normal everyday, if exaggerated, movements. You could see them doing what they were doing if they weren't actually singing. Here, they're posing and gesticulating like they're on Broadway. 2) I actually found the main guard character who's been stuck in that place kind of interesting. He seemed the most human out of all of them: tired, but determined, and still loyal. I'm also glad they didn't try to make him a secret bad guy like Hans, he was just, "oh, the king's dead and _you're_ the queen now? Got it. I'm at your command, then."

The pure definition of a mixed bag. The good is with Elsa and her discovering more about herself, the mysteries of the past, and her destiny. The bad stuff is the fact that there are so many potential ideas yet nothing is done with those ideas. For instance, "We might have to destroy Arendelle, our kingdom, the home we grew up in, to save others that don't deserve to suffer(The Northuldra tribe) and atone for the sins of the past." That is a very extreme idea that you think would go somewhere, but doesn't. Also, Olat and Kristoff really are not necessary. Olaf is ok in some parts, but annoying in others. Kristoff is just there.

Evelyn L. I’m just saying that both Anna and Elsa had equal focus in the first movie (which was mostly told from Anna’s point of view). But in ‘Frozen II’, because that movie wanted to focus on Elsa’s power origins, the writers had to do everything they can to make Anna’s involvement play a big part in the story.

(This comment contains SPOILERS for this film) Okay, so from all the reviews I've watched, I honestly believe no one is giving this film the credit it deserves. The first thing, while minor, being the animation, and how honestly breath taking it was. This is straight up one of the best films I've watched in terms of animation and visual creativity. The other, and more important thing none of the big review channels like Chris Stuckman, JeremyJahns, and now this channel mention, is how this film builds on Elsa and Anna's character development. Elsa in this film knows that she's incomplete or isn't truly happy, and wants to find answers. Anna, is still very dependent on Elsa, and won't let her go because of the isolation she felt for so many years. Both are still dealing with the issues that they had from the first film, but by the end, Elsa finds her place, a role that she is happy serving while still keeping her sister in her life. She finds the best of both worlds. Anna learns how to be truly independent, without her true love or her sister to be by her sister, and learning how to be this strong individual is why she is a much better fit for being queen over Elsa. I could get even deeper into all of this, but all of this is why I love this film, yet no one brings this up. Also, I missed the first few minuets of this film when watching it, and yet I followed what was going on story wise for the most part, so how come people who saw everything are having a hard time putting everything together. Even the part that "undoes" what was previously established I can understand when trying to look at things a little more than surface level, which honestly I feel like a lot of these early reviews are doing, mainly because Frozen has a bit of a negative bias going against it. Now, I am fully aware this film has problems, many of which a lot of these reviewers mentioned that I can agree with, but I also has yet to come across one that feels like they even wanted to give this film a chance. That if this film didn't blow their socks off form their first watch, that it would never been be seen as anything but alright, or meh, which to a degree I can understand due to how successful the previous film was, but at the same time, I feel like a lot of the negativity people have towards this film comes from the expectations people created for it. Could many things could have been improved in this film, absolutely, but I also believe this film for most, was never going to truly please or satisfy some people.

Finally, someone who gets it. Very well said Lincoln. I would also like to add that unlike other Disney sequels, people were BEGGING and DEMANDING for this film to happen. The directors made it clear that they felt the first movie was enough, and that they were done with it, but then fans wouldn't stop blowing up their social media asking for a Frozen 2. So they made anther one. And now people are acting hella ungrateful. Sure, Frozen 2 has flaws, but these directors never intended for this to be a franchise in the first place, which means they have to start pulling stuff out of the air to make a new story for these character that already had a proper ending in the first movie. So of course they're going to have trouble creating the same magic that they did in the first one, but people can't seem to understand that. I mean, it'd be different if this was a movie that no one wanted or asked for like Cars 2 & 3, Toy Story 4, or Alice in Wonderland: Through the looking glass. Those movies are fair game to be torn apart by critics and fans. But Frozen 2? We WANTED that, and we should be grateful for what we got. Especially if you consider the fact that Disney could've just half-assed this movie and put any old crap in it because they know that the Frozen name alone would be enough to get butts in seats anyway. But they chose to work hard on this film and give us the best story they could come up with and people are bashing it. Smh.

Thank you! I liked Frozen 2 the first time, but I loved it the 2nd time. It's much better on rewatch, in my opinion. I sort of understand why it was so hard to follow for some people, myself included. It moves at a very fast pace, and a lot of details are gradually revealed as the movie goes on. However, everything is explained when you watch it carefully. While I completely agree with you, it's actually more than that. Anna's overprotective of her sister because of the events of the first movie. Remember, HER SISTER ALMOST DIED! Of course she's worried about Elsa's safety! Something a majority of reviews I've seen didn't talk about is the fantastic weight of the 3rd act. The 2nd half of this movie, in my opinion, is one of the best 2nd halves I've seen all year. The dam scene actually is important, people! The first half admittably has some problems, but they're overshadowed by how great Elsa and Anna are. If you want to watch some positive reviews on this movie, both Austin Burke and Black Nerd Comedy actually reviewed this movie with tact.

Lincoln Beckett-Scott oh, I think several of us are well aware of what the movie was trying to accomplish. But, the intent isn’t what matters, it’s the execution of these ideas, which in my opinion didn’t work well. Also, you have to understand that those reviewers you mentioned didn’t set out to make an in-depth analysis of the film. Those were 10 minute bite sized thoughts of the movie, so of course they’ll generalize their thoughts. I’m sure that if someone tried, they could break down every theme and plot point they didn’t enjoy of the movie. But, given time someone probably will. Maybe people like the Wisecrack channel could do it effectively. Anyway, I’m not going to debate on it because it’s too much to unpack, and we’d be here forever. But, I wouldn’t dismiss everyone’s opinion on the film because they _didn’t get it_ or something. I know you have good intentions, but it seems needlessly patronizing.

@Nick and @Sapphire... It's called "Alchemy". Most Western-oriented 'magic' is built off of Greco-Roman thought and mythology, particularly that of the four primordial aspects called the elements. To paraphrase Ovid, before anything else there existed the celestial AIR, the mortal EARTH, the chilling WATER, the ferocious FIRE. They live in violent opposition to each other, in PERFECT CHAOS, until the force known as NATURE separated them and in doing so established ORDER within the universe. The idea is literally called "Quintessence", or "The Fifth Element"...and in Aristotelian and Neoplatonic metaphysics it's the unifying force of the universe, often called "Spirit". ----- The Avatar is an embodiment of Quintessence, unifying the four elements that normally exist in conflict. Captain Planet's ring of "Heart" (which can control people's minds) most aptly warps the person's SOUL or Spirit to the wielder's whims...and is also the ring that enables the four other Planeteers to have their powers unite instead of conflict. WITCH, Winx Club, and Sailor Moon see this as a more light-oriented ability in opposition to the darkness/shadow-themed abilities of the villains. But the idea in each case is that the fifth member (and thus leader) acts as both the HEART of the team keeping them together with moral and emotional strength and as the QUINTESSENCE that is unique from the other team members but no less critical to what they can do and unlocks their full potential of working together.

Well.. Yeah, He's not telling you "HEY! you all must care about my opinion and think the exact same things I think!" He's simply giving his own thoughts and opinions. I never watch a review to tell me what to think, I like watching reviews to hear different thoughts, feelings, opinions and experiences that different people had with the film, I don't care if they agree with me or not, it's just fun to hear others thoughts, plus sometimes reviews bring up trivia about a film that I haven't heard before which can be interesting also. You go ahead and enjoy this film! More power to you! Personally I haven't seen it and never really plan to, thought the first one was a mediocre, generic, typical Disney film that has little to hold my interest, so likewise I have even less interest in the sequel.. I may watch it and the first one again, depends if my significanct other ever wants to watch it with me, she's a huge Disney fan and gets me to watch Disney films I haven't seen/re-watch Disney films that I haven't seen for years and wouldn't re-watch otherwise (which I thank her for because it has helped me rekindle old flames and remember how Much I loved them) and I'm the huge horror movie fan and show her loads of classic horror movies.. And Also Studio Ghibli films... Which are just amazing. 😍

I had a lot of issues with the first one... i LOVED this one. The music, while not as catchy as the first, is so much stronger. It’s has more of a Broadway feel and the lyrics are so powerful the more you listen to them. I tried to think about how many songs from the first movie that really connected with me, not just songs that are fun to belt every now and then. I could only think of let it go and the first time in forever reprise. In 2, i LOVED the lullaby, into the unknown is just as good as let it go, show yourself still makes me choke up every time i hear it in the car (and blows let it go away), and the next right thing is so POWERFUL!!! I consider the first one to be good but not great. 2 was outstanding. I saw it twice in theaters and enjoyed it even more the second time. And even now, weeks after seeing it, my brother and i are still texting each other about new things we are thinking of that make it so good!

Elsa didn't randomly guess that the ice statues were memories of the past. Earlier in the movie, Olaf stated that water contains memories. When the statues appeared, she asked Olaf again about the little fact about water and he explained in more detail. She didn't guess.
@lespena3722
@lespena3722 2 жыл бұрын
But there is one mayor problem with it. You see that fun fact is actually a quack science theory that was discovered in the 1900’s (the movie takes place in the 1840’s… basically the theory had not even been theorized yet). And if that’s not enough this quack theory has been disproven so many times it’s not even funny. (Basically all the experiments proved that water has no memory… and if it does a patient with end stage Alzheimer’s has better memory than water… even Dory the fish with her memory issues has better memory) And not only Disney used a science that has been disproven trying to pass it off as fact in a setting that it did not belonged (because it was not theorized yet) but seems they forgot their first movie where they showed just how easy it was to change memories (if the trolls were able to change memories like it was nothing you cannot expect me to believe that nothing changed the memories in the water, especially considering how easy and fast water changes, for all we know the spirits changed the memories (which I have to point out that in scandanavia (Norway) the spirits there are all evil and tricksters, so ya… Disney did not do their research) Even Disney itself said in the movie Pocahontas “You do not step into the same river twice” (I am quoting Pocahontas song “Just around the river bend” ) So ya….

It feels like the Frozen 2 cast went with their second idea in their brainstorming session instead of hashing it out to find a stronger story. If you're going to make a strong movie, you need bones that fit a movie format, not a TV show format. Euro-centric people taking advantage of/fearing other cultures is something that many kids' SHOWS are tackling these days (Steven Universe, Star Vs., She-ra, etc.). This is an ambitious kids' show plot, not a kid's MOVIE plot--especially not one for a franchise with a character development-driven start. It just feels so out of place. This concept they went with belongs in a long-running conversation where we can see how the ramifications affect everything (like on a TV show). Having it be the plot in a movie suggests that this problem is something that can be wrapped up with one growing experience. If we look at the history of the world, that isn't remotely the case. In the first one, all Elsa and Anna have to do is open up to each other--purely character development which is much more suited for a one-time growing experience and doesn't have the heavy weight and myriad connotations as what they're trying to pull off in the second movie.

I figured it out! I figured out how to fix the problems in Frozen 2! One of my biggest problems was with Elsa not getting enough time to fully flesh out her motivations and, therefore, her triumphant discovery. So, here's how you fix it. Kristoff proposes to Anna (in a preferably silent scene) near the very beginning of the film. Elsa is obviously happy for her sister, but without needing to be there for her all the time she begins to feel alone again. Where does she belong, who is she without the people around her, etc. Whatever message they want. The voice comes then, a symptom of her own disquiet and so not as out of the blue at the beginning and also foreshadows her place in the forest later. When she does decide to go, she insists on going along with some kind of talk with Anna with the overall message of "I can't do what I have to with you tagging along." Something that conveys that big personal growth mostly comes from within, not from others. Probably have the engagement brought up and Elsa saying she should stay with Kristoff . . . where she really belongs. With him, in Arendelle. That sets up the ending. Elsa doesn't take Sven, but instead creates an ice sleigh to take her with a fully-functioning reindeer of her own (who probably earns an admiring eye from Sven for a second for comedy, but whatever), because she made Marshmallow so you know she can do it. And she says her power's been growing, so there. Anna, however, doesn't let her go without a fight. She and Kristoff go after her and follow her into the fog, where they fight about trust and acceptance. "I'm different, Anna, I need to find out why, why I'm like this!" "Why can't you do that with me?" "Because this isn't about you!" Elsa and Anna meet the forest tribe and the guards, all the spirits (they have time for the giants too). There is also time to explain why ice actually works against all the elements. Cold freezes everything. Animals hibernate or die, earth becomes permafrost and can't move, fire cools, and water stops rushing. It's the perfect ability to calm them all down and balance out the elements. Maybe about winter being a time where balance is made and the earth reset, preventing everything from growing out of control, something like that. The elements are all stopped by cold. The water holds memory can be added too, since it's important, but they could also give the others some kind of credit, or foreshadow their own significance. Elsa leaves without them in the middle of the night, slipping out unseen. Anna and Kristoff stay with the tribe, learning more about the forest and about Ahtohallan that Elsa will learn without the need of exposition, but the audience will need a little help. I don't know if Elsa should find her parent's ship, it seemed sort of out of place in this one as just a reason for Elsa to cry and send Anna away, so we're skipping it. She travels to the north sea and does her run thing, same song and dance, but we have time now insce Anna's in Arendelle to have a moment of understanding from her (out of the song form) where we can see how much finding her place means to her. Maybe more on what this place she's found really is. Why does Elsa freeze with the memory? Some people say because Anna needed something to do, but I think it's actually because all of the spirits are still a little off with the dam. The Ahtohallan has frozen its own heart in order to keep further harm from coming to it. A call back to the first film that, if done well, would be appreciated. Elsa can not only feel how cold it is in the Ahtohallan, but she can feel magic there that is not flowing the way it should through the ice. So Elsa stays with the Ahtohallan like a friend, the one who can't be frozen with her deepest, darkest memories, works at untangling the web of hurt within the ice. And the only way to do that is to become one with it, ice herself. It starts slow, her fingers, arms feet. Only when she does discover that the reason the Ahtohallan feels dead---the betrayal from her own grandfather---does Elsa know what needs to be done. But she's frozen still, unable to move. Finally, the ice reached her heart . . . Just like before, she sends out a message to Anna. Anna breaks down in the camp, and no amount of talking can pull her out of her grief. Until the guard speaks to her, telling her the same adage she's been told throughout the film. Cut to the The Next Right Thing, having her emerge successfully from her depression. (I really like the song, I had to keep it) and the same ending except a moment with the sisters. None of this bridge nonsense, but acknowledgement of what happened. "Anna, I did need you," Elsa explained softly, a sad but wise smile on her lips. "You were right that I needed you there. But I needed you there, in the village, and not with me. You can be there for me even if we're apart, you were there for me." "But I couldn't be with you." "No," Elsa shook her head. "No. I do have powers you don't, Anna, and that will never change. I couldn't bring you with me over every icy wave, the glacier, or to every spirit I had to tame. This was my journey, and I learned so much... but I did it on my own. It was my role to do this, not yours." She grinned. "And your role, Anna . . . you'll be better at it than I ever was." Cut to Anna as queen. I really needed more time with Elsa developing into her bridge-ness and I think this would fix that, at least. Or, you know, we could do this whole movie the exact same except have Kristoff propose to Anna at the beginning and cut out his entire subplot. And his song. That would have been great too. (I got less enthused as I went along, but I really do think you're right about the need to cut down on some subplots and I do think my explanations work. It just needs a polish.)

I hate to be a ruiner, but your idea doesn't seems to click. 1. Anna's lesson in the movie was to learn how to become independant. It was built up with how much Elsa wanted to go alone because it was too dangerous for Anna, yet Anna insisted on going too because she can't lose her sister and has to be close to her. Anna's development comes from Elsa always pushing her away from harm (like with the fire spirit's attack and coming with her to the dark sea). Anna was forced away from her because Elsa thought the dark sea was too dangerous for her. Anna was angry that Elsa didn't need her because she promised they'll do it together, but when she gets the massage from her and understands that she died (because of Olaf's death) she felt grief. It was the memorization of Mattias's words "when life throws you in a new path, take a step and another step and just do the next right thing" that encouraged Anna to continue despite the harsh loss. If Mattias told it to her immidiately before the song without the build-up from earlier in the movie, it would've been much less impactful, especially considering that in the movie Anna was alone during that scene whereas here she has Kristoff, which makes her situation and the stakes much less harsh. Also, in your version Elsa leaves during the night and Anna stays with Kristoff in the tribe's village, which feels out of place for Anna because EVEN IN YOUR VERSION she chased Elsa to the forest to not leave her alone. If Elsa left during the night, Anna would've chased her. Also, if Olaf didn't come with Anna and Kristoff to the forest than how will they know that Elsa died? In the movie, Anna only learned that because Olaf was fading. 2. The ship scene was necessary to flesh out their parents's backstory more. They learned why they died, they learned what is Elsa's magic source and why she has them. If the ship scene was cut and Anna didn't come with Elsa because she left during the night than how will Elsa know all of that? It's integral to her development and self-understanding. She wouldn't have been able to understand that her powers were a gift for her mother for saving her enemy without Anna. 3. The bridge thing was important as well. Anna became the queen because she is the human side of the bridge, while Elsa is the spirit side of the bridge and that's why she stayed with the other spirits. The 5th spirit is, as said by Honeymaren "a bridge between us and the magic of nature" (AKA a bridge between humans and spirits). In your version, there's not enough justification for Anna to become a queen. 4. It sounds as if in your version Kristoff is even less relevant than he is in the movie. Sure, his arc was meh, but it's better than how he was nothing but a delivery guy in the first movie or in your version where he is still just the delivery guy.

I think it's just the standard Disney has up for itself. As a Disney movie this is fine not great or anything like that. The writing had a lot of mistakes and fumbles that are easy to see and fix for such a big studio it's inexcusable. The only reason the other characters were in it was to sell toys which is not a good reason to have them in the movie. I think the movie is fine it's defintly not excellent or terrible its pretty average.

Movie 2: Swapping between Anna and Kristof's perspective as they act as mediators between the old guards and the tribe people who are constantly at war.

SPOILERS: I think that this movie may have the most egregious example of a fake death in recent Disney films. There were a lot of young kids laughing at Olaf in the theater, and when he "died", and when Elsa "died" they didn't even react. No crying, no gasps, even they knew it wouldn't last. I agree with some of the critiques here, and want to add that the biggest strike for me was that nothing felt permanent. Characters don't stay dead, the city magically escapes being destroyed, the status quo is God. By playing safe, it cheapens the peril the characters go through, and everyone has caught on.

Yeah 2019 wasn't a great year for Disney. I loved both Avengers: Endgame and Frozen 2 but the rest just ranged from decent to bad. As for 20th Century Fox movies, I'll give the exception to Ford Vs Ferrari since that movie was a masterpiece, and Ad Astra is pretty good (but not the masterpiece that critics are calling it tho). We've also gotten the masterpiece that was Alita but I don't view it as a Disney movie because it came out when Disney has yet to unleash their deal with Fox.

I think this movie would've been better if they focused more on how each sister can learn to be independent without the other. Like Elsa trying to find out where her powers come from and what to do with them? Whilst Anna is trying to figure herself out how to step back from Elsa, though struggling since she doesn't want to break the bond they've just rebuilt, whilst Christoff tries to be supportive, but also figure out his own destiny, if he'll be a good husband or if Anna deserves better? I feel this would've really been something people can relate with since from my personal experience and probably others out there, families tend to grow apart (like moving somewhere far away to work on their dream life) or how people who were very close for a long time just slowly learn to grow apart over time, but still have some contact with one another from a distance and always be supportive.

Everything with Elsa in this movie was done beautifully, but she's a great character so its hard to do wrong by her. Her songs were great and I find myself singing them religiously since seeing the movie, and Anna's song 'The Next Right Thing' was also very beautiful, it was dark, but it gave a very real look into the feeling of grief. Is she even a waterbender? Because she rarely waterbends. Not to mention that you figured waterbending would be extremely useful in the ocean crossing scene. The elements system honestly muck things up with the simple group when they should have added more such as ice, lightning, light and dark (the last two would connect with tangled with their sun and moon powers). That would make things simpler. Instead if you have kids and they watch this, good luck answering their question of what element elsa really is. Then the spirits. Are the ones in the forest the same with those that shooed the Arendellians? Cus it seems to be different spirit groups.
