Frozen shoulder, clinically known as adhesive capsulitis, is a condition characterized by stiffness, pain, and limited range of motion in the shoulder joint. The exact cause of frozen shoulder is not fully understood, but it is believed to involve inflammation and thickening of the capsule surrounding the shoulder joint, leading to the formation of adhesions or scar tissue. Risk factors for developing frozen shoulder include age (most commonly affects individuals between 40 and 60 years old), gender (more common in women), certain medical conditions (such as diabetes or thyroid disorders), shoulder injury or surgery, and prolonged immobility.
Treatment for frozen shoulder aims to relieve pain and improve range of motion. This often includes a combination of chiropractic care, physical therapy, stretching exercises, and sometimes, manipulation of the shoulder under anesthesia to break up adhesions. In severe cases that do not respond to conservative treatments, surgery may be considered to release the tightened capsule and improve shoulder mobility. Early diagnosis and appropriate intervention can help minimize the impact of frozen shoulder and improve outcomes.
